View Full Version : Wellington: Tuesday evening: BRONZ Slowpaced Social Ride
Ratti
26th September 2011, 09:25
Well, hello All, here we are again. Finally it's daylight saving time and we have enough light of an evening to make it fun to go riding. Following the success of last seasons Tuesday Slowpaced Rides, BRONZ Wellington is running them again. This year we have got trained Ulysses members alongside to be ride leaders. These folk have a wealth of experience and are a valuable asset to the motorcycling community. While they won't be in a position to do any actual mentoring on the night ( this needs to be done one-on-one ) , they will be happy to talk over problems you are having and offer possible solutions.
The point of these rides is to have fun and meet up with other riders. The emphasis is on learning about road hazards and how to avoid them and to get your confidence and skills moving along at the same pace.
We meet on Tuesday evenings at about 6pm, leaving promptly at 6.30. Meeting place and the route taken will vary from week to week. The calendar up to Christmas is here, any queries can be posted here and I'll help you out.
Meeting Places as follows
Round the Bays route. Leave the Self serve Caltex station in Kaiwharawhara at 6.30.
Upper Hutt route meet at Duckpond at Avalon Park
Porirua Route Meet at Aotea lagoon,
Lower Hutt Meet at Duck Pond, Avalon Park
Makara Meet at Self Serve Caltex in Kaiwharawhara,
October 4 Round the Bays
October 11 Upper Hutt
October 18 Porirua
October 25 Lower Hutt
November 1 Makara
November 08 Round the Bays
November 15 Upper Hutt
November 22 Porirua
November 29 Lower Hutt
December 06 Makara
December 13 Round the Bays
December 20 Upper Hutt
See you out'n'about

They are well worth it. Good to get in with a group of riders of similar ability. Tend to end up hanging out and riding together for a long time to come. The Ulysses mentors are great guys with a wealth of knowledge, and one team of ride leaders is from TSS Red Baron bike shop here in the Hutt. The riding community here is quite small but it's nice to have contacts who share the obsession with 2 wheels.

If it's to wet you can always come along to the BRONZ meeting at the Parrot at 7pm as an alternate plan.

I'm going to do it rain or shine this year. Should extreme winds come along, then I'll cancel but not otherwise.
I second the visit to a BRONZ meeting if it does need to be cancelled. Friendly bunch of folk and if you dont know what BRONZ is about, it's a good chance to ask lots of questions.

LAst weeks ride saw 4 people turn out in spite of the rain. People, as motorcyclists we will ride in and out of all sorts of weather. This is why these rides will go ahead in all but hail or howling gales.
Report from the Ride Leader said that by the time they got to the finish point, the newest rider was coping well with the wind and keen as anything to carry on. Good on you!
This weeks ride meeting at the Duckpond in Avalon Park and doing the Upper Hutt Route. This is one of my favourite routes, taking in a bit of rural riding, some gentle cornering and a bit of loose surface practice. All good stuff and well worth turning up for.
See you on Tuesday about 6, leaving 6.30

A brillliant ride on Tuesday. Around Plimmerton, followed the leader around the inlet and I believe a spot of slowspeed playing. Nice to see the newer riders and a big welcome and 'thanks' to the senior riders who took time to come along and share their knowledge.
This week sees us having a wander about the wilds of Lower Hutt. Meeting at the Duckpond in Avalon Park, leaving 6.30.
See you there!

Last nights ride was fairly well attended..in spite of the bumpy air conditions. A great variety of bikes on show...from the MIghty 250 Scorp up to Ron's T-wheeled beast. Nice to catch up with familiar faces, and good to be able to introduce folk who are new to each other. that's what motorcycling is all about, having fun social times with like minded folk.

Don't forget folks, that this weekend's BRONZ Anniversary Rally has two rides - one of which is a slowpaced/learner style ride as well.

You can come along just for the ride, or some food and entertainment afterwards as well, and even crash the night if you like.

