I was thinking about popping along and coming for a hoon, I figure cause I'm so new (still under 20 hours ever on a bike) it would be good to see how others ride, maybe get some advice, but.. I'd be riding a lil 125 with a top speed of 90.. so don't really wanna hold anyone up (unless this is the learners pace anyway) lol thoughts?

I went along on my first ride with about the same amount of experience as you, and it was really enlightening. I say go for it.

I just pretend my second WNR didn't happen :baby:

I have suggested BK, Halswell, Old TaiTap, Gebbies, round the bays to Port, thru the Tube to either the Valley or the Ferrymead, for the cruisey group. So 90k won't be too far off the pace. So come along and enjoy the ride MS.:2thumbsup:2thumbsup

I think the faster group was talking about going to the Hurunui Pub. If they are could they leave a few minutes earlier please.

Thankyou BOR I hope to see you along on Wednesday. I hope your "pancake" is going well.:laugh::laugh:

And second ride?????? What second ride??

I'll definitely be along, just so I can do another WNR on the cibby before I sell it.

Sounds good to me. Just let me know when you want to go.

Would be up for a blat but sidelined with a free dinner :facepalm::shifty: , will have to hold it until next week (or later, got a new job to start so timetable could well be a bit screwed up).

Have a good ride, all.

Is anyone keen on the Hurunui on Wednesday night? If not I'll turn up at burger king and ride the hills with whoever shows up.

Hopefully the weather is fine. A day like yesterday would be ideal.

I'd be keen to do the Hurunui run but looking at Met Services Forecast for Wednesday "Mainly fine, chance late shower. Northwesterlies" So it's starting to look like typical WNR weather.

As I said in several earlier posts the faster guys can go to the Hurunui if they choose and those that are left can go around the Port Hills.

The "faster guys" can either leave about 6.15 or depart from elsewhere.

For "those that are left" we will have a very short briefing at 6.25 to leave at 6.30.

My suggestion for the cruisey group is BK, Halswell, Old Taitap Rd, Gebbies, round the bays to Port and thru the tube to the Valley.

so let me get this right..... the faster guys should ride the straight boring roads to the Hurunui for a pizza,... and the slow guys get to ride round the hills with all the bends and cool things..??? maybe its cause im new, but that seems a lil backwards to me...,

Its a great bit of road that I like... suppose its because I grew up out that way and commuting that road a lot the past few years when living in Hanmer

ridden the hills heaps in the past when I last lived in CVhch so no not scared of them... dont know where you get that Idea from...

sorry, i just dont understand why the faster guys would want to ride on straight bits of roads for the 1st WNR and the slower cruiser guys would want to go for a nana ride round the hills..? surely the faster guys would have more fun round the hills on their sports bikes and the slow nana harley riders would enjoy the straight road the nui has to offer?? but hey thats just my way of thinking.. i know straight roads dont do it for me
and if the "fast riders" get thier kicks from staight roads and pizza, maybe they just aint that fast... lol,

It's more a case of the so called "fast guys" headed off for a 160km return trip while the so called "slow guys" head off on a 50km loop around the city.

Both roads are interesting in their own ways.

Well I figured people wouldn't really want to head all the way into town, just to come back out. And based on previous experience, you'd probably be at woodend by 7.

Also as its a longer trip, it would possibly be nice to sit in the sun to eat pizza.

Just my 2 cents.

I'll check back later today and decide what I'm gonna do. If no one is keen for the 6pm meet, then I'll just do the hills with Gloplug. I don't mind where we go, as long as the company is good.

Also, as a note to everyone here, please do not feed the trolls. Recognise when you are being wound up, ignore it and move on.

Meh "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" or in this case those who don't know the past are destined to repeat it.

Nothing worse than going for a ride in a group and having to scrape some silly bastard off the side of the road and load them into an ambulance, or having said silly bastard blame the riders who applied first aid, organised the meat wagon and calmly explained to the cops what happened so next weeks ride is not bogged down in law enforcement.

Sometime folks who are offering help do so because they can see potential for a mess occurring, or they may have a tip that will help out, to add another proverb, he who is his own teacher, has a fool for his pupil.

