View Full Version : Triumph Street Triple/Speed Triple modifying and farkling

Enlightened persons who own these bikes know that they are nearly perfect from out of the factory, so only minor tweaking needs to be done.

But we all personalise (aka) modify our bikes, right? So show us what ya got.

Also, heads ups on any good deals or where you got stuff or got stuff done would be good too.

I've only just bought my ST -R and it had a bunch of stuff on it out of the Triumph accessory catalogue (some of which frankly I wouldnt have bothered with like anodised brake reservoirs) but including a rear hugger. It does have R & G crash bungs and the pixie hat/flyscreen. Ive bought a fenda extender as well. front guards on modern bikes are too short.

What it didnt have and needs is a radiator guard, which I havent decided yet: QDF (quick and dirty fix) is some of that stainless mesh I have lying around. But I might get one of those Beowulf ones off ebay.

Ive got some CRG levers coming (WTF Triumph, no adjustable reach clutch lever on a bike that retails for $18k??)

Oh, and soon I will have an Ohlins shock, and the forks back from CKT from being farkled. :woohoo:

I will take some pix when its on the road again.

That'll rock!

CKT did my Speed Triple front and rear, though only re-valved the rear. Still good though!

While suspension is a recommended mod IMO, blinging bikes is a sickness. I need to seek Blingers Anonymous.

Two of the most cost effective spends you can have on your bike, far more so than any shiny bits you can buy.
I have a Speed Four so (surprise, surprise) there is no Ohlins shock for it but Robert was happy to modify and set up a Penske 3 way adjustable shock that I had bought from Shaun Harris and then Raceteched the front end. Man what a difference, like having a new bike. Added more to the enjoyment of the bike than anything else I could have done.

I couldn't find a radiator guard to fit so ended up making one. I used Turbo charger intercooler mesh cut to size. Fits nicely into top and bottom lips of the radiator (see pic) and cost me about $15. Now at 82,000kms the mesh is due for replacement owing to the number of stone dents in it but the radiator core is pristine.

anyone got any good ideas on an aftermarket exhaust for a 2009 Spd Triple? LIke the look of the low slung CRM silencer but the Zorst Mid slung exhaust sounds great and is Kiwi made so right up there. Any ideas appreciated.

I've got the CRM high mount, but if you like low, the kiwi one would be a patriotic option:laugh:

CRM look great - is it 3 into 2 or 3 into 1? -what does it sound like? Did you have any tuning dramas , new filter required etc etc

Owl

Mine is 3-2 and the sound and look IMO is the best.:D They were after all designed and built specifically for the 1050. They're not silly loud, but you can get them with removable DB killers if you like. Tuning was never a major issue and even less now with the introduction of TuneEcu (free).

I'm not a fan of the CRM 3-1 and prefer other low mount options.

The exhaust question is an interesting one. My ST-R has TOR cans on it, which sound and go pretty well: but apparently I can save 7kg of weight high up and at the back of the bike by using a low exit exhaust. But I am not that fond of riding loud bikes any more.

Owl
17th October 2011, 08:00
Yeah, major weight saving. Mine is 5kg lighter than stock, which makes quite a difference, especially with suspension, but we won't go there with more suspension talk:facepalm:

For extensive info on Triple mods and other shit (it is a forum!!) try this site

http://www.thespeedtriple.com/Forums

Heaps of really good info.

Even for genuine Triumph parts ebay has got to be better than buying in NZ with the ridiculous prices here. With the current exchange rate it is really hard to go past some of the US and UK triumph shops. Quicker service too!

Put a Barracuda screen on mine - just to be different, have a Cox Racing Products rad guard from the USA, Acerbis dual sport guards (because I don't have heated grips for winter riding) and Osram Nightbreaker bulbs. Oh, and a Triumph hugger which has started to crack in less than 2 years of use. Also have an Escort radar detector and screamer which I swapped over from my Blackbird.

Have covered nearly 20000 km on the standard shock and will be converting to a Penske (as per Trumpy) in the near(ish) future. Had one on my 'bird and it was outstanding. Have recently fitted PR3 tyres.

