Excellent. Now I don't have to choose between telling my son to break the law and ride above 70, or ride with him at 70 and be a sitting duck for other traffic.

Bout time, Although, I should really be getting out there and getting my Restricted and Full...
Further parts of the updated road rules affecting motorcycle riders need more lead-in time to implement and will come into force in October 2012. They include replacing the current 250cc engine capacity restriction for novice riders with a power-to-weight ratio based restriction
Soo... This time next year the LAMS list applies eh?? Sweet

About time, was a place maybe way back in the late 70-80's when limit on open road was 80km,but not when it went to 100km.

New motorcycle restriction laws not coming into effect until October 2012. Epic will be on my full before then and flick off my 250 for a reasonable price!

About time. While I was happy to observe the 70kph restriction intially on my L I quickly found it frustrating. There are plenty of roads/places for learners to gain confidence with gradually increasing their riding speed whereby they don't feel they have to travel at 100 (i.e. open road/motorway). However for many the frustration of being punitively punished for that minimum 6 month period of L-ship, or however long they choose to be on their L, has never made sense to me.
I often travelled at 100 on the motorway and just hoped that my otherwise sensible riding would make me a less likely target for license breach. Never got pulled over.

Good to see that stupid rule removed at last and making it safer for learners to ride with the flow of traffic rather than get in the way and endanger themselves to the unweary.

Some ... on 250's capable of travelling at 100 km/hr ... and with a bit of experience on back roads, at that speed ... maybe ...
But ... those with a bike barely (or not) capable of that speed ... with little open road experience ...
How long before the first ... that lets their bravado overule their ability ... and gets hurt ...

I reckon that the rule changes won't make much of a difference as the people that would be more inclined to push it whilst on their L plate would have been doing so no matter what the law stated.

Funny how prior to the law change, for learners doing 100 kph it was deemed "dangerous", a day later it's all of a sudden "safe". Just shows how stupid some laws are really!

For my own selfish reasons I'm rather happy that the 250 restriction remains for now. Got one to sell in a week or so and my resale value will still be there.....
Damn good thing about the 70km law.

Haha, yeah I was thinking about that when I bought my bike recently. In the end I just wasn't prepared to wait for the proposed law change to get a learner legal bike.

I'm pretty sure the only legal bikes bigger than 250 will be slow as fuck and not even worth a purchase.. Better off with a GN250 or something xD

IF the list is the same as the Australian one, then the Kawasaki ER5 will be learner legal. Great little bike that one

Excellent, my ducklings will be OK to ride on the motorway. :)
For the LAMS list, as I understand it, it'll be bikes under 250cc (excepting the Suzuki RGV250, Kawasaki KR250, Honda NSR250, Yamaha TZR250, and Aprilia RS250), as well as the LAMS-approved bikes - this being what they have in Aussie. Is this correct?
