ok, ol' Scummy lashed out and bought a new helmet - the 1st in 20+ years!
It's a HJC IS-16, in matte black with tribal graphix of course.
Good points:
The built in but externally adjustable sun-visor
The 'seat-belt' style buckle/catch
The venting system
The fabric under-chin draught-stopper
The positive locking of the visor in the postion I want
The lock to keep it locked down at speed:shutup::innocent:
The fact that it's black
Bad points:
It's a full-face
It cost many kiwi pesos - more than THIS guy has ever spent on a helmet. (Hey, I only have a $4:85 head!).

Generally only heard good things about HJC's Scummy. Never worn one myself, not poser'ish enough for me.

I recently bough an HJC FG15. best helmet I ever bought, zero complaints. Love it.

Yeah they are a good "affordable" helmet SD. One of the bestestest things about that model is the "Silver Cool" which does wick away moisture etc leaving thee feeling far better on a hotter day.
Have sold plenty many and have yet to hear one complaint.
Gone are the days that HJC only produce 'entry level' helmets.
Oh and the supplier is good!

I used to think that about my FG15 until I tried a HJC RPHA they're a step up again
I've trashed a couple of HJC helmets with zero head injuries so they've worked for me

I am one of those who still associates HJC with cheap and cheerful entry level helmets. I bought one about six years ago. I have tried on once, but not ever worn it, as I got a flip up Nolan for my birthday.
I'm sure the new models are as good as any, or they wouldn't still be in business

I got one similar to Tims, Same model just different design,
its the most expensive helmet I have ever owned,
Iv had it for maybe a month now, and its a perfect fit, some of my other helmets are always in between,
this is my second HJC

Yep, been wearing HJC helmets for many years now with no problems or complaints although none of them have ever had the ultimate test and hopefully never will. Reasonable value for money too.

HJCs are OK. I've had a couple that have worked well. Like Shoei, they're a rare manufacturer who makes helmets in XXXL size. Unlike Shoei, they make their big helmets with graphic patterns.

My current two helmets are HJC - definitely the most comfortable helmets I've worn for my head shape... I ended up with a CL-SP as my main helmet as they still have double D rings and I just feel more secure with those than clip straps.
Great value for money and the visor change system is really simple...

It is for the same reason that I have had to resort to Trojan over Durex as my preferred condom manufacturer. The graphics.

I have had an HJC CS12N and I currently have a ZF10. Both extremely good helemts rivalling helmets from other brands costing much more. The IS16 is not one of their better helmets from memory with a lower safety score but it will still be good for what it's worth. Mine are quiet down the motorway waterproof and have taken all sorts of abuse and held together.

I have a $700 HJC RPHA, however, I wear my old $50 2nd hand CL14 most of the time. Much quieter behind the windshield, ( have a $49 head so I'm still winning)

I have a HJC CS-R1 helmet that is so incredibly comfortable, but apparently you can't get this one anymore. I am gutted because I have bought and given away so many helmets that I hated once they had been on my head for 30 minutes and over. I try to wear them for as long as I can in the shop but I think 30 minutes may be pushing it

No rattles etc - a little bit of wind-noise generally, queter than my old FFM was and no need for ear-plugs.
Quieter than my open-face helmet...:innocent:

I've had an HJC for the last 7 years. Can't find any model numbers but it has ECE R22-05. I guess that's the date of manufacture. I bought it off T/Me as a Tattoo. (That might just be the pattern.)
My only complaint is, because of my rather large proboscis, my nose presses against the top of the chin guard, making it a tad uncomfortable over 100km/h. (Controlled conditions on private roads of course!)
Has anyone else had this problem, or know of any brands that have more clearance?

Why is everybody expecting an instant perfect fit ... that lasts forever ... ???
I'm afraid that the likelyhood of ANYBODY having a perfect fit in the shop at purchase time ... and continuing to have a perfect fit ever-after ... is being a little optimistic ... Average sized heads, fit in average sized helmets ...
About a month of regular wear before any ... "give" ... in fit is noticed ... I have an AGV which needed a "trim" of the cheek padding ....
NO issues afterwards ...

