NZMS opens in Christchurch – Employment opportunity

We (New Zealand Micrographic Services) are delighted to announce that we will be establishing a Digitisation Centre in Christchurch from November 2011. It will be located in Sydenham (premises vacated by our sister company Desktop Imaging Ltd who is re-locating to Harewood to Recall’s records storage facility).

Our aim is to staff this facility with a Christchurch resident/s who will be trained to use our specialist heritage-focused equipment and most importantly in our handling practices.

As we do in Wellington, we want to offer a wide range of scanning services in Christchurch. We are planning to have our Christchurch facility outfitted so we can scan:


photos,
reference-prints,
manuscripts,
albums,
diaries,
ledgers and books,
large format maps and plans (up to A2);

AND we will provide equipment for a microform viewing/scanning facility together with basic copying services.

From there we can support OCR (converting images to editable text); and depending on demand we can supplement with additional scanners from Wellington, for example a straight path belt-feed scanner.

We do not intend to relocate our large Cruse CS185 scanner due to it’s size – items requiring this scanner will still need to be sent to HMIF located in the Archives NZ building in Wellington.

To be honest, we've discussed it Stephen but it's not really our core work. NZMS started 21 years ago principally doing microfilming work, particularly working on the microfilming of New Zealand's newspapers, and then specialising on heritage materials (old stuff) for libraries, galleries and museums. NZMS have a unique focus on preserving rare, fragile and oversize items through digitisation and microfilming. We have been working with libraries, archives, museums and individuals since 1990, delivering imaging solutions that meet their high expectations for handling, duty of care and image quality.

About ten years or so ago, we moved to digitisation. I started with the company in 2002, and was responsible for the setup of the Heritage Materials Imaging Facility, and after much research HMIF was established in 2003 in the National Library building, in conjunction with the NZETC of the Victoria University of Wellington. In August 2009 we moved to the National Archives of New Zealand. The Cruse scanner fills a void in the digitising services available in New Zealand through its ability to scan large format or bound material to a high resolution without having to make contact with the original. While today's digital camera backs are capable of capturing large amounts of image data, as an integrated system the Cruse scanner offers many significant advantages - too many to go into here but suffice to say it's the equivalent of a 150MP digital camera.

We have many other specialist digitisation equipment - it's not just a photocopying setup.

I run the eprojects part of the business - I specialise in what comes after digitisation - the actual extraction of data from the images and conversion to text, searchable PDFs, databases, spreadsheets and many XML formats.
