View Full Version : Selling my car - buying a bike - 1998 BMW 540i

Hi All,
- thrown in here as it doesn't fit in the "For Sale" section and it's not bike related. But if mods think it needs to be somewhere else, then so be it. (preferably not the round receptacle)
Selling my car:bye: Buying a bike:woohoo:
Problem is, no one's bought my car yet; so I can't buy my bike
Link to trademe: LINKY (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=413535339)
I know most people on here wouldn't be interested but I'm just trying to get the most audience I can. So if you know anyone who might be interested, I'd appreciate you passing on the details.
Few details:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-jkciyOh9SYE/TkrXmZTAtLI/AAAAAAAABTw/SkZe0c3CJVY/s640/11%252520-%2525201.jpg
Widely regarded as the finest executive saloon of the time.
Compare the features from factory:
210KW, 420nM 4.4L 32 valve quad cam V8.
5 speed auto
Factory Installed Transmission Cooler
Remote Mounted Oil Filter
S-EDC (electronic damper control)
ABS
Driver's and passengers front, side and curtain airbag (6 airbags).
4 star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Dynamic Stability Control
Setable Speed Limit Warning
Sunroof
Electric Steering Wheel adjustment
Electric Driver's and Passenger's seat adjustment.
3 Memory Seat settings (can be set to automatically adjust to the key used to open the car)
Rain sensing wipers
Automatic Dimming Rearview mirror (no more dazzling 4WD headlights)
Auto tilt passenger mirror (easy to see where the kerb is when reversing)
Front and Rear foglights
Electronic Rear Sunblind
Heated Leather Seats... mmmm
Steering Wheel Stereo & A/C controls
6 Disc CD Changer
8 Speakers
Full size spare wheel
Onboard tool kit
Programmable code immobiliser (won't start unless you enter the correct code - which you can choose when you lock the car)
Built December 1997 first registered in 1998.
Only travelled 125,000KM. Purchased at 79,500KM. Ex Japan I understand.
Had angel eye headlights, led tail lights and front lip when imported.
Since then I have:
Upgraded to 17" tyres, enough to help grip without losing comfort
New Water pump (metal prop) at 115,000KM
Auxilary and Main Belt done at the same time
Serviced with Shell Helix 5w-40 BMW LL.06 certified oil as required by onboard service notification.
Travelled from Christchurch to Hamilton on 11.2L/100KM. The car has averaged 14.2L/100KM since I bought the car in October 2008. This is fantastic fuel economy for a car with this ability.
I would love to say more but I have run out of room! Please call for more info.
Needs passenger side front and rear window lift mechanism ($150 each) and cruise control motor replaced ($150) and cupholders ($50) hence the low price. I haven't fixed them because I never used them.
Also - Car is in Morrinsville, Waikato. I live in Christchurch but parents thought they'd like it. Then they thought it was too big - after I'd driven from Christchurch to Morrinsville, swapped cars with their 95 Nissan Pulsar 1.5L Auto and painfully drove it back to Christchurch.

Unfortunately, I can't have my cake and eat it too. I will buy another car but it will be something boring, just because we need to be saving some pennies at the moment.
The 4.4L V8 saloon just doesn't make sense for me anymore. I was the only one ever in it, and was using it mainly to drive to work. When that drive was 100KM a day it made loads of sense, now that it's only 13KM it makes a lot less sense.

Sorry to dissapoint you buddy, but that is a 4 litre, not a 4.4.
4 litre has the front tappett covor bolts 3 in a straight row, 4.4 has the inner two about 40 to 50mm ahead of the outer one to house the inlet cam vanos (varible timing unit). 210kw versus 235kw & heaps more torque on the vanos 4.4.
Honest mistake im sure, but stink if someone marches it back a week after buying it for mis representation, although you do say its a 210kw one.

All the 540's I've seen and sold of that year have been the 4.4l, and even a quick search on trademe reveals plenty more described as 4.4l's. I checked one of our 2001 X5's and the engine is as you describe it, maybe the earlier ones were of a different design.

Stick to your bikes mate and you should be fine.
The engine in this is the M62B44. The '44' has some importance. They are often misrecorded as being 4L or even 5.4L.
The engine you claim has HEAPS more torque is the M62TUB44 (TU stands for Technical Update) and produces only 20Nm more than the original M62B44, which is not much considering the size of the vehicle. However, after doing my RESEARCH BEFORE BUYING THE CAR, I determined I wasn't interested in the TU engine because the VANOS system is prone to failure every 60,000KM, therefore, the TU engine would be unlikely to be providing the extra torque quoted from factory.
The 4.0L engine you refer to is M60B40 (again note the 40) from the previous generation (E34) 540i.Alternatively, perhaps you have gotten yourself confused by looking at wikipedia and misread the N62B40 which is in the newer 5 series which produces 303HP or nearly 235KW (223KW actually, but seeing as you were out by 10% on the engine capacity, I figure being out by 5% on power should be regarded as an improvement).
On a separate note I would be very interested to see where you get the figure for 235KW if you are not referring to the other 2 above engines, as there is no horsepower increase between the Non-VANOS and VANOS engines except for where peak power occurs.
There is an old saying:
A wise man lets people think they are foolish, an idiot opens his mouth and proves it. I'll let you decide to which you belong.

well then I concede, it's from the internet so it must be true! I would have thought the official documentation would have been correct, but some guy on the internet must be a more reliable source.
Though my comment was made somewhat tongue in cheek, there was certainly an element (maybe a major portion) of annoyance. This is due to the fact that you posted information about the car which was incorrect - whether due to a lack of research or being misinformed - which whether intentional or not, gave the impression that I didn't know my own car.
To then take the information I have given and still maintain that you were correct is just ignorant. If you do decide that you could do with some further information on the matter, let me know. I will happily forward you some information so that you can increase your already boundless knowledge of the subject.
Easier still just look at the ownership papers :sunny:

Same, sold a few of them now, drove an 840i coupe for a while, looked at plenty for sale, all had the same looking engine (3 bolts across the rocker cover) and all were 4.4l. However the 4.4l under the hood of our X5 looks the way that sidecar describes, leading me to believe there is the first gen 4.4 and (obviously) a second gen 4.4.

Much like the 1998 BMW 735i I have been told.
