Rode to work in rain today and after putting a disc lock on one of the front discs, my hand came away with watery oily gunk on it. Seems the disc has picked up some spooge from the road.

What's the simplest/best way to clean a brake disc? I figure just wiping it down won't remove any oily film.

Are you certain it is not just the dust from the brake pad material washing off?

Warm water and a mild bike wash detergent....

+1 to what LBD said....and more important-

Are you sure it isn't brake fluid!? (could be a leaking brake caliper pot...hope not!...but keep an eye on it just in case)

And yeah, warmish soapy water will do the trick, and just dry off after wards.

Thanks for both the above,

(Yes, good idea too - will clean and dry the whole "area", and use the time to re-check for leaks or other problems while I'm there.)

Also check that it isn't the front forks leaking oil.

You can clean disks with brake cleaner right?