Don't want to come there is no obligation to, unhappy with the format well organise another ride, its been done in the past and will be again.

We used to let the "faster riders" head to the same destination and leave earlier that way the learners would not get in their way or tangled up, at the end we all got a feed and a drink, had a good time and used our bike for what they were meant for. There were occasions where the faster riders were overtaken by the slower group as the all stopped for a ciggie or simply the guy was not that fast after all.

Agree!!!!!!! Now let's leave this person to go and bother others.

For those who came in late the cruisey ride is BK, Halswell, Old Taitap rd, Gebbies, round the bays to Port, thru the tube to the Valley.

Thought i might update you guys on the events of our Wednesday night ride since me and Peter never made it to the pub. So initially coming out of the Lyttleton Tunnel i lost sight of the front pack and assumed you guys went straight through the 100km/h zone. I shot through the 100km/h zone thinking that i'd catch up but you guys must you have turned off somewhere. At this point in time i was followed by Peter on his Virago who's bike decides that now's as good a time as any to run out of petrol  luckily though it started up after a few attempts with whatever was left in his reserve tank and we limped it to the nearest petrol station. We than made our way back to Opawa in an attempt to find you guys. We gave up after about half an hour riding around and getting hungrier so we decided to call it a night.

On the way home we got pulled over for what has to be the funniest police stop ever. I'll let you guys figure out why that is.

Ah, Transalper has the missing number plate, he saw it on the side of the road, and pulled over to grab it.. I actually commented that it wouldn't be so fun getting pulled over when your numberplate with rego and wof had fallen off, it's rather unfortunate you ran into a cop on the way home.
We were headed to the Valley Inn Tavern, right here (http://goo.gl/maps/X9NTe).

LOL, was just writing this when my internet went down...
Anyone lost a licence plate with Reg and WOF stickers attached off a 2009 Yamaha XV250 I picked it up off the middle of the road in Gebbies Pass tonight.
If you want it back let me know but the only bit fully intact is the Rego holder. Maybe a souvineer for the owner though.

Now, why did it fall off?... well it is because you can not attach a licence plate to a bike by only two screws at the top and then hang stuff off it like rego & wof holders at the bottom.
The metal fatigues through vibration from bike and/or road and sooner or later well I think you know the result. I've seen it happen over and over but usually on adventure bikes including my own which is actually how the shop mounted it from new... but it didn't last.

Other than that a pleasant enough ride tonight and Gareth, I'd be happy doing the Huruni Pizza run sometime on me 'Alp. Corners may be good but I wouldn't want to let a few straights put me off going somewhere... after all the only real corners are gravel and I didn't see any of those tonight either..

I'll be honest, I didn't get to the end of the video. It went black and finished so I closed that tab. Maybe I'll have to watch the credits in future.

Quite nice huh? It's really hard finding good songs that could go with a bike video that isn't the usual loud rock. There's plenty of free (Creative Commons) stuff around but a lot of it is a bit ... amateur or under par. Then from time to time you'll come across a real Gem.

Yep, so ADVers take the first turn over the big bridge, roadies take the second.
ADVers could separate from the group at the Main North Rd (Chaneys Corner) regroup if we haven't done so already to make sure anyone who wasn't paying attention at the brief doesn't accidently follow us.

Shoshoni and I were the only two that split off for the Adv route.
Was all good, I was very happy on the gravel, rocks & in the watery bits on the first decent test of the roady tyres on the Transalp. I managed to stay out of the bog.

Alas it's a total brick. It was suck in a boot loop, sometimes called a soft brick, but now it won't turn on at all, called a hard brick.
There's no recovery or fast boot options as it's completely stock.
I think at this point it can only be recovered via hardware, and I would imagine the price of that would be more than a new second hand phone.

Sorry haven't posted route yet:Oops:

BK, Dyers, Gebbies, L onto Millars Rd (near the end of the first shortish straight after Gebbies) first regroup as above Millars Rd just before SH75. Some will go the whole way to Akaroa some will stop at Hilltop Pub.

