Did you end up finding one? I ask as I have a vt250 spada I'm looking at selling soon?

There is a low K's Spada on Trademe at the moment, don't know what the reserve is, carjam on the plate (see one of the questions) shows the K's are probably accurate...

Ad says there is a "spare bike" with it too.

No not really, bout the same as most 250s. They do/did produce a good deal more power (40hp) than most 250s (especially modern one) and the 6 speed gearbox is helpful in making use of it too.

Sure the Hyosung GT250R for example is larger but that's because it uses the full size frame with a 250 motor in it, I guess they forgot about power-to-weight ratios - the Hyo is about 28hp and 168kg, while the Spada is 40hp and 143kg.

Thanks, Sleemanj. Guess it's about the same as my old Zeal then? Or the new VTR250? If only there was a 250 like the Hyo but lighter and with more oomph.

I tried the GT250 Comet for a while and it was pretty lumbering/gutless. Had a Screaming Demon pipe on it which sounded good though...

Try one for size, they're not as roomy as a Hyosung, but they go a shit load better. They ride better than all the 40hp 4cyls because they have a flatter torque curve.
They go much better than the VTR250, they have more HP and a six speed box.
My favourite 4 stroke 250.

Very nice example, original decals too!
Not original mirrors, but who cares?
I'd own another very happily.

What are parts availability like though, both here and internationally?

It seems the main complaint about this bike is just finding parts, otherwise previous owners rated performance and reliability as high.

The Spada was imported here all official like I believe. Any good official Honda dealer should be able to get most any part direct from Honda. Or econohonda.co.nz

There is a service manual for the Spada available (it's been linked here on KB before, or google it, it's a whole pile of scanned images, I have it if anybody wants).

Also Microfiches for various bikes can be found online, I think the one below is for the Interceptor specifically but all the VTR series share a lot of stuff (eyeball is a good judge)...
http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/model_years/517-honda-1989-vtr-vtr250/assemblies/8899#

NB: I have a VTZ 250, which is a grey import Japanese domestic bike just preceding the Spada, getting parts for even that isn't a problem once you work out what the part number is.

Apart from the cams and heads, it's the same as a VT250 and VTR250 (except the gear sets in the VTR)
Oil filter is CBR250/TRX450 etc etc very common.
The fuel tap can let go, MC22/NC24/NC30 ones can fit (I learnt this after buying a brand new one because they don't sell the o-ring or the diaphragm)
Brakes are common, same as VTR250/MC19 as are the forks and seal.
Steering bearings are easy to get.
Air filter is easy to get.

I ran mine for 130k and the only expensive part was the fuel tap, which as explained didn't need to be.

Tyres are common and cheap sizes.

The oil feed to the cam chain tensioner should be bored out a tiny bit and you won't have tensioner problems

Anything else?

Does it come with factory air-bags? LOL

No, I'm sold on the Spada, thank you!

BTW, is the Spada basically a 250cc Bros?

Only the brake pads are the same, and they brake light switches, other than that, nope. (might be a few nuts 'n bolts that swap...)
It has a fancier frame than a Bros, but not a bitchin' single sided swinger. :weep:

Almost.
I've got a mate who picked up a Spada for just over a grand recently, not sure how good it is, I'll have to go check it over sometime.
I'd definitely own another one, I'd put MC22 fairing on it if I had another though, half fairing was nice, but it didn't look complete

Wow thats a good buy at $1K.I've been researching them and they look a whole lot better and lighter than the hornet.
If he's selling then I'd be keen as I can't find any for sale in NZ.

ducatilover
11th August 2012, 23:23
I doubt he's selling, he only just got it :D and if he sells it, it may end up in my garage.
They're 139kg dry, they're much easier to move around at slow speeds than a Hornet and pull better at all revs too (except up the top, they're pretty even)

zique
11th August 2012, 23:30

Btw any idea how OFTEN Spadas come up for sale?I'd rather one than a Hornet so I might just wait for one to come on the market.

crazest thing is that there is no rear shock ... and ive phoned everywhere i can and the cheapest i can get one for is 270 delivered or 310 delivered from aus ... so does anyone know of a rear shock that is cheap and will fit this ?
this aint that much off topic as i will sell this when she is running like it should

Firstly, I'm pretty sure that is mislabelled as a spada (if that is the correct picture as it looks likg and FG).
I have a leaky shock from an F2, which I pulled out of my F2 and replaced with an FG shock so I'm sure they are compatible. But it leaks and might cost you more than those others to get fixed...
PM this guy http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php/35762-328FTW he has a wee VT collection so is probably your best bet.

please disregard the photo in carjam as it is not the : vt250j 1988

thanks for that pm is sent. what is the value of these bikes in working order with low kms ?

bogan
1st October 2012, 20:44
Thats more like it, not too sure if the shock there will be the same as an FG/F2 though. I'd guess at around 2k as they must have taken a bit of a hit with the new LAMS regulation.

sorry but what is LAMS regulation ?

Learner bikes are not just limited to 250s anymore (LAMS list contains some as big as 650 I think, done on power to weight), so the price of 250s is expected to drop accordingly.

littlebigpuff
1st October 2012, 21:31
so a learner can drive a 650 as long as the power to weight is under a limit ?

sleemanj

Bikes over 250cc which are approved are on this list
http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/getting/motorcycles/approved-motorcycles.html#approved
no others over 250cc are approved (but the list will grow).

A few bikes under 250cc are now prohibited (2 stroke pocket rockets).

Your SPADA is still perfectly fine for Learner and Restricted, and indeed, is going to have a lot more go than most the stuff on that list :-)

ducatilover
2nd October 2012, 14:41
Good score on that Spada
AFAIK it runs the same swing arm as the VT250 that replaced it and the same shock, which would be the same as the CBR250R MC19 and probably the CB250 Jade (the 4 cyl one)
I sold my Spada for $2.5k or so a few years ago.
I'd happily pay $2k for a tidy one

littlebigpuff
5th October 2012, 02:42
so the MC19 and the jade will fit it ?
