View Full Version : Weight saving where you need it the most

On or off-road, you are all looking to save weight, right? A few grams here and a few there, can make a wee difference in acceleration and handling.
How much money, time and effort have you put in to saving weight? How keen are you to save weight and balance the bike?
How would you like to save 3 - 4kg right where it counts, in one move..?
No, I'm not pushing Jenny Craig, although some may think that to be a good way, I'm talking about ditching your battery!
Shorai USA have the ultimate secret weapon, batteries that give far superior kick and longevity and weigh just 700g!
Check the threads, "Gobsmacked today" and "Shorai LFX Lithium batteries."

Some are under the 700g, and depending on application start at $179.00. Check www.shoraipower.com the US site, and enter either your bike details or the equivalent battery for the model to suit you. The most you'll pay here for a Shorai for your bike would be $249.00.

Bulls is a long way from here...:innocent:
You can have it delivered for $179.00 plus the usual $6.50 P&H...
Next shipment is due to leave the States on 25th so should be in stock about the 30th. We are having real difficulties with supply due to excessive demand and I'm spending all the money I have to try to get enough stock in to keep up or ahead.
The demand just from the US is meaning Shorai are constantly running out of stock despite having increased production!

$249.00 for a 14A as featured in "Gobsmacked.." I forgot, I was offering free delivery for KB'rs
They are relatively new, they've been selling in the US for a wee while. Shorai are on Facebook where you can see a few videos. I've been importing them since January. They claim up to four times the life and the batteries are safe and environmentally safe as well.

It's cheaper to save weight by never filling your tank more than half full. Average size tank = 16 litres. Half of that is 8 litres, or about 7kg of weight (even more weight saving for unleaded).

Bernie turned up on his '88 FXR with the Ultima big block 113ci, (1850cc?), high performance engine. 120hp and about 10.5/1 compression ratio. He's not certain, but it's a struggle to turn over and he's had to fit a 2+kw starter to it.
Even with a stone cold battery right out of the box, the 36A cranked that Harley into life in very short order! He was impressed and switched off. I said, "Now you've warmed the battery up a bit it will start faster now." :innocent:
Sure enough each subsequent attempt showed the battery giving an ever greater kick and even trying twice with the decompression lever off, that 36A kicked like a Clydesdale and started it right up! While the lead acid he had would have given up and died long ago, by the time he left, the Shorai gave it an instant start!
Downside? He had to put his old battery in his knapsack and carry it home... He complained about how heavy it was! :bye:

So if you lose 1kg of body weight there's no sense in losing roughly an additional 2-3kg?

Perzackery! Whatever you do to lose weight either from yourself or the bike, you can easily lose another 3-4kg by swapping the battery for a Shorai. People spend hundreds and often thousands of dollars to save grams. Spend a couple hundy and save kilo's! :weird:

I paid US$21 for my battery. It weighs 322g, is 4.4 Ah and will discharge at 90A for short periods of time or 65A continuously.
Can't charge it on the bike though. Has to be run total loss as it requires a special charger. Doesn't matter because I bought three of them.:woohoo:

Horses for courses and you get what you pay for. If they do what you want, goodonyer. The Baby Shorai is 7A/hr weighs 460g and cranks out 107CCA. Can be charged off the bike or any trickle charger and costs $169.00. Will far outlast your wee $21.00 battery though.
So add up how many of these you're likely to go through, add in the cost of the special charger and teh Shorai looks pretty good value...

It is a lithium polymer R/C battery. Massive supply out of Hong Kong keeps the prices at rock bottom. Special charger = US$12
Length of life? No idea. The cells do have a habit of swelling if they get wet for too long.
The other drawback is they like to catch fire/explode if you charge them wrong.
The baby Shorai does sound very good for the price. If I ever build anything more than a bucket I will keep Shorai in mind.

Yeah, that's the big difference in that the Shorai have to be manufactured for their intended use and be safe in all situations and covered by warranty. Who knows how far technolgy will progress in the near future, eh?

If it wasn't for the hours, I'd love to be one... I'm too old and tired though, and like it the way it is. Mrs. Bear works four days a week, (on call for Fridays), and we spend Fridays together, it's our "day off". Working my business from home, although I probably do at least the same hours as a car salesman, i.e. you're always "at work", I can go out or take a break whenever I like.
I can run the business from my iPhone, too, so it doesn't matter where I am.

the batteries are safe and environmentally safe as well.
I am not sure if any battery could claim to be environmentally safe as such - the mere production of such beasts is a toxic process. Of course, when they are made in India or China we dont get to see the environmental damage as they are produced and then recycled once they have lived their useful life.
A kick starter and a capacitor is far more environmentally friendly!

