View Full Version : Trashie's bucket build

White trash
17th October 2011, 16:09
Well, after years and years of refusing all offers to have a go on a bucket, I finally was worn down and folded like a paper napkin.

Thanks to the generosity of Fish, made my debut a few weeks ago on his ZXR chassis at the "Endurance" event at Kaitoke. And, confirming my worst fears, I was fucking hooked. Just what I friggen needed, more projects.

So here's my bucket build thread as I cobble together something of my own to ride.

I was lucky enough to aquire a complete FZR250 3LN which will donate its bones to the project. I'm hoping the money raised from selling bits off it will cover the costs of some of the bits and pieces I need. Biggest issue is getting a motor so if anyone has anything spare at a reasonable price, please let me know.

Couple of images of the bike as we (me and 9 year old daughter) pull it to bits. 12 year old daughter isn't too interested in working on it but looking forward to riding it.

Forgive my lack of knowledge here, but is bucket racing for smaller cc bikes, up to 150cc? If so, didn't Suzuki and Kawasaki make a couple af great little watercooled two-stroke sports 125's and are there any racing in the class? The most popular seems to be the FXR150 four-stroke.

Water cooled two stroke are restricted to 100cc, Air cooled two stroke 125cc, four stroke 150cc

100cc four stroke can be turboed

That's a shame, as the water-cooled 125's went really well and were raved over when they were released. Is there a class for them, or any interest in racing them? There are a few 125's that would make for good racing, including the Aprillia.

However they are better of being in a bin, because its a AX100 engine.

Nah seriously they are fucken bad. Good luck finding a engine :).

GT125's have potential, but i know you well enough that you have a fuck load of projects like me, so you'll probably never get around to tuning it, so try getting a gl145 or fxr/loncin.

Damm good chassis the 3LN, can fit nearly anything into it and the wheels are good as is for 125 slicks too, handle bars and foot pegs are in the right place also.

248827 248826

Speedpro, Chambers and I use them here at Mt Welly, do you have an engine preference?

I use one of these 08-09 GSXR600 rear shocks with the original FXR spring. $27 USD http://www.ebay.com/itm/08-09-Suzuki-GSXR-600-750-Rear-Shock-Suspension-/230684990738?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item35b5e59d12

I got mine near new of Ebay for not much $$$, as well as being all adjustable they jack the back up a bit for more weight on the front, other year GSXR600 shocks are a bit longer and lift the back of the FXR to much.

Right, after some advice.

I'm thinking I'll go the boring, but reliable, diesel route for a powerplant. After riding Fishies bike and seeing how quick he can get along with it, and knowing my own mechanical spasticity regarding tuning, it's the safest bet.

So, ideally I want an FXR150 motor. But they're fucken hens teeth (unless someone has one they'll sell of course?). I've trawled through Tardme loonking for a Loncin, vertical motor like Fish's one, but no luck there either.

So now I'm thinking maybe a GL145? Much as I hate to look for Honda power, it seems a reliable little bugger that has almost acceptable performance.

Anyone know of any issues or pitfalls regarding these?

Why don't you hack up the 3LN engine into a 2 cylinder give it a bore out and volia.
DOHC 16 valve 150cc twin Speedpro started to do one earlier for a 100cc super or turbo project.
Lining up the mounts should be easy at least.I seem to remember seeing a story of one going to
300cc (I guess with sleeves) on the net with if I recall correct a 400 head with 600 valves so breathing shouldn't be an issue.
all the machining needed might be, but it would be an interesting if not inexpensive build.

Have a chat to him too, he has been racing with his TF for a while now and he knows how to ride it well (2011 NI champ). The TF and the TS are supposed to be very similar/the same.