Where's an embeddable link to "Long Way Home" by Supertramp when you need it, eh?

And agree on the nice ride; the R1100 may be out for the next couple as the squeaking bird is overtightened rear swingarm bearings; some people just don't know when to stop, really. Probably saveable but a bit of a fiddly PITA I wasn't expecting to have to wade into just yet (and murphy's law rules that the specific BIG (27mm) spanner I've got for the same bolts on the K1100 isn't big enough for the the R, they made the damn lock nuts bigger so off to George Henry's tomorrow, probably on the way to your alternator!)

So how did it go? Got mine to stop squeaking - amazing how tight someone can over-torque a tapered roller bearing (enough to raise .25mm pits for each roller, all high-chrome case-hardened steel, totally munted)... lucky they didn't strip the thread on the adjuster plug or crack the casting IMHO. Luckily had a spare bearing anyway so it's in now & the rubber ducky has been retasked elsewhere...

Port Levy sounds good, maybe the Taitap? I know it's later in the trip for some but they were good sorts for the invasion last time round -and parking ass and getting some food without having too get too deep back into riding mode was (aka relaxing) was most pleasant too. Sad there's no Godley house, was a good stop-over for the less adventurous (more thirsty?) but no point in flogging a dead horse (unless you're a a politician).

G my ego is so badly bruised it will probably never recover.:violin::violin: :violin:I remained more or less upright throughout, it was GB that hit the gravel.:facepalm::facepalm:

My dear old GB has one very bad habit, when it comes back to idle it will on some occasions cut out. I understand it is a carburation issue with the GBs. As the electric leg is US I have to use my own. I overbanced when when kickstarting. GB fell over. Max assisted getting a flooded engine restarted. Took fifteen minutes or so.

Hey what happened to you last night. You were missed.

Hey what happened to you last night. You were missed.

Working overtime tends to make you tired, not worth the risk riding when energy levels are low Gary. 11hrs work then ride 200k, not a really wise move at my age. Well any age for that matter. It will be the new year before work slows up enough , dont want the "lets lie down for a wee sleep" demon catching me again eh.

Big bouquet to Max and the people who helped pickup GB. (Getting too old for this game):killingme:killingme:killingme

KP my ego is nearly as bruised as the time I dropped (Walter?????) but ego is the only personal casualty. Clutch lever and gear pedal slightly bent and soon straightened enough to be usable. (note to self. .... MUST FIX THE ELECTRIC START. .........)

Good to know your all right, your not the only one who has falling over and had bruised ego as Crim keeps reminding me about a river crossing we did .

I thought falling over for the amusement of others was an occupational hazard and therefore acceptable part of river crossings.

Yep, that's what river crossings are for. So we can have a laugh at those that don't make it before we go and give a hand... and then spread it round the web if it was caught on camera.

Yes SS??? Do tell!!

We came in from Loburn side and get to Okuku River and no one want's to go first with our bikes.
So I waid through on foot river flow is about knee height I get to the other side and turn back.
On the way back the guys are pointing at something behind me (and no it wasn't Jaws) I turn lose my footing and fall in and I'm sitting in water up past my chest, I knew that we would get wet on the ride but I wasn't expecting to be that wet.

Yes be thankful there were no gopros around. Unlike on Wednesday night. I have a few rather dark seconds of vid complete with audio of me going down with GB!!

Well, slightly off topic but the K1100 has gone as of this AM, so you lot will have to be stuck with me on the bra-less Guzzi lookalike now; the K11 is staying local so do not wave :wings: /honk :Punk: /give finger :motu: to the new owner, it won't be me!! Already wonder how long I can resist the temptation to put road tyres on the new beasty (even found the sheepskin again! - fluffy to make up for the lack of funky seat curves). Had one almost-wheelie so far - going around a corner - so maybe not.

If it's Akas again this week, be warned that the coffee @ the Hilltop is mighty tempting; they really need to get the F&C going again, then lazy asses like me would be happy to go the extra (literally).

Hey with all this talk of floating, and petrol being lighter than water IIRC, would the tank on this double as a flotation device? :innocent::innocent::innocent:
