Todays racers, though highly skilled, seem to lack the character of the riders from days of old.Men like Mick Doohan who rode with a leg so busted up they had to fit a thumb operated rear brake.....or..Rollie Free who would ride anything except a Harley and was quick with his fists if a Harley rider looked at him sideways.....or..Carl Foggerty with his thousand yard stare....Who would put on your list of Hard Bastards?

I have a vid of him from the Lucky Strike Promo film that shows him weekend after the Laguna GP where he fell and dislocated his hip and rebroke one of his wrists. There is a scene that shows him getting ready for a race and the guys are fitting his gloves for him as he has a cast on each wrist/arm. He went out and won the race. I believe it was at Donnington if memory servs me right

On that I would probably agree with you, but we were not talking about talent here, we were talking about being hard. My point was that there weren't many guys then or now who were prepared to ride with the injuries he had. Especially with both arms in a cast. Whether he only won one championship or 10 it did not really matter. It was what he was prepared to do to win.

Then he proceeded to clip an inside tyre wall with his fucked hand. He kept racing though.

Willytheekid put up a great arguement for Hailwood but then another arguement would be MV had no real competition back then.(his Isle Of Man record speaks otherwise tho so no arguement from me there)
Schwantz was the man but the Suzuki was a dog at most tracks and only he could ride it at 10/10ths (sound familiar)
Another thing to take into account re. era's are what the bikes were like to ride.
Todays 800's must be complete pussycats to ride compared to the 500 screamers.
Another is the race circuits themselves...back in the day doing 150+mph beside barriers and over cobblestones/railway crossings were accepted.
So who's the hardest? taking all the above into account...Kenny Roberts Snr.The man won a championship with a broken back.

To be honest mate...any cunt that gets to that level of racing is a hard bastard. They've all had literally hundreds of biffs to get that far, and every single one of them would hurt. Lorenzo racing with both ankles broken a couple of years ago? De Puniet coming back from a badly broken leg in 28days? Rossi the same thing? Bautista snapping the top of his femur off? Stoner rode most of '09' I think it was with a scaphoid that was still broken...the list goes on and on.

You cant directly compare the ages because nothing is the same, so you really cant say one is harder than the other...
I think its the media that has us thinking that the motogp paddock is like a bitchy girly high school (which is probably is). I'm sure everything that happens now, happened then. They just didn't have the media coverage that they do now.
Dorna also restricts the riders in what they say and do a hell of a lot more than they used to

Pretty much imposssible to compare era's, but human nature is human nature and there are always folks around who will push the limits. The fact is today you simply aren't allowed to do what they did in the past. I have no doubt that if a championship was on the line, last race of the season, most of the current crop would do exactly what they did back in the day.
But the hard bastards for me are the guys from sort of post-war through to the early 70's who raced on by now pretty fast bikes at places like original Nurburgring, Spa etc for virtually nothing, lucky even to get a pathetic appearance fee, living in the back of a van with the bike they maintained themselves. Forget "movie stars" like Sheene and co who swanned about in their Roll's Royce, or flew to meetings, and had money and women by the bucket load. Nup, it's the poor bastards who made up the rest of the grid, suffered the same injuries, put up with a lot more hardship, and with no Count Agusta or factory support in the backround that were tough as teak.

Hahaha...not likely. I dared the fucker to swim across Breakfast Creek one night for $20.00 when he'd run out of money. It was low tide. He stripped down to his gruts and strutted down the concrete embankment. When he hit the high tide slime, he went arse over kite and slid on his arse all the way down the bank into the creek.
The barnicles and sharp concrete cut fuck out of his back, hands and arse cheeks. When he got to the other side, it was so slippery, the fucker couldn't get up the bank, and he shredded his feet and hands some more trying. By the time we snapped a branch off a nearby tree to pull him out, we had quite an audience.
He was covered in stinky river slime, and bleeding all over quite badly. We all gave him our $20.00 notes each, and smuggled him into a nearby bar to get cleaned up. He came out ten minutes later, but had already bled through his white shirt real bad!
I lent him my long sleeved black tee shirt, and when he came out after changing into that, we all demanded a beer asit was now well past his shout. He did the famous 'money haka'. He then looked really worried. When asked why...it's because he'd flushed his blood soaked shirt down the loo. With the $80.00 still in the pocket.

These comparing riders from diff era's are always interesting, but ultimately futile.
That makes me a genuine wuss! :bye:

...yeah Barry Sheene must have been a pussy for being flash...if you disregard, 5 broken toes, 3 broken ankles, 3 broken legs, 1 broken femur, 1 broken heel, 12 broken vertebrae, 9 broken ribs, 1 split kidney, 7 broken collarbones, 1 broken arm, 5 broken wrists, 4 metacarpal breaks, 4 broken knuckles, 4 broken fingers and an amputated finger...and im not sure if that is the whole tally...

Dunno, too early to judge. Some people fall off quite a bit adjusting to the motogp bikes and then seem fine. Some people just fall off a lot and get sacked. He seems to have his balls chopped off a bit as of late. I dare say DORNA will learn what makes good racing about the time they've totally fucked it.
And now they have their fingers in the world super bike pie too.

Sounds like an advanced riding course wouldn't have gone amiss.
