View Full Version : I ran over a windshield washer's foot?

So I'm in Paraparamu, heading back to Wellington, at around 9:45 pm, it's dark and there are spots of rain. Stop at the lights. Red.
Out of the dark someone runs at the car - smoosh! A bit of a shock, but then I see he's "washing" the windows. Sounds like the handle of his brush is banging the car.
I check my mirror - no one for miles. So I put the car in reverse and get it away from him.
He backs off, and I move back to the lights. He bangs the passenger window with his brush, then comes around to the drivers side. He's yelling "you ran over my foot!" and "open your window!" and "I'll smash your glasses!".
Well, he's got two or three mates sitting at the corner, and I'm at a serious disadvantage getting out of the car, or sitting in it with the window open, and my daughter is with me, so I basically ignore him. He's yelling. I yell a bit back. Light goes green, I drive off, he yells "pussy!" and is left in the rain.
Feel free to post a "cool story, bro" picture, but my question is: is there any issue with my reversing at the lights? Frankly I'm not sure I even believe I ran over his foot. He certainly didn't seem injured, in any case. I think it may have been part of his regular "act" when someone tries to get their car away from him, to scam more dollars or something.
Anyway, I want to report this to the cops tommorrow, arses like that need to be off our streets and I read lately that some in Porirua have been arrested and fined for being public nuisances. Just wondering which way this would go, if anywhere. Told my wife about it, and she was more concerned about the window washer. Apparently I'm the bad guy, for endangering his life or something.
(And geez, don't you always see the typo in the title just after you hit submit?)

If there's a chance that you've injured someone, you must report it to the police without delay. I doubt there would be any repercusions for you.
If you think you're the bad guy, I once reversed into a biker at traffic lights - on purpose. I stop at the lights, the biker rolled up and bumped againt the rear of my car. The next set of lights, same again - I tooted the horn, he ignored me. Third set of lights, bump. I slammed into reverse and shoved him back a foot or so - his screams of rage and fear were almost human...:innocent:

Window washing is now illegal I believe (not sure if it's a council bylaw or regular law), plus he could be considered to be jaywalking. To be safe, I would probably agree with mentioning to police (just drop into a station, say what you've said here, bad weather, outnumbered, with daughter etc), otherwise it could turn nasty...
Police may say don't worry about it, if so, then cool, at least you have checked.

I gave one a fright at Mill st in the Tron once. Felt a bit bad afterwards but oh well. If you had rolled over his foot there is no way in hell he would have still been standing. I've had a Toyota corrolla roll over the end of my steel cap boots before. No way I'd ever want to find out what it's like without 'em.

Its part of his "act" plus he had his mates to act up to.
There was a window washer im my area doing the same scam if the driver moved, I spotted the prick at our local mall bothering women for money with the "my girlfriend is pregnant and I need the taxi money to get her to the doctor" sob story.

Cheers, thanks for the confirmation.
Thanks to all others above, too. Even you, mashman (thought I'd fixed that typo before I'd seen your post...).
I'll report today (I'll try by phone first) so the local cops know this dropkick needs watching.

Ya girl!
Had my toes run over (VW) while wearing jandals, and when I yelped (fright more than pain), my workmate stomped on the brake and parked on my foot.
Also thrown my foot (steelcaps) under the front tyre of a runaway 740i BMW. It ran straight over my foot and continued its short journey, until it t-boned a Mitsi Lancer. No damage to my foot or the BMW though:D

Why did you back up?
Just sit there, let them wash your window (for free) and when they're done, look the other way because you're not interested in connecting with the losers of this world.:corn:

Sod that, most of the time the brush is dirtier than your windscreen.
I hope you did run over his foot and that it's a compound fracture that leads to gangrene and aids.

Didn't read my whole post, did you? (lazy bugger!)

Happened to walk past Wellington police station this morning so reported in.
They didn't seem too sure what to do, but gave me a form to fill out. Apparently in case the guy reports it so they have my side of the story.
Officer in Wellington rang Paraparaumu station and they say they haven't had other complaints - hard to believe I was the first person hassled by these people.
Turns out the Wellington arrests of windshield washers is due to the WCC enacting a bylaw that makes it illegal. It's not a nation-wide thing; so it's not specifically illegal in Paraparaumu.

Sure sounds like a scam to me too. There may well have been other people harrassed by this person but either too embarrassed or worried to report it to the police. (Or just couldn't give a rats arse).
At least you've given your side in advance, as opposed to in defence against his complaint if he lays one.

Some of these shits have already been ticketed for window washing at Kapiti Rd. I wouldn't let the pricks anywhere near my cars as their brushes are usually shit and they often use dish washing liquid as a soap which contains salt and also calmly removes a lot of polishes and waxes.

I do laugh at the fact that people think they are providing a service. My wipers have a little squirter that helps clean my windows.
You have been replaced hobo's.