As long as the charger isn't delivering more than 14.6V, it's fine. The only other no-no is a desulphering charger, they give a very high boost charge. Trickle chargers have always been the best for most batteries and my 4A automatic is perfect.
They designed to be a drop-in replacement for your standard battery so no modifications to the vehicle charging system are necessary.

Finally got my bike back on Friday
Has been sitting at custom chambers for 3 weeks , with the new lithium battery she fired up first time , cranked up like she had been on a charger/conditioner , wouldn't have done that with a lead acid battery
Lead acid batteries needed full charge to even attempt to start my beast

I have now got 8 top riders using Shorai batteries in their race bikes, and they love them!
I was ordering monthly at the beginning, but I've had to order three times in the last month! Having to pay in advance, you can imagine what it's done to my bank account... Fortunately I have a great business manager who understands how it works!
Despite the need to re-order way before schedule, I was only a few days away from having the cash back to pay without using the OD. Sales have gone through the roof! Not that I'm complaining mind, but it's getting hard to keep enough of the popular models on hand fopr immediate delivery at this time of the year. In about a month I hope to have enough stock on hand to cover, although the way things are going with more dealers wanting to stock them, that could be a tall order. Two of my dealers have just cleaned me out of two models of battery! One ordered twice last Thursday!

That's interesting I'll check with Shorai as no mention is made of vehicle charging systems anywhere. As I said they are a straight replacement for your standard battery and are supposed to be compatible with the vehicle's charging system. Perhaps the fact that the electrics are being used while the battery is being recharged makes a difference? I'll let you know what they say.

don't worry getting back to me dude....tis all good. just not all bikes have voltage rectifiers/regulators....be careful....good luck with the business...product looks mint! you should mention the deep cycle abilities of the batteries for people who are after a battery they can drain over and over for other purposes...and the fact Li battery have no charge memory...and their life cycle is massive compare to lead acid and even gelcel, etc

Yeah the uses for them are almost endless but one thing must be catered for and that is they must not be drained flat or you can kill them. Shorai say don't go below 20% so any other use needs a monitor. These are Lithium Iron not Ion and won't catch fire like Lithium Ion can either.

Got it, Ben fixed the modem to run on a Shorai battery temporary until I can get another adapter tomorrow!
Shorai recommend the LFX14A1-BS12 so KB price is $220.00 with free postage. Lifecycle is about 4x a lead acid and they don't lose their charge. Without drain they'll hold their charge for about 12 mths. We haven't been able to flatten one by cranking, either, just ask Biggles!
I'll PM you, you can pay either by credit card over the phone or by direct credit into our account, or cash/cheque on pick up.

I've been running a Shorai battery on a total loss carb'ed track bike. It works great so far. After a typical 15 minute session, it re-charges in about 5-10 minutes with the Shorai charger.
The battery weights nothing and the current seems to stay around 13.2V while riding. What more can you ask for!? :niceone:

That's quick! I thought you'd need a car charger to boost it between races. To know the Shorai will do it is good news!

Yes, the bike doesn't have a fuel pump or injectors, so it's only the ignition unit and coils that draw some power.
I had no problem getting a full charge between sessions, about ~20 minutes in between. I probably could have run one charge all day.

Different story with an injected bike running total loss. After a 15-20 minute session it takes about 45 minutes to fully recharge.
I'm using an LFX14 at the moment but I want to replace it with an LFX18 because I don't always get to recharge it between sessions. The larger capacity gives me a decent margin so I won't run out of charge out on track.
I'm also after a faster charger cos they'll handle charging at 10A easily. Blast 10A at it for 10 minutes then use the Shorai charger to balance the cells and top it up. Total of 15 minutes charging for 20 minutes use.

Take out the alternator and carry the spare batteries, replace every few hours of riding, save a kilo or 2 haha

I sold a tiny 14A2, the 14A in a 7A case, to a racer for his GPZ1100 race bike, not realising, (neither of us thought to mention/ask. I assumed it had onboard charging, he assumed I knew it was total loss), it was total loss electrics.
He emailed me saying he didn't think the battery was up to it as it died during a race. Turns out he had done practice and first race and it died lap 3 on the second race. Once he charged it between races it was fine, but I've sent him an 18A as a replacement anyway to give him more leeway.
I was amazed the little 14A2 did a whole race as total loss, let alone practice, one race and 3 laps of the second!

