so I recently got a 2005 Ducati Monster S4R and have been getting the hang of riding it as it's my first big bike. Anyhow I feel like a bit of an amatuer as I only just realised (stupid I know, I'm not very used to having 6 gears) it has a very outrageous 6th gear that only really becomes useable above 120kph. Until now I have been taking it up to rather high revs (8000rpm) in 5th when blasting on the straights to keep up with some friends of mine. As the bike does not seem to have a redline, I am wondering if it is bad for the engine to be worked up in this rpm range? From now on I will be using 6th gear now that I have found it. Does anyone actually knows what the redline is (there is none on the tach) and if any of you have the same bike, I'd be interested in knowing what you take the bike up to when out and about on the road?

I believe you can safely rev it to 2356 rpm before the cam belts and bearings have to be replaced. Re gears. Not many Duc owners know this but there is a little transfer gearbox on this generation. It gives Hi-Lo ratios, so in fact you have 12 forward gears and 16 reverse. The lever is under the petrol tank near the rear for ease of access by the pillion passenger

Wow that's awesome, How can I get my redline removed. Does it have something to do with upgrading to a red powerband?

In seriousness though, unless you're continuously and constantly bouncing off the limiter, the engine is able to take a lot more than you can give it. (at least on a Japper)

seriously though? anyone?? the tach does not have a redline on there at all, first bike I've had without one. I know the rev limiter apparently gives you a rather nasty bump at 10,500.

Google it. Or look in your manual.

Isn't this your answer?

I can tell you that you can quit comfortably sit on the revlimiter for the entire length of the Waipoua Forest without any problems. And it will actually reduce your fuel comsumption due to the engine constantly being turned off.

so is the rev limiter the same as the redline on bikes? I did scoure the manual with no luck.

What are you talking about?

If the limiter is at 10500rpm the redline will start about 9k or so.

ah okay great. I'm just trying to figure out wheret the redline is as it does not have one on the tach. Just a rev limiter that kicks in at 10,500rpm.

Animus,the redline on your S4 is 8000rpm.
If your bouncing it off the limiter in 5th gear,,your doing it damage.
Use google an hook up with one of the Monster or Ducati owners sites and learn something about your bike before you Fuck it.

I searched for quite some time and couldn't find a definite answer on the redline for the S4R. Luckily I wasn't bouncing off the rev limiter, just found by researching that it was at around 10,500rpm. Am curious where you found that info??

I did find out it produces peak power at 8750rpm. Interesting that the redline is before that!

get on, ride it like hell, wait for rev limiter to kick in. You have your redline.
ride it up to 100rpm below that point in every gear, everywhere you go, every time you ride.
Its what Jesus would do.

One must wonder if you need to redline in 5th to keep up with your mates whether you'll be around long enough to have to worry about the engine lasting.

By redline do you mean it doesnt valve bounce?
some bikes and cars have limiters that prevent it from bouncing..

Ride the snot out of it in first untill it blows up,
Congratulations, you found red.

Ducatis do not valve bounce....desmodromics its called...great engineering solution to the valve bounce problem.

Rev limiter in 5th? on public roads...I assume you are having a lend?

How many teeth on your primary sprocket?

You want quick gear changes? 3rd gear, throttle wide open, pressure under gear lever after 7000....when it hits the limiter you will be in 4th in a flash...Dont back off, keep the throttle pinned....4th to 5th do the same and 5th to 6th....then when you reach 140kph, back off because if you get caught you will be walking.

I sold my S4R in December, can't remember the redline limit but seem to recall there was one but you had to look hard to see it. The line around the outside of the dial changed colour. Maybe 9,500? Probably more than you should need on the road?

Many (most?) owners fit a 14t sprocket. It makes the bike easier to ride in town and in the tight stuff. You'd need to check though, it may have one already.

The belts are supposed to be changed every two years, whether the bike is used or not. Of course if you feel really really lucky you wouldn't need to bother...
But that could be seriously expensive.

Just change up when it runs out of puff, let the feeling of the bike be your guide... or the rev limiter... it's their to stop you hurting the bike. I've never ridden that model, but I'm picking if there is no obvious red line on the tacho, or no tacho at all, then it's probably not making power way up high, so you'll be naturally changing well before the red line in any case.

I put "Ducati S4R redline" into google and it was the first post on the first site that came up.
They were busy bitching about it because they thought it was to low.
I've never ridden an S4 but my old SD900 "yes I know" was going fucking hard by about 7000rpm.

10500 is mighty high for a road going V twin, Italian or otherwise