I don't think it is asking too much to hope that a helmet is comfortable. If my helmet feels like it is crushing my head and is causing a lot of pain, I will be damned if I am going to wear it for how ever long it takes to squash the lining. Seems stupid to think that someone in a lot of pain can concentrate on riding safely.

I have NEVER bought a helmet that I have NOT taken for a ride ... or a walk in ... prior to purchase ...
In some cases a deposit ... or purchase price paid (refundable if helmet is returned) is required.
Never had an issue ... initially only a little discomfort ... NEVER PAIN.
Seems stupid to me, one would buy a helmet that puts them in pain ... each to their own I guess ...
A helmet is a personal item that should NOT be bought ... because you need it NOW ... Take your time or pay the price ...

Only HJC and Schuberth seem to fit properly.
The Schuberth wins hands down on quietness and peripheral vision.
The HJC wins on a double D ring chinstrap. I don't like the ratchet mechanism on the Schuie, but hey.

On my third HJC. They fit my head very well. I'm a HJC fan.
Numerous models in their range I'm using a FS15. Vented, fully removable liner for washing. Light and quiet.

I always wear the helmet around the shop for at least 10-15 minutes. I have never asked to take the helmet for a ride - it never occurred to me that you could. Next time I will ask, but I doubt the answer will be "yes"
Who the fuck would buy a helmet if they knew it would cause pain - what a stupid thing to say. The way a helmet feels in the shop has nothing to do with the way it feels after 30 or 60 minutes on the road.

mine is an HJC FG14 , I've had it for over 5 years & well over 100,000 km's. comfortable, quiet & helps keep the bugs from hitting the noggin. not too bad @ keeping the rain out either. I've never crash tested it & hope I never do :innocent:

EXTREMELY lighter than my last HJC helmet - only 3.39 lbs ....minimal head shake with this one, wind-grab is substantially less when looking sideways. Alot quieter than my last one too, although I still wear ear plugs...I just ride betterer with them.

They're a good helmet scummy, I had the FSmax model before your one & when I hit the road it did the job well, found them good in the heat or cold, only reason I didn't get another one was the size would have had to wait six + months so insurance got me a shoe, would prefer the new HJC, got mrs Shrek one at MCR about two weeks back at a good $$

ok ,ive had good helmets for awhile now and have learnt the diff between an average helmet and a top notch helmet.my reasoning is why should anyone elses brain be worth more than mine ? the best is good enough for me and why grizzle laying in hospital bed saying goooo gaaaa from a brain scrambel.money is easy to come by compared to brain recovery time.over to clever people now

I found the built-in, retractible 'sun-glasses' gizmo fairly good - and while it doesn't cover the lower 1/4 of you vision (it doesn't go fully down) it does allow you to see mirrors and guages without looking through the 'sun-glasses'.:niceone:

I don't like flip-down visors, tried one and found it distracting, I'd rather have a tint and clear visor (personal pref and all that :-) )
I do like HJC though, on my third one now, an RPS-10. I prefer it to my Arai RX7 corsair I landed on (I was wearing it, had the bike land on it the helmet with me in it, ground my head across the tarmac for a wee while). Having said that, the Arai did it's job, so can't complain there...
I think the HJC has easier to use vents, as wel as being more comfortable, quieter and lighter.
I preferred the "pull down" chin deflector of the Arai to the "chin visor" that you have to fit to the HJC.
The Arai seemed to be a bit less prone to fogging, and I'm still fighting with the latching mechanism on the HJC from time to time, I can't "crack" the visor on the HJC quite as easily as the Arai.
The liner of the HJC feels more plush than the Arai did, though that might just be a new helmet thing?
Overall, and especially considering the price difference, I'd rate the HJC ahead of the Arai in terms of comfort and usability.
I'd rather not test it's 'crashablity' after last time...

If you're an HJC fan, try a Schuberth (C3 to be precise). They seem to have the same shape, but better peripheral vision and much much quieter. No buffeting when looking over your shoulder changing lanes. Very quiet. I'm converted.