I now have seven dealers signed up with Scooter World in Auckland signing yesterday, so with dealers so far in Whangaparaoa, Silverdale, Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo and Wellington I have to consider their interests and support them.
I will now be referring future enquiries to your local dealer. It would be unethical for me to offer a discounted price directly in competition to my dealers, so while KB has been a valuable start for me, I'm sure everyone will understand that I can no longer offer a discounted price through the website.
My purpose was to establish a dealer network throughout the country and withdraw from retail sales altogether once I had enough to do the job.
So please do support your local dealer as the batteries truly are unique and well worth the money which really isn't any more than you would be paying out anyway taking their life into acount.
Appreciating your support,

Had a great weekend there what with the V8's, m/cycle and Swap Meet on Saturday and street races Sunday. It was the most relaxed and pleasurable way to "do business". Staying at Miranda, dinners at Kaiuaua, lovely!
Had the pleasure of meeting more people and putting faces to names as well as catching up with others I know again.
It was great to meet Karl Morgan, a very nice young man who deserves all the support he can get. I was introduced by him to Gentleman Ray Clee and was impressed with his quiet self-effacing manner and down to earth natural way of speaking. Quick, quiet and professional we had a good chat about Suzuki's - I think I convinced him of the superiority of the Kizashi over its competition...
To top it off he is now a dealer for Shorai! He and Karl were very impressed with them and Ray will be running them in his race bikes.
I have a few more dealers lined up and will be signing them this week. Watch this space for some well known racing identities to be dealer in your area.
I am already referring customers to my dealers and am getting regular orders from my earlier dealers now.
Scooter World in Kelston is now a dealer so anyone over that way can pop in and check them out. Malcolm was Gobsmacked, that word comes up all the time with Shorai, at the huge weight difference and has reported his BMW GS is going great with its new 21A. He's dropped from 6kg to 1.6kg with more power!
Sean Donelly is rapt with the performance and reliability of his 18A1 and several others who have been using them said how good they were with no complaints or any issues!
My sales have jumped 300% over the last three months and this is only just starting!

If cold enough they can be a bit sluggish at first go but if the temp is very cold, turn the ignition and lights on for a minute or two while you finish getting your gear on. This will warm the battery up and give full kick. If below freezing you might need to allow five minutes, but even without waiting, the first try would have warmed it some and each start after that will get it warmer.
They work the opposite way to a lead acid which gives greatest kick first and then gets weaker with each start attempt. Never had one fail to start a bike or car or boat or helicopter yet.

R & R Powersports are now a dealer in Albany. If you know Lincoln and have work done by him for your bike Kart or Jetski, ask him what he thinks about the Shorai batteries!
I'd approached him some time ago and he declined but recently he was able to experience the Shorai difference personally with an 18A in a race jetski. To say he was blown away is about right, he rang me eating his words and said he wanted to sign up immediately!
He had a problematic race ski that frequently stranded the rider on the start line as the new, fully charged Yuasa would barely turn the crank enough to start and after one go called it quits requiring a boat to go out with a 30Kg starter pack. Why so hard to start? It just happens to be the former world champion's ski and has a very high performance motor with 56mm carbs and 95mm pistons! I think he mentioned something like 100km/h in 2.9sec...
The other issue was that the Yuasa was too heavy to mount up front and had to be mounted in the rear, requiring 3m of cabling, reducing its efficiency. The Shorai being smaller and so much lighter, could be mounted up front with minimal cable length to the starter.
So the owner comes along to try out this new fangled battery, without too much in the way of hope it would be a lot better... :innocent:
He called in the other day to pick up two more to take to the jetski championship this week and was absolutely fizzing! He claimed the motor was running before it had done a complete revolution! It wasn't a case of winding for a few turns, he emphasised it was literally instant starting! He hit the starter and it immediately burst into life, he nearly fell over! He took it down to the river for tuning and testing and he was shaking his head as the ski started instantly time and time again with no drop in performance of the battery... until it died. :shit: What went wrong?
He runs total loss electrics and didn't give the battery a boost charge all day... So he becomes the first person to flatten a Shorai battery by cranking an engine... He accepted it was his fault. :pinch:

