Excuse my ignorance but for those who have bought and sold bikes and other vehicles - I'm aware that on most items the success fee works out as a percentage but what about bikes and cars? According to this page it looks as though I'd get clipped $29 to list my bike and $29 as a success fee - http://www.trademe.co.nz/help/18/fees-and-fee-calculator#motors ....Would $58 be the total costs incurred?

Also, I'm thinking of turning my classified listing into a $1 reserve auction so will I have to pay a new listing fee?

Chur in advance

Due to the increasing costs, trademe is my LAST place to list. I put it on sella first (free, but much less traffic than trademe) and advertise that listing in social media, perhaps here, etc. If it doesn't go in a week or two, then a trademe listing is in order.

But yes I think you have it right. Of course, if the listing is withdrawn 'unsuccessfully' it's only half that... :innocent:

if you email them you may be able to just get your classified changed to auction at no cost as they`ll make an extra $29 via auction i done it awhile ago but they have been getting more and more greedy so who no`s

It's constantly got more than 60 watchers, people often say they'd tear my arm off if they had the coin etc etc....well I'm thinking there's a pristine bike sitting in my garage waiting for someone prepared to put their money where their mouth is.

There's a lot of interest so I might just let the market decide :corn:

It's often the best way to do it for sure.

$1 reserves are crazy, you will get lots of interest from people that don't have the money to buy it. Its like real estate agents selling (or rather not) houses 'from $350k' when they really mean they promised the seller $430, the house is worth $395, and they say ' but 350k will stimulate more interest'.

Yeah it might, - but with buyers who have 350, maybe 360k. None of the 350k buyers can stretch to what the seller wants & the ones that can; think Gee I'm getting fleeced buying this 350k house for 400k.

You're doing the same marketing a bike like that.

Most people want to see a price & go yeah I could afford that, but what if I could talk them down a bit? Bargain!

Yeah maybe. I have said elsewhere that I will sell the bike at the asking price (no less) up until the date that I'm going to auction it, but I figure maybe a $1 reserve auction will motivate people to actually buy - because maybe if they don't make a move, someone else will.

. . . because maybe if they don't make a move, someone else will.

All down to price & finding the right buyer. I understand how frustrating it is trying to sell a bike in the middle of winter (June it says). Also trying to sell a modified bike. Buyers just look at the price of a new one on special & say, gee I could get a nice new one for not much more. I know that last statement doesn't help much but it probably close to the truth.

But the right buyer is probably out there & would be salivating over the suspension mods etc (lets hope he likes the UK flag). It just might take time. Good luck.

Yeah, but then you get $800 for a deregistered, half fucked GB400 on a one dollar reserve. If I had of advertised it at $500 probably wouldn't have sold.

aww I cry foul, different market surely. There is a total different mindset I would have thought (& at this stage I realise I'm arguing out of my league with a bike salesman), but a different mindset of buyer when you pass some $ value, lets say $5000 when it becomes a different style of purchase.

Fucking hit and miss though. My old man just sold a trailing sprayer for 3,300 after the first auction was won at 3k but fell through, the second auction was 2.5k no reserve and no bids, then got lucky third time round. Think it was about 200 bucks success fees though, which is a bit bloody obscene.

Nah. I recently sold my gorgeous 79 Elsinore. It wouldn't sell when I offered it starting at 6k. But finally I dropped the reserve right down just to get people bidding.

It then sold for $6220.00. I think most Kiwi's once the decide they want something and bid on it... they hate being outbid.

Add extra $50 to your selling price.

Problem solved.

The other problem you get, is you don't know if you have a guy willing to pay $1000 more than where the bidding stops.

It must take a special sort of fuckwit to be a business analyst for trademe. Go search for something in a price range, you'll see what I mean.

We put trade-ins worth up to about $6-7,000 on $1 reserve, works out well every time. Those that can only afford to spend $2k stop bidding at ....$2k, those who can only afford to spend $4k stop bidding at ....$4k. We've never had an issue with payment.

Auto 'auction-extension'. It happens (from memory - someone correct me if I'm wrong) if there are bids within the last two minutes of the auction (if the seller enables it), enabling a bidding war to begin.

They said:

"Because the sale methods of classifieds and auctions are so different, (and require varying sets of information) you are unable to relist a classified as an auction, or vice versa.

You are welcome to create a new listing for your item; however when you create the new listing the listing fee will be charged again. We are more than happy to refund the additional fee to your Trade Me account.

To enable us to do this, please confirm your new listing number with us and we will process this refund for you.

If you have further questions regarding this issue please reply and we will answer your email as soon as possible"

FWIW, I've decided that I'll create a new $1 Reserve auction to start November 1st (if the bike doesn't go before then), and I'll request that Trade Me credit my account - I suppose it's better than a kick up the arse
