If you can find some Alpinestar Tech 3s at a good price, buy them. Great boot, very comfortable, last for ages... annoyingly so, cos I want new boots but my Tech 3s won't wear out.

I recently purcharsed a new pair of Thor's for just over $200. If walking like Oscar Pretorius is an indication of protection, then they fit the bill. No feeling from the knees down.

Can't comment on the quality of those boots, but I've used other Fly gear before and it's generally been pretty good... and at that price, very hard to ignore...

unless you have very skinny legs dont get the no fear ones.I swapped my No Fear Trophees for 6 weeks in a moon boot. Not happy with the protection they offered, and overall they started coming apart with only normal use.

There's a great old saying. You can have cheap, or good, but not both.

Might be true if you're paying RRP for "this season's" gear, but anyone who pays full retail for the latest gear either has so much money they don't care (bastard) or is making up for not being able to ride by looking good instead (in the carpark at least... see you out on the trails buddy).

Being in the bike industry for well over 20 years has also taught me this...

they are a bit different to ride in at first, but after a while you get used to them and you ever wonder how you rode with out them, you can use tanners oil (get it from a hose equipment place) to soften up the leather but most of the books have that much protection in the ankle that it does not help much, walking around in them for a few hours does help as well

Well felt like a twat riding home in them on the road bike. Think they are made for a much more uprite bike.
But great boots. Just got to get used to em.

if you want to feel real awkward try driving a car in them, only tried that once on a quick run back to the shop to get parts

Yes, go riding lots!
Some boots take longer than others to break in, but just do a few squats when ever you first put them on. That helps break in the ankle part of the boot, which is what you need for gear changing. Also helps with warming up the leg muscles ready for all the standing up you'll be doing on the bike shortly afterwards...

when I first rode the bike i wondered why the brake and gear lever were so high. I moved them down. Now i have to move them back up. Couldnt reach them with the boots on.

Good to hear you got some boots sorted. From experience dont try and soften them up tom uch as the stifness is part of what protects you, especially around the ankle area. I made the mistake of getting some cheap nasty boots and ended up breaking my leg in 3 places, I was quickly shown how my boots were so flopy around the ankle area and that protection was minimal. Have gone Alpinestars ever since, strong and last for years. Another trick I learnt is after you have washed your boots lie them on their sides, aparently if you leave them standing upright the weight causes them to start bending over and eventualy this weakens the area around your ankle.

If anybody is still after bargain boots - I got a pair of AXO Prime's at Cycletreads last weekend - RRP $599, paid $220 :-) they had quite a few in stock....
