My gf wants a motorbike cos her scooter doesn't go fast enough (I told her it was gay when she got it) so we've been looking at small 125ish cc bikes. We looked at this one (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=414209961) today. I don't really know that much about 2 strokes, what kind of things should I know about them before buying one?

what a load a crap... as above I had one pushing way more grunt than it was ment to (ported, plained, spanny, TZR carb) and no issues, many others being raced to, strong as strong gets, AND go for ever.

100 percent user servicable unless you are a complete mongoloid. Check it out. Only then will you know if you are happy enough with the condition for the dollars.

As has been said, $300 bucks is what I pay for a tyre.

Cheers for the heads up though, if you don't want it I will pick it up for the nephew down there at uni next year.

Looks good for 266,000k. I'd get it for that number on the clock alone if it was in Welly.

Not alot, put oil and fuel in it, otherwise its like any other bike.

Get a manual for it, Haynes do one.

I'd buy it if I was allowed any more bikes. Shit, I'm considering selling a couple and getting a road H or MB.

Yeah but you could bore everyone senseless about it's millage and how back in the old days of the 80's biking was real biking, park it outside WCC during harley demo days and compare build quality after 100,000 etc.

Oh oh oh AND leave clouds of two stroke smoke up Kent tce

That got a laugh out of me. As much as I wouldn't mind having it I am only thinking about the nephew next year.

Hmm, the year after that though...

Check it well!!!.

I don't believe the mileage. On old bikes 3 hundie could grow quickly with things like clutches, headstock bearings, et al.

Can just see us all on 80's hacks. Catch up at Wima Sun. Will have Dog for pillion, asuming his new carbon crash helmet is ready, so hard to miss.

Looking forward to it. Does your 'partner' know that you refer to him as a dog?

Not sure but he knows he's not a Cat or a Rabbit and I'm a bloody wierd human to tolerate just for the occasional venison sausage. Oh and when the Dog Box goes on the bike he'd better get ready for an adventure.

Its 6 volt :shit:

Eat lots of carrots.

Get the rider to start to make sure there are no problems, it being hard or just to difficult could kill the interest.

Wikipedia is full of shit. Those engines will spin to 14,000rpm and live forever at 11,000rpm. Genuine Honda parts are the "go". When you finally wear out the last oversize piston slap a Yamaha KT100 kart piston in it and then you have another 20 oversizes. I've been thrashing bikes with these engines including a commuter MB100 for years.
A good scooter will dust it good and proper though and for ease of use in traffic a scooter will win. I now have a Yamaha Cygnus 125cc, actually 165cc now, and I like the scooter better in traffic.

I took it down the road and back, it has plenty of oomph for such a tiny bike, definitely better than my friend's old cg125. It has an exhaust leak where the muffler joins the header/other pipe bit, but surely there's some kinda gap filler for that, the gf loves it.

I think you will find hes generlising, however the MB/H100 can be made to go very fast, heres mine as mentioned earler in the thread...

It has an exhaust leak where the muffler joins the header/other pipe bit, but surely there's some kinda gap filler for that Sort it mate... ecno Honda should be able to help with a gasget, cos a exhaust leak means it will suck air in and cause a very lean fuell mix, that means BOOM.

do you know how a stroker works... see here, note the fuel mix passing over the piston and into the spanny... any air leak will be sucked back into the engine with the fuell mix, leaning it out.