Nice to see you again. Now that Ive had time to think about it, Yes, I do recall you from last season. I must say the new ride fits you a LOT better than your previous one.
Practice is a good thing. The Uysses mentoring team are really earning their keep!
Do also check out the VERY CHEAP rider training days. There is a link to them on BRONZWellington website. $20 for a whole day with a very experienced trainer...can't go wrong.

Time for an update on how the rides are going so far this season.
We have just done our 6th evening ride. Feedback from both senior and newer riders indicates that the rides are achieving what I had hoped for i.e: a safe , fun environment for new riders to practice and an enjoyable social time getting to know other riders.
I am pleased to see familiar faces from last season as well as repeat riders from this season. Motorcycling is as much about hanging out with like-minded folk as anything else. Score for BRONZ Wellington Slo-paced Social Rides!
I'm really rapt with the turnout last night. We had a great mix of experience levels, two guys with 4-5 weeks on a bike, some returning riders and some who have never given up. They heard about the rides in a range of places, the article the Capital Times ran, BRONZ website, Kiwibiker and through TSS Red Baron.
Plenty of room for more riders, anyone from scooters to thumpers, if you choose to be on two wheels, come along next Tuesday and see what we are about.
cheers, Ratti

Brilliant evening to ride. Hope everyone who turned up enjoyed it too.
I am SO stoked! Andrew Templeton from Ridesafe came along to watch how we do things. For those of you who don't know him, he and his wife hold contracts in North and SOuth Islands to run Rider Training programmes and do license testing. These folk train everyone from Lplaters to instructors and mentors. VERY experienced people. After the ride and some very helpful feedback from him, he told us why he had come along. It was to suss us out to see if this ride might be suitable to send learners from his classes along to. he is looking for careful, sensible riders who are courteous, ride well together and able to be taught. WE PASSED MUSTER! Yippee!
Andrew mentioned that he sees a lot of riders and riding that makes him shudder, but was impressed with our bunch and is happy to send along learners.
Big ups to the Ulysses mentors, the senior riders and the noobs and returning riders who are making these rides a success. We must be doing it right, cos believe me, if we weren't, Andrew would have told us last night.
I hope this encourages some of you who have been nervous of joining us to get along and get some time on the road.
See you next week.

Well done m'dear. We are very lucky to have you organising these rides for people to gain confidence and experience.
K has even suggested we ride on Tuesdays instead of the usual TCWNR this year if you are happy to put up with us, even though it felt like a license test with Andrew behind us!
Five out of five from us, and I hope there are many novices and returning riders that take advantage of this awesome resource to improve their skills over the coming summer months.

Really BD? Wow, that's pretty cool. Of course you would be welcome along. I know what you mean about having Andrew behind us tho...nervous nervous nervous!
remember, it's as much about socialising as it is about learning. Although, anyone who thinks they have nothing else to learn should probably stay home.

Always a pleasure, and an excellent opportunity to be in a social group ride with Andrew. He provides very good feedback, and over the years his riding courses are continuously improving. I was very pleased to see him promoting the local councils that subsidize rider training - for $20 to spend on his all day Rider Improvement course that is a done deal - and I encourage newbies and returning riders to take up that offer.
Ratti when you asked me to lead the group out to Wainuiomata Coast, it was very much a coincidence that I rode out there Sunday morning on one of my regular Sunday morning rides. It was a good opportunity last night to provide the 'heads up' mentioning that the road had new seal for the last four kilometers leading to the coast. Oh and yes the wee lambs jumping about.
I mentioned to Andrew how far the motorcycle community has come since February 2010 when there was a NZ Police supported rider training day out at Martinborough. May the participation long continue with you and BRONZ coordinating these Tuesday events, as well as the constructive assistance of the qualified riding mentors from Ulysses.

For anyone who is keen, one of the Ulysses members has offered to set up a slow riding circuit on SUnday 29th Jan in the Riverbank carpark in Lower Hutt. I'm unsure of the details yet, but having had a shot at this, can state they are challenging and heaps of fun. BRONZ riders are also invited to this event.