Enjoyed meeting Karel Pavich and the team on Friday.
Hard to believe it was 1971 when I was last at Pukekohe race track! I stood in the pits and gazed up at the bleachers and remembered sitting there while watching Leo Leonard win the B&H 500 with his E49 Charger - remembered watching his front discs glowing red/orange all the way along the back straight from overheating brakes...
Anyway it was a very enjoyable day there and of course I was gutted at not being able to join the fun, but met a bunch of good people including a local PC on his Beemer being one of the instructors. Very impressed at how well those cop bikes get along, too! Some tasty machinery there, including Karel's MV!
They were blown away by the batteries! Couldn't get over the weight and size of them. Being able to name-drop, was great, and then to see Andrew Stroud in the next couple of bays over and have him pop over and chat was even better!
On the way back I called in to Drury Performance Centre and they are now a Shorai Battery dealer! So do pop in and see them! Having met the guys there in person,(and the lovely office lady!), I can see where they get their reputation from!
Also met coincidentally, Lez Herst. Now he's the guy restoring the legendary Phoenix Funny Car! Check him out on www.phoenixfunnycar.com when the site is fully up and running... Guess who is now keen to try out the Shorai batteries as starting packs for these drag racers?
Got four more dealers to visit this week and prospects for the future are getting brighter each week! Sales are booming now and I am still trying to get ahead of demand! Sold another 36A to a guy who called in with a hot-rod RevTech powered Harley and he was gobsmacked at the weight difference! Having four times the cranking power of his month-old Besco that could barely crank his engine over, was incredible.
Also sold a 36A to a very nice chap who happens to own a very unique and distinctive Honda NSX that has had mega-bucks spent on it for track work. He was also blown away by the weight and power of the Shorai battery as he has been stripping weight out of the Honda by means of expensive carbon fibre and special brake and engine bits...
Word is spreading rapidly now! It won't be too long before Shorai technology becomes industry standard I reckon!
Cheers, and have a great week ahead!

Just a quick update. I now have 30 dealers throughout the country and more contacting me every week.
Karel Pavich is returning to racing and has a Shorai battery to help with the weight saving. I wish her well and know she will be competitive.
Marcus Beagley and his young sidekick are doing well in the Winter series. Marcus likes the wet conditions and is still using his original Shorai battery which has survived a couple of crashes and a good thrashing.
I am using a 21A in my MX5 and it is over 10kg lighter than the car battery I took out! It looks like a joke in the boot it is so small, yet it fires up the 1800 twin cam effortlessly. In a small car like the MX5 it makes a difference. So far by removing the air-con pump, the spare wheel and swapping the battery, I've taken about 35kg out of the car. When you only have 130hp to play with that is a significant amount of weight!
Off roaders are appreciating both the very light weight and the extra margin of cranking power. Nothing worse than trying to bump- start a bike in the bush, especially those that don't have kick starters these days.
Racer's reckon you gain about the equivalent of 1hp per kilo saved and with your replacement Shorai saving between 3 - 5kg over your standard bike battery that is an advantage not to take lightly, (sorry, couldn't resist!). Coupled with that is the fact that the weight comes out of the very place you need to lose it - up high under the seat - which helps with mass centralisation and balance, and it is a no- brainer!
Better acceleration, better handling, more consistent electrical output, stronger and longer cranking power, two year warranty... No wonder my sales have jumped 40% over this last GST period and 300% since January!
Enjoy the Winter months, ride safe and remember life is not a rehearsal. Relax, don't stress and remember to laugh a lot.

10kg lighter for a car battery is pretty damn good! Going to suggest this to a mate who is getting pretty serious on weight shedding for a track bike.
First thing you should do I reckon. Read back and you'll find the bit I did on the 10. Best kg for $$$$ saving you can do.
Choppa, aren't you using one yet????

^^ Wot he sed! The racing scene is taking to them like the proverbial, both on and off road. I am expecting clubs like the MX5 Club will grab them for their track days, too.

I'll pass that info on to my boy who runs an Integra and is changing out the side and rear glass as we speak for weight reasons. He'll be into one of those batteries.

Hmmm... That's a thought. Probably do the grips but the heated underwear may be a bit much... <_<

Which battery would I need for the Bandit Ed? Im just thinking about making a bit more storage under the seat.
Will be awhile away but thinking what I would need to do it and how much space the battery change would save.

The 14A1 is recommended but the wee A2 might work as well as it has the same power. Sean Donnelly ran the little battery in his GPZ1100.

I would rather more power than smaller size. Cheers. Will look up the size and see if it works.
They are ok on there side?

Yup any position will do. The difference between the two sizes is reserve capacity. They have same power.

I have made up a dealer listing by area, so hope this helps. I have listed 42 dealers here, I have a few more who have signed for their own industry. Some of these guys you will know well, others may be a surprise.
If there is no-one in your area, you can order direct from me.
All the best for the coming racing season!
