Dyna Switchback

Just started my second shift on the Dyna Switchback with the new 103 cube engine.

Digging it heaps. It's got some pretty good get up and go - launches really well.

It's a pretty much a cross between a Road King and a Sportster, with removable hard bags and screen on a reasonably compact bike.

The idea is take the luggage off and it's your cruiser, fit the kit and it's not a bad touring rig.

I like it, but I think I'd prefer the 1200 Sporty as this looks a bit heavy. Of course I understand it's supposed to be a more versatile Harley and it certainly looks as though it fits the bill. :yes:

Perfect Friday in Brisbane. Cloudless with a gentle sou-wester, temps in the mid 20's so I hit the road south to the Gold Coast soon after the morning peak.

Headed down the M1/Pacific Highway, which is a nicely engineered bit of super-slap - concrete and 5 lanes wide in each direction in parts - mostly 4 wide with a 110 limit.

The Switchback is very smooth at highway speeds and has a good surge for carving up the freeway. Once up to speed, pretty much all vibes from the engine disappear and it is just smooth and strong and I found it quite comfortable.

Made the Gold Coast in good time, but what a shitfight. Last day of the school holidays and it's a 50km strip of traffic gridlock.

It was a good opportunity to see how the bike goes in heavy traffic. Pretty nicely. It's narrow enough to effectively split to the front at the lights* and as stated - it launches really well with the 103 cube donk.

I rode up to Southport and then headed into the hinterland for some NZ-like twisties through the hills.

Like all cruiser based models, ground clearance isn't its strong point, but it tracks and holds a line over undulating surfaces round corners well, brakes are good - one finger good (if you have hands like mine) and overall it's very pleasant and willing - for the type of vehicle.

I made my way north back into Brisbane, called in to Morgan & Wacker and bought a new helmet and pair of gloves while I was there.

Overall opinion is of the bike is very favourable. I did a couple of hundred ks non stop and was just starting to get slightly saddle-sore for the last 20, but that's more about my size than any shortcomings with the seat.

Good, versatile machine.

Looks an interesting concept but really don't like the look of the exhaust, looks strange and non Harley like, maybe I need to see it up close. Totally agree on the 103, I have a 2011 RK with Stage 1 Screaming Eagle set up...excellent...Just imported a set of Iron Bags to replace the hard bags, they look great and have a larger capacity.

Great video review....a Switchback Demo has just arrived at Rolling Thunder.....free to ride at Biketoberfest this Saturday from 9am onwards or by appointment.
