View Full Version : F3 project wheel choice

I have an F3 project on the go. 91 Honda RS250 running a 550 Aprilia engine. I want to make it light and have a little dilemma with the wheels. I want to run RS125 wheels and rubber. Will they handle the job and is that the correct choice to get the power to the ground. I have seen plenty of project bikes like this running the wheels and tires but just wonder what people here think. The engine will be putting out good power when its finished.
Cheers Rich

My initial gutt feeling Rich....
125 Wheels and tyres will be a little thin for a 550 torque monster...
And being a 250 frame, it would be better suited to wheels closer to 4" and 5"?
Would be interested in what others say though :)

jason easton just won the championship on 125 Bridgy rubber. but the bike is designed to use that size wheels.
Would i run that size? no, but it clearly can be made to work and handles the job fine.
91 honda? is that a NF5??? can't wait to see it

Yeah I was thinking of jason Easton's bike. Its actually a 1990 NF5 keep getting that wrong. The one Steve had for sale a while back. The question also is if the 125 wheels were not such a good choice what would be? Needs to be Light and with good rubber available. And readily available.

Sounds good will get in touch. I have heard of people running the NF5 swing arm in old VFR750's and using CBR 600 wheels. Plenty of well priced forged options for them.

If ongoing costs are an issue then 125 rubber is pretty enticing.
Given where you got with your bucket, I wonder if big tyres are a smarter option.
Too many choices, good luck !

I think going with 250RS wheels is the wise choice.

yeah a bike like jasons is built to be a 125 size but a 250 sized bike running really thin 125 sized rims would look horrible for starters and would require massive spacers etc to fit do you have the rs250 rims??

Really you wanna contact Jason Easton and ask him if he has issues putting the power down to the ground (he also uses the RXV550 engine). Stevey B should have the contact number.
If the 125 size rubber works well enough, then it would make more sense to me to use it. Cheaper, and you can throw the used one's on your bucket when you done, or perhaps replace Steve as the supplier of tires to bucket racers.
Also the initial turn in i could imagine would be much quicker with a 125 sized tyres.

Jason's bike runs 125wheels with 250hubs in the rear to handle the power ,the 125 tyres can handle the power no prob ,but it does get twitchy with a small contact patch a full lean ,if its 250 size use 250rims and rubber ,but you have to run very small rear sprockets to get the top speed from a 550,jason sumtimes runs a 30 rear sprocket. Alot of work and development went into jason's tigcraft frame by a man that builds moto2 frames and has built frames for more than 30years ,if you have the cash i would recomend after market rims to get the hubs right and light weight.

gearing is very dependant on tyres, so with 125 tyres jason has to run shorter gearing (30 sounds a lot longer than i was told). On 250 tyres (165's) the SXV is geared around 38-41 depending on the track which is not too bad (unless you run the sxv arm, dooh). Can go to a 17 tooth front sprocket and get another 2 teeth onto it if you like but there can be some clearance issues if your using the swingarm mount on the motor.
you have a chassis there designed around given rim sizes, i would think long and hard before going too far away from it.

I would use 250 wheels in your 250 chassis, making 125 wheels fit would be hard and look stupid , why i went with 125 wheels was to try keep the bike as light as possible and i have had no problems with tyre wear but sometimes it would be nice to have a larger tyre on the rear on certain corners , it has taken alot of time to get my bike to work well on the 125 rubber and am now getting the benefits of that, I think if you went to 250 rubber you would have a bike that may be abit easier to ride and setup.

Thanks for the valuable info. I will chase the lightest 250 wheels I can. There are a few out there its just a matter of getting hold of them. Still lots of bits to acquire but looking forward to mocking up the engine and getting stuck in.
Will try post some picks when I have made a little progress.

Thats good to know. I'll run 165 and maybe just 50cc more.:innocent: Problem with projects like this is they take to long. I now need another sponsor. Anyone want to support a 40 year old hard charging bucket racer in F3?
Oh wait the phone is ringing! Bugger no luck, just forgot to return a video.
