I've always wanted to try some proper off-road biking but it's not as popular here and it's quite difficult to 'try out' the sport here without serious commitment, There aren't much in the way of clubs either.

Is there any such thing as maybe off-road adventure centres that could give me a taste of offroading or maybe training etc? It would be great to incorporate some kind of offroad experience into my trip if possible.

Not a training centre but great fun to play. Have a few old field bikes & loads of space to play. I have taken my girlfriend a couple of times to learn to ride & she loves it. Can be hard getting hold of anybody there though. Worth a look if your up north.

These guys are close to Auckland.. http://www.thesandpit.co.nz/

The guy that runs it, Tony is a very good rider and coach and the bike park they use has a huge variety of terrain that is learner friendly. Post this request in the off road section if you want a better response.

Yet another edit, forgot they had reorganised stuff, use this http://www.endlessdirtbiking.co.nz/ for training, not the sandpit site, same people but different companies, I think the sandpit site still shows Chris Birch for training but he's based in South Africa now.