Great stuff though, and thanks for the tips too. I practiced on the gravel strip on the way home too - lots of careful skids.
Edit: Sorry I'll say that again now that a few people have told me that I'm not making any sense:
Great ride guys, I really enjoyed it aye - nice to get out with other people and do stuff without feeling the need to speed up and show off :)
I think it would have been good if the ride ended at a cafe or McDs or something - I thought we were going to hook up at the latter but no-one showed while I was waiting (I admit that I might not have been listening all that good though...).

As usual a really good ride this week. Ably lead by one of our Ulysses mentors. Tikkytour up to Wrights Hill, over to the Generator in Brooklyn then in to Newtown maccas. 16 bikes of mixed abilitiy, usual high standard of behaviour and courtesy. Well done people.
I hope the noobs are finding these a skill challenge and the senior riders are being challenged to think about their riding habits and whether anything needs to be changed.
Only a few more rides to go now...I'd encourage participants to be thinking about swapping contact details so you can continue to meet up for rides once this series has finished. These are about socialising and forming contacts within the riding community as much as improving skill levels.
Due to my new work hours, we will be kicking off a bit later on Tuesday evenings. The meeting place and area we will be riding in remains the same, just the start time is delayed by 15-20 minutes. No excuses for anyone else to be late now! ( you know who I mean )
See you next Tuesday as per the schedule.

9th March 2012, 12:34
Of concern from this weeks ride...I know I said ride your own ride, BUT...
you all knew the route we were going to take. Why did a large part of the pack follow someone who veered off the route? The rider who went that way is not a senior rider let alone the ride leader. If he was a senior rider, he'd have enough experience to know to stop and shoo everyone back the right way. Think about what is happening, don't just blindly follow the leader.
Once a group breaks up, the point of riding as a group becomes a fail. We lose riders, and who will be there should anything go wrong? With so many noobs in these rides, I really do expect a lot from Senior Riders in the way of looking out for each other.
IN future, if you're not going to ride the route, please stay parked until ALL the group riders have moved out. Then you can do whatever you want. I'm not a control freak, but I do have to keep a tight rein on the overall form of the group.
On a happier note, I am impressed at the willingness of new riders to give things a shot at a speed they are comfortable with. These are SLOWPACED rides and the slowest rider is in charge of setting the pace. ANyone who doesn't want to ride this slowly won't come with us, so there is never any pressure to go faster than you are able.
Welcome along to older riders who are stepping back into the game.
see you all next week. Reminder that we will be starting slightly later as I have trouble getting to the meeting place on time due to work committments.
cheers

Points well taken.
Prior to leaving Avalon I mentioned I would not complete the whole ride from Pauatahanui to Paekakariki Hill, and that I would carry on around the inlet to Mana. I understand that Pauatahanui was going to be the mid point for riders to then be identified who were going not going to proceed to Paekakariki Hill.
I rode immediately behind the ride leader, from Avalon to Pauatahanui, where we all stopped and I parked immediately behind the ride leader. We chatted generally and when no discussion was had to the whole group collectively to identify who else was not going to proceed up to Paekakariki Hill, I thought this will be interesting. I observed that neither Rider Leader nor TEC liaised, nor was I given any heads up about remaining behind until after the group departed.
When Rider Leader moved off I followed immediately behind him and when I approached the T-Junction (Paekakariki Hill and Pautahanui Inlet) I indicated to the rider behind me to proceed through the intersection to follow Ride Leader which he did. As I proceeded half a kilometre down the inlet road, I then noticed three or four bikes a ways back, and said to myself 'well these must be the non Paekakariki Hill riders'.
When I arrived at Shell Mana, I thought to myself, 'Hmmm me thinks there may have been a stuff up' however neither Ride Leader nor TEC confronted me in person when they arrived at Shell Mana.
Again the points are well taken.
