Yeah, I reakon if I showed my wife that video, she'd be worried sick every time I head out of my garage. It's true to the point that safe motorcycling is all about awareness and common sense, the video makes it look worse than it is though. I was just pissed that after all that, you didn't even get the courtesy of a burnout or wheelie!

True - but (I think) since this video is made by our equivalent of LTNZ/ACC it's more of an awareness tool.

As a SV1000 rider you are obviously not new to motorcycling and probably know everything on the vid so well that it's all subconcious for you... however newbies have much to learn from it.

A wheelie would have been great though - he could have wheelied off into the Sunset instead of parking it into his garage.

Where was the sudden smash and gruesome aftermath?
How are they going to scare people into riding slowly if they just show them what to look out for and stuff?
It's almost like they're trying to educate riders or something... :weird:

Neat vid ;)

Sounds like a good idea - several forums would be quite grateful for the effort... perhaps for a reasonable fee or free depending on how charitable you are feeling.

good vid, but they guy on the bike should have stopped and given shit to the van driver who turned without a signal and to the tractor driver who pulled out infront of oncoming traffic ( the bike ). Stupid fucking people. Its a shame that it takes a fatality (sp?) or a cop to see these stupid actions to get a response from bad drivers, infact even if they get a ticket they refuse to believe that they are in the wrong. Who saw NZ worst driver? the last two drivers left, the one who was second to last still belived that she was a good driver. How can you get them to believe that they are stupid? I mean she was on a fucken tv program on how bad she was and still didn't belive it, I guess there is no getting through to some people!

I personally know what the "I'm about to turn right" syndrome is all about.

Many years ago I overtook a car in the gorge between Paeroa and Waihi. This silly dingbat driving the car, suddenly decided to turn right as I was alongside her. No indicators - NOTHING...!!!

Well, she pulled me around with her and my bike folded over and I went under the car. Luckily she slammed on the brakes JUST at the right instant, as I went under the back wheel. It must have lifted the weight off the back axle as I went under it. I was in quite some pain and had a tyre print across my yellow raincoat, right across my rib cage but I was still alive... No thanks to that brainless b*tch. She never had any warning across her cars rear end...!!! She said "I saw you overtaking me but I didn't know what to do".. I Replied - "Try NOT turning next f****n time"...

God, I don't know...!!! Ya give some people a brain and they become dangerous...!!!

The worst part about the whole ordeal was my bike was absolutely knackered... As soon as I was able to, I bought another bike and away I went again...

I could show you such a thing. I fell off... didn't quite make it off actually - more under really... the other day. I was only wearing jeans as I didn't think to be out long.
So my jeans were wripped like paper as was the skin on the inside of my knee. My boot also showed signs of scuffing on the inside so my leg must've been hella twisted under the bike. Not that I noticed.
It's still very tender and swollen. I got off quite lightly. On the plus side, my mangled leg prevented too much damage to the bike. Didn;t even score the tank.

The video shows you to "THINK". We are all human and you can't say that you've never cut somebody off. Shit happens.
When I ride I always think that every car is out to get me, every corner there might be a truck parked across the road, a cow shit, oil etc (note: i don't think that I'm going to stop when I come around the corner, but at least I'm ready).
If you have no body in front of you the the odds are on your side.
This is just my opinion which to me is the only one.

from what I recall he said he dosn't believe in it as consious action, rather that it just happens, and for an experienced rider that seems true to me

I dont recall the exact words, but all I do remember is that he was less than emphatic about it - to the extent that the judges "respectfully" disagreed with him. I still remember thinking "good on ya mates- that takes balls"

I am pretty sure he was introduced as a world champ? whatever - certainly a pro rider. (perhaps thats why?)

Until the Kiwi world champ says he does not believe in counter steering...

Perhaps lets consider two separate things, counter balancing and counter steering.

Counter steering is what you do in an emergency to avoid something. It is a short term course correction.

Counter balancing being what you do when riding around a corner at any speed faster than 30 km/h, so you can lean into it.

I think Aaron's comments were more to do with counter balancing, as in what he does on the track all day. And he would be doing it automatically. He would not be thinking about doing it deliberately. He's been doing it for so long, he probably can't remember what it was like trying to learn.

Sure I accept that he was probably not thinking in technical terms or terminology (and who am I to correct a pro rider!), but lets be clear here- there is no such thing as "counter balancing". The ONLY REAL steering you get on a bike comes from counter steering. Using body weight to steer results in NO effective steering at all. People who think they use body weight to steer are misguided. They are actually using counter steering and don't know it.

See this article by Keith code at the California Superbike School: http://www.superbikeschool.com/machinery/no-bs-machine.php

Perhaps in the act of moving body weight to the inside, they are unsuspectingly pushing outwardly on the inside bar, and causing countersteering, but they are only going around corners because of it. Counter steering is not just for emergency situations- it is for controlled riding in general. When it is the only way that you ride, with conscious counter steeering, then it will be the only way that you react in emergency situations. Better to ingrain it sooner rather than later.

How can you ride a bike with no hands then.Body weight can and does affect the course of even large motorcycles.(and no hands on the handebars)
BTW i reckon countersteering is the way two wheels vehicles turn,so no arguments there

R-Soul
2nd February 2010, 14:06
Yes you are right it does have a little effect- That's why my wording was "real steering" and "no effective steering".
You do get some steer out of body weight, but this type of steering is only effective to move the bike around really wide corners, and is less effective the faster you go, since the gyroscopic stabilising force of the spinning wheels is stronger and tends to keep the bike upright.

I have never ever seen anybody take anything close to a real corner (for eg radius less than 100m) with no hands unless they had turned in already and then let go of the bars. Have you?
