Ive decided on an upgrade from the tired GN, a 2 stroker, must be good condition, Km's ideally sub 30k, an RGV 250 from what I've heard is one of the better/more powerful 250 2 strokers around, looked on trademe to find mainly examples with high mileage and/or dodgy sellers.

Would like to hear opinions from you people in the know.

Cheers

I good condition, low mileage RGV...

Price would be what? about $5-6K?

Just wait till ya get your full.
Although, jumping from GN to the RGV would be some fun to watch.

How committed are you in wanting a two stroke bud.Coz they aint for the half-arsed as they require the patience of a saint and the faith of the born-again.Backsliders go fourstroke as they don't have the commitment that brings it's own rewards.

Most two stroke road bikes these days are going to be up there in the mileage stakes but that can be a good thing if the previous owner ran her regularly and has receipts to prove any recent rebuilds. So always ask and walk away if they don't.

RGV's are the bees-knees but their one serious weak point is the powervalves which need to be checked regularly for cracks and/or wear.

Have a browse on this website http://www.rgv250.co.uk/ and if your still keen then welcome to a whole new addiction.

I'm pretty set on a 2 stroke, I don't know any four stroke 250 that isn't going to be a waste of time as I'm 10 months out from my full and the power gains probably wouldn't be worth the cost.
Summers coming however and I'm defiantly willing to throw money at it to maintain it, my only worry being how well its been maintained up until then, I don't want to end up with a 5k pile of metal.
How bad can the problems be on the RGV? I'm aware of the power valve problem but aside from that when they do have problems, are they really-bad problems?

If K's aren't too much of a problem given good upkeep could I get away with say this?

Cheap price so I could always replace bits of the engine internals with extra cash.

Just as a reference I'd probably put about 10000k's on it in a year. Too many for a bike as volatile?

Thanks guys

Dont buy another 250 if your 10 months out, Just either stick on the GN or get a real bike,
I have another 6/12 depending if I do my defensive driving, I have been on a 400 for 6 - 7 months .. (also in Dunedin btw check out www.southernrider.co.nz)
smokers are worth every penny spent on them, the problem is, you need to spend every penny on them.

I think you should consider not just the mileage of what you're looking at but the age also, 20 years is a long time. What are your 10,000k's per annum actually doing; Commuting/Fanging ratio?.

Do a spec comparison on a ZXR250 too I reckon.

Depends where he lives I guess,
If hes out my way down the peninsular then its 98% Fang, 2% commute.

Yeah I'd love an RS250, good find bro, anybody know how much more expensive it is for parts vs an RGV?

That second RGV, is that the Japanese restricted version?