Heaps of pictures of the farkles on my blog if you're interested. Just type Street Triple in the search bar. http://geoffjames.blogspot.com/

Well CRM do them for the Street Triple in low or high mount.

http://www.chainreactionmoto.com/products/Triumph-Street-Triple-Dual-High-Mount.html

Not cheap though and more than I paid. On the plus side, all parts can be purchased directly from the manufacturer.........and I mean any part! That could be rivets, packing kit, baffle, skin etc and Bob (manufacturer) is excellent to deal with.

PS: Bob Floyd who makes / owns / runs CRM is a good guy. His option isn't the cheapest around, but I think the best looking. You can't beat black mufflers and midpipe on a black naked machine.

To fit the ventura pack rack with CRM mufflers fitted can be done, but takes a royal amount of FARKLING to get it installed.

I had to buy extra long bolts and use a double nut system as a sort of angle adjuster to fine tune the position of the l-brackets to make the rack fit and keep it square.

In the end it works well, is solid and hasn't worked loose on me.

Hi Dave,

I had a look at Al's awesome ride in Palmy a wee while ago and he advised me to talk to Bob about the Oxy sensor as he had a bit of mare getting it to fit into the port in his CRM exhaust. Funnily enough the US models seem to have a larger port.

I have been speaking with Bob about the sensor but I am a little confused. Bob said he can make an adapter but asked about the thread size saying that the US were 22mm and Aus/ NZ often 18mm. Of course when I checked the thread but its way smaller than that, while the nut is 17mm. Al said you seemed to jag it as your bike seemed rather unique but can I ask did you speak with Bob about this?

G'day Stefan, you might be alright.

What year is your bike? Have a close look at the O2 pickup. Mine is in the header - so bob just sent me a midpipe without any O2 pickup and she was just a plug and play business.

If you have an older triple - check if the O2 is in the midpipe. I don't know if the factory midpipe work with the CRM dual highmounts (I recall Bob saying you need to buy his midpipe for it all to work).

If your bike is a keeper - I think it is worth it. My mate has a 800 tiger with the arrow and my bike just drowns his out completely :-) I just love it with a farkle does that.

Wow - you guys are going to get me in trouble with the wife. All these ideas for farkling are not going to be cheap!
My bike is 2009 model but the sensor is in the mid-pipe. Bob also pointed out that for some reason the Aus / NZ bikes seemed to get the older exhausts, which also had a sensor in the mid pipe. I've sent Bob a photo and he seems to think it is not too much of a drama, just have the get the thread size right. On one of the photos he sent me I can see the sensor in the mid-pipe - same position as mine so it is not unique, seems simple enough.

I need the mid pipe anyway because it looks so good I am going to get one! My 1050 is a keeper alright although when I can afford it I might get a Ducati 1199 Panigale or perhaps a Confederate Hell Cat or Fighter. I'll decide when I strike oil in the back yard.

Thanks for the pointers - I'm going to have a quick chat with the lads at Street and Sport in town then order away and rely on the force that it will all work. The better I get on that 1050, the more I want to hear the engine really roar. I'll post a photo when its all done.

Gents, today I have got the bike back with CRM pipes fitted. Look and sound awesome. Only problem is it now sounds so good to rev it out, cruise speed when not paying attention has increased well above legal limits! Photo to follow. Thanks for all the advice and pics. Got the sensor squared away no worries at all and it seems to have fit around the pack rack very well.

Has anyone tried a low boy exhaust on their Street Triple? 3 into one and a shorty muffler in the same position as the new 2013 model has?. Mine is a road bike and I am an old fart so I dont want it too loud. I know where there is one but I am not sure if I want it or not. Interested in stuff like whether you had to rempap or reflash your ecu, or get a Power commander etc. Advantages I am looking for are lighter weight and removing weight from behind where I sit.

I can't afford BST wheels so this will do.

What say you?

the Arrow loooks the better option. sounds like it is quieter than other options out there especially if the baffles are still in.
shame the 'Competition Werkes' CW went out of business, they had great reviews and cheaper.
actually i meant chainreactionmoto CRM not CW

If you get the R&G tail tidy, and talk nicely to Mr Cycleworks, you too can have this look;

http://bit.ly/1MjS7zF

This was the 1st Street Triple sold in the southern hemisphere (mine). Unfortunately it got written off despite mostly cosmetic damage, just needed new forks to be rideable again, but the cosmetic parts added up to more than the cost of a new bike!
