After someone pushed my bike over in the middle of the night, I didn't start my bike for about 10 days whilst awaiting a part. When I came to start it, it would turn over but not catch, with the occasional loud back-fire. Is it flooded and if so, should I leave it for a while before trying again? I'll need to jumpstart it as my battery is now flat
Your help is once again very much appreciated for a n00b like myself.
Cheers.

Backfiring tends to indicate the gas has fouled a sparkplug. Leave it a while & jumpstart may clear it if you are lucky. Or pushstart with a friend pushing.

take the plugs out, check and clean them. Make sure the carbs aren't flooded too (take the airbox off and have a peek/sniff), it you can find another bike/small car to jump start the bike from, that'll help you a bit.. Push starting might not give you enough spark/drive to start from really cold..

Turn the fuel off, drain the carbs, pull the plugs and turn over on full throttle...clean and refit plugs, turn taps on and run fuel through bowls, shut fuel drains and start.

check your oil window, is it a funny'ish color? (i.e not normal?) otherwise do as above..
I've had and encountered some strange internal damages from crashes.. :nono:
they don't have oil windows - dipstick

if you have tried turning the motor over a few times, the fuel should have been dumped after 3 or 4 goes, unless your plugs are really shot. if the previous ideas don't work, check your fuel feed pipe, if the bike was pushed on its left side, sediment and crap from the tank may be blocking the fuel feed tap inside the tank.

Motus onto it - just drain the carbs (don't have to worry about the fuel tap - theres a pump which stops lots o petrol pouring out). Then with the headlights off, and choke off, kill switch to run, hit the starter and give it a little throttle. Works very well with the MC19.

My boss managed to push start it after a couple of goes. Run rough for a little while, then I took it for a 60km ride to charge the battery again. Lost a bit of oomph above 10,000 rpm which I assume is bad/fouled plugs.
I'll follow the advice and pull the plugs and check for fouling and gaps.
Much appreciated ya'll :grouphug:

I found mine backfired a lot on 96. Switched to 91 and it runs awesomely. Just remember to redline it every now and then.

only other thing i could add that possibly is that those CBR's are prone to flooding themselves with gas. end up pooling in the exhaust, its a kinda mechanic/ person who knows what their doing thing to fix.
what condition is you gas tank in?? if rusty, flakes of rust can jam stuff open and result in the above.
and a tip that i use to do back in the day was to run it on 91 in the winter and 96 in the summer. it always seemed to start better on 91 in the colder months.
good luck. :ride:

Juding by your avatar, you've got an MC17 - twin front disks, no fuel pump, rear wheel mudguard (theres lots more, but not that obvious).

yeh twin discs - a real bitch when i had to replace both for last warrant -,
dont need a fuel pump on a 250
the suction effect woorks best by having engine drag it in at 18500rpm
an used to say hurricane but hurricanes are gay so i took that off,
(by crashing it)
was quoted up to 450 for a second hand starter motor that might just give out in a month so i havnt done anything about mine
