View Full Version : Rusty Nuts 1000 miler - Are you on the ride?

This campaign is to help us tell the story of this ride, the story of the Rusty Nuts and the stories of the diverse group of bikers as they travel through some of the most stunning landscapes New Zealand has to offer.

It's the 25th Grand Challenge and are you on the ride?
Some of the crazy's are doing The Long Weekend - that's a 900km day on Friday plus the 1600km on the Saturday / Sunday!

Like back in 2006 are are filming again! and the DVD will be available for sale. But this time we are trying to get lots more footage. This means more cameras (including Go-Pro HD's on some bikes) more people and, yes, more $'s.

If you contribute enough you can pre-buy your DVD and have the warm fuzzy that you helped make the DVD that much better...
http://www.indiegogo.com/RNMCGC2011?a=68809&i=addr

Whilst you are there, we would greatly appreciate it if you could forward a link to our campaign to the various social media or any production industry contacts you may have - one of these people will be the key to helping us succeed!

You can check out the previews here: http://www.youtube.com/user/NITROfilmNZ

Many Thanks
James

So what will your weapon of choice be this year?
I trust it will be something even more insane than the 990?

...and, if new, be well and truly run in by the time you get to the start line! Possibly even on your second rear tire...

My current steed. Katie the 990 was traded in on a 2010 R1200GSA, I'll see your puny fuel tank and raise it to 33L rated, but more like 35-36L when you stuff it in... oh, and 8 forward facing lights, but I only use up to 6 when on the move :D

Just need to get it in my hands tho, after my USA trip. :wait:

That's a pity. I'm hoping to possibly have a new bike to try it on.

900 + 1600 to mark the 25th anniversay for me and I still felt pretty good after 1300Km yesterday.....which really pissed me off since I was supposed to complete just short of 1500Km. (blog refers.. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/entry.php/2304-Thanks-Mr-Avon!...and-I-bid-thee-farewell-Adieu-…and-I-wave-with-a-Big-Finger!! )

Not Biting! Not Biting!!
Oh buggerit! ... my puny 1.5l tank has been round the world 3 times in the last three years (40,000/yr). Whilst I leave my Beemer (aka rubber cow) in the garage with her 30l tank ;)

Is it possible anyone could forward the schedule/map/rules or whatever I may need to think about joining in?

Map is only released the day before, on site at Turangi.

This (http://rustynuts.org.nz/default.aspx?PageID=41) gives you an entry form format, along with some rules. If you search Grand Challenge on KB, you'll find write ups of past events, experiences etc.

Ahhhh I seeeeeee
Thanks for that, not too sure how I'd go though. I went from Napier to Taihape and back and felt pretty sore, and that was just 300k's. Bloody Sport bikes!
I'll do some more reading and might just turn up on the day.

Cheers

You'll need to register, no turning up on the day. Places are also limited, and usually the anniversary events are well subscribed. There are bike inspections prior to ride, and as the Rusty's put it "The bike has to be capable in our opinion of starting the ride when it has finished it". Steering head bearings are checked, to give you an idea of the thorough checkover the bikes get.

No worries, I'll check out registration for open spots.
Any tips for a first timer doing the run alone?
I have a good tool kit and the bike should be reliable enough, but I'm more worried about fuel....I can only get around 200k's to a tank.

mmm, somewhere there was a thread asking for advice for a previous one, can't find it now however.

200km should be ok, the rustys do intend for smaller bikes (smaller fuel tanks more importantly I guess) to be able to do it. Once you find out the specified route, planning is up to you. Some carry additional fuel, others might do slight detours to get gas, naturally you have to plan to stop more often, and pay special attention to fuel availability at night. Some know all the roads and look at the map and say uh-huh, others (myself included) put several hours into planning distances, stops etc.

Often in Grand Challenges, you end up riding with someone, there's about 80-120 on a specified route, and you usually find someone your pace, doing your stops etc. Stay warm, eat and drink regularly, even if you don't feel like it, as your body needs the energy.

Being able to ride at night is uh... necessary, as you cannot finish before nightfall. No point in blasting out the gates either, others have, then found themselves knackered as night falls. The key to finishing easily is knowing your pace, keeping stops to a minimum (as that really kills the time) and simply riding at a consistent pace. Try not to get up at 6am Saturday morning, otherwise the day is half over by the time you start the GC.

Like Gremlin says - but don't try following him he is the machine and his bike is alive.
Last time I tried to follow him I thought I was doing OK until I needed fuel and my clutch cable spontaneously combusted!
I have heard it said he can absorb petrol whilst riding past a petrol station at 140kph, but those are unconfirmed reports. I think that may be an exaggeration, he may need to slow down to about 109kph...

Hey,
Was just wondering, out if those on the ride will any of you be able to keep enough charge in your phone to transmit Google latitude location?
If you can then the film crew would like to follow a selection of riders.

Coverage would be an issue, unless the phone is happy using it's GPS. I've had mixed results with latitude, also erroring when I leave it running...

The 1000 mile runs are as much mental ... as they are phyisical ... Dont think too far ahead, it does your head in ...

Spare little thought for anything that is more than a hundred metres in front of you .... with the only exception being ... where you get your next tank of gas ...

A 5 litre or (even better) 10 litre fuel container is good insurance ... (they've saved my bacon a few times)

A headlight bulb upgrade (with relays if required) is strongly suggested ... On long night runs ... it takes longer for the brain to tell you what it has decided it sees, if you are tired ...

This is all awesome advise i will have to take with me .......next year
But thanks for the info, It's a little too short notice for so many tanks of gas + entry.
Wish I hadda seen this earlier

Looking like I might have to bail on the Friday 900km portion.

Boss is out of country, and typically, everything has fallen apart, servers are playing up, computers blowing up... can't risk being out of Auckland for a day and a half (thurs arvo and Friday). Safer to leave Friday night, boss only back early on Monday :bye:

If you checkout the NitroFilmNZ channel in the morning I have done a low light compare for the go-pro on all the resolutions. It looks like knocking it down to 720p will improve the low light shots.
Will see what Tim recommends ...

Mount is in 5mm Ally - so not a lot of flex in it...amazing how much vibration and jiggling about the GoPro takes out - you wouldn't know I was on gravel in some of my vids aboard the Strom...

Is that because you skipped the bit in the easy cape... I see you cutting off the corner!
Mind you with the roads (or lack of them) in that area I think I might have done the same...

And suppose you will come up with a good explanation as to what happened to the contents of this bottle?
