John Boyle (Boyle Kawasaki) did something similar many years ago on a "PE 750" which was a GS750 with knobbies on. He used the engine cases as rudders when cornering. Very spectacular.

Maybe at Wauinui Beach then? Because as long as it looks (which Wainui ain't really)...I don't recognize the hills in the backround as being the main beach. Must go have another peep.

I know of an XS750 that ran knobs many moons ago. Its in the old mans garage.

Best way to stop things at 100mph plus at the beach is to simply throw them sideways. Doesn't matter what it is...

I used to roar up and down the ocean beach west of Dargaville on my Benelli Supersport 250 many years ago. Only good for about 140 though.

Tony McMurdo ran his brand new GSXR1100 on the beach way back then. Was good until it spun the front sprocket nut off...

That is so cool....:not:
That R1 is owning it up too. But the guy must have some cash to burn to risk it like that. Not to mention the clean and service that things going to need after that

An old R1 like that is probably worth a third of what a new MX bike costs.

Yep - Makorori Beach looking north to Makorori Hill me thinks.

He must have a good steering damper on that thing! Power to weight must be ok, as the chap with a K100 Beemer who comes to the Nelson beach races each year throws up a massive rooster tail all the time. Not in the same league as an R1 but it's still a big fast road bike, not an MXer :niceone: The R1-powered quad was horn but crapped out early on, unfortunately. Didn't see the other big-engine quad ('Busa?) last year though.
Is the speedo driven off the gearbox on an R1?

my old man won the NZ title on a knobby tired GS1000 at gisbourne in 1986 (or 87) ,
there was some very fast bikes that ran out of the papakura club at kerotahi until they stopped about 5-8 years ago,
the R1 is next level tho,

I had a mate who put his Mach4 on the beach at Pekapeka in 1972complete with knobblies, (if that's what you still call them ?)
At the end of the day the crank was stuffed.

Probably because it ate sand through bad air cleaner maintenance!

there was a link to a speedo shot 228k or there abouts :cool:That's why I asked about the speedo drive, because it appeared to follow expected wheelspin dropping off during gear changes. There has to be some significant wheelspin there.
My 640 Adventure was showing 155 km/h from the front wheel when the back wheel was making revolutions for 185 km/h, and that was with a new dedicated mud/sand knobbly at 11psi - about as much grip as I'm ever going to get in the soft stuff. I'd like to know what sort of tyres and pressures he was running, and what sort of wheelspin? The R1 has a much better power-to-weight which might get the chassis "up on the 'plane" as it were, yielding more drive with less resultant wheelspin. I'm curious, because the 640A will do the 185 on the tarseal, so if I can eliminate some wheelspin I'll pick up some top speed.

Funnily enough, I've always found when running at the beach lowering the pressure fucked a mud/sand tyre, by causing the tyre to 'squish' closing up the knob spacing if that makes sense. Slightly higher pressures to get the tyre to hold it's designed shape and open up the knobs worked much better for me. Around 15-16 psi.

Muddy conditions I need really low pressure to get the tyre to flex and spread out, but the beach is actually a lot firmer than that.

I can imagine that coming off would be rather messy...ones body wouldn't slide or roll...it would dig into the sand and decelerate rather quickly.

Wouldn't be pretty. I've been ejected on the beach a few times at some quite high speeds, but nothing like the speeds that fruit cake was doing!!
Looks like a B-King to me...even the engine. So wonder if it really is GSXR1000 powered?

I can imagine that coming off would be rather messy...ones body wouldn't slide or roll...it would dig into the sand and decelerate rather quickly.Yes, I can tell you from first hand experience that you tumble and end up eating lots of sand. I was ejected from the seat at near top speed, ended up kissing the front guard but then staying balanced, upright rolling straight ahead yet out of control. I decided to try to gently roll off the bike rather than spear into the quad & trailer carrying the spare steel fencing! This all went on long enough for a photographer to change cameras, change battery packs, and still rip off quite a long sequence of shots of it all. One classic shot is me on my knees with sand draining out of my helmet while the bike is still airborne cartwheeling behind me.
I certainly wouldn't want to try that stunt at the top speed of an R1 or gixxer thou... or even in the top half of their speed capability, even on the beach!!
