completely agree Crash, when speed exceed's ability, the result is almost always a crash....damn lucky no innocents were involved

Never nice to see a fellow rider hurt tho (even if by their own actions)...hope your Ok Westy, you sounded like you were in ALOT of pain in that vid.
.........but at least you were big enough to admit your mistakes in the vid...and then share it!

-Take it to the track for speed mate...the road is dangerous enough at legal speeds.

Stay safe Westy & I truly hope your all healed up, feeling better & the bike is repairable :niceone:

yeah, took it too fast and fixated.. lesson learnt the hard way.
Actually (and it's a guess, since I wasn't there) your speed was probably Ok (quick, but in terms of ok to make it around the corner).

Your lines however... well, were basically non-existent, constantly on the other side of the road, for really, no reason. It's not a dig, see it as education. The idea of going out there is to enjoy the corners, not make them all straight

Entering that particular corner, you were much too close to the centre line (as a result of trying to cut corners) which made that corner tighter than it needed to be. If you had been further to the left, and using a late apex, it would have been safer (for you and other vehicles) and you would have been far more likely to make it around the corner. As you say, fixating didn't help either.

Honestly, you're riding at speeds well in excess of your skill, ergo, something goes wrong, and you can't correct it, hence why you always ride with plenty in reserve to handle the "what if" moments.

Spend more time learning to ride (skills development etc) and less time trying to look and go fast. Speed will come naturally, as your skills progress.

Watching the vid and reading these comments does make me reasses my own riding ability, and I will still never admit that after 30 odd years of riding I am a good, safe and competent rider. We learn every single day we take our bikes out on the road. Some of those lessons are easy, and some have a happy ending whether due to our skill or simply luck. yet others end up not so lucky or with a good ending.
I take off my hat to any person who has the guts to admit that they are still learning and have acknowledged their mistakes and learned something from them. Only then our roads will become safer.

I too am glad you've learned the most important lesson there is in motorcycling - respect the motorsickle or it will hurt you. It's all shit's and giggles until you hit something stationary and the physical damage can stay with you forever.

Seriously though dude, you need to be told;

Your riding was nothing short of fucking abysmal. Apart from trying to get your knee down on a roundabout in the rain it doesn't look like you've mastered the lean at all.

Please do us all a favour and if & when you get back on a bike don't go posting videos of your riding on the interweb again. The references to ACC in this thread aren't coming from a perspective with concern for your rehabilitation.

I hope you fully recover and get back on your bike. On a track.

Gremlin is bang on the money. But I see from your comments that you already know you fucked up
From watching your clip, the speed is hardly the issue in that corner, it was the line and the target fixation. Even with your poor line, you (IMO) had plenty of room to adjust and make it through the corner. However, experience is the only way of ensuring that if you find you have committed to a corner wrong, you adjust rather than freak out. We've all been there, we've all been new to riding and had moments where the brain just refuses to think clearly, we freak out and do what we shouldn't, in your case, stand the bike up by grabbing a handful of brakes instead of turning the bike into the corner.
How fast do you think you went into that corner?

Absolutely, I am with you here. Plenty of the high and mighty in here who have *never* made a mistake. Only time I have crashed in the last 4 years was a highside...leaving my driveway. How's that for stupid? Most of us have the occasional "oh shit" moment due to a lapse in concentration, unforeseen circumstances such as goats, sheep, cows running across the road or whatever, it is just that experience sharpens the skillset and we're able to (often...touch wood) carry out evasive, corrective action. But we can't expect all new riders to do this.
I remember one learner ride we took a few years back, we had 3 or 4 new 250cc riders crash one after the other on the same corner, right after each other because each target fixated on the rider in front of them crashing. People make mistakes, don't bash them about it unless they refuse to learn from it. This dude seems keen to learn from his mistake and the only one hurt was him and his machine.

Brett

Most new(ish) riders have the same issues. It is instinct to grab a handful of brakes when you freak out. My first crash on my 250cc was the same. Cocked up a line through a very twisty set of roads, freaked out, grabbed brakes, rode into ditch at about 50kph.

It takes experience to get to the point where you can fight that urge and instead commit the bike to the corner. Most racers on here will tell you that the tyres on your bike can hold on a lot longer than you think they can.

Just want to say hope you heal up, and if you do keep riding there's a couple of guys on that thursday night ride that do rider training (one road, one track from memory). Get as much training as you can, not only will you be safer out there, you'll actually get more enjoyment out of it.

And the guys being "harsh" really are bang on the money - that was some pretty terrible riding (sorry).

Get as much training as you can, not only will you be safer out there, you'll actually get more enjoyment out of it.

And the guys being "harsh" really are bang on the money - that was some pretty terrible riding (I don't recall all the straightlining shown in the video).

i couldn't care less how "bang on" they are, their not the ones who just got out of hospital and I do really get tired of their shit.

thanks mate, could have/should have been a lot worse, i know the rider training your talking of, i hit it up as much as i can.

I t-boned a Hillman Avenger in 3rd gear mid-powerband and managed to dislocate my ankle - it fucking hurt. Your lines however... well, were basically non-existent, constantly on the other side of the road, for really, no reason. It's not a dig, see it as education. The idea of going out there is to enjoy the corners, not make them all straight

I used to follow a wise old mate, (before he got made a bitch :) ). There would be a piece of road which he could straight line for bloody ages. Instead, he would flick from corner to corner like he was doing it in his sleep. He said to me "bikes are for corners; corners are for bikes. Wants the point in riding if you want to go straight?"

It's so much more fun flick a bike into late apex 20km/h slower then twisting the throttle and straight lining.

lesson learnt the hard way.

Gotta admit, I had a bit of a giggle when you just went straight ahead. Without hearing or seeing what else was happening it looked like you found an invisible road!

I was bloody surprised how quick the bike and you stopped. When I "learnt my lesson" (;) ) I was going a crap load slower but was riding out on a grass verge, scrubbed off more speed, then tried jumping a culvert. I landed no where near the bike. It was like you hit a brick wall. Crazy stuff!

Brett
18th October 2011, 21:20
My only other comment on this, is that if you are going to film clips of riding straight on motorways doing stuff, let there be at least a few decent wheelies or stoppies, not just accelerating into the distance. Straight-line speed only impresses the gay boys :shit:

That said, just get back out there, take it easy, and hit some really tight twisty roads at a pace you are comfortable with, and practice putting smooth lines together. There are plenty of roads around Auckland and its surrounds where you can have some real fun at road legal speeds. Start slow, build the pace up slowly until you are consistently riding with good lines and understand how your bike will behave in corners if you hit bumps, uneven surfaces etc. and you are comfortable correcting the bike from these incidents.

18th October 2011, 23:29

But at least he had the guts to share with us all, and to also acknowledge the fact that he was completely at fault and riding well beyond his abilities.
I just thought maybe were coming down a little hard on a young rider for learning the "hard way"....after all, we were all young, dumb and bullet proof at some stage in our life.

Just glad the kid didn't kill himself and has shown remorse and understanding regarding his actions....and hoping he hasn't been scared off this site (and bikes!) due to the amount of shit he's getting.

Good opportunity for a how to / how not to vid I think.

Much more beneficial for other riders to see two versions of what you should and shouldn't do, so as they can work out which category they fall into themselves. And improve themselves accordingly. Get others to come to the conclusion themselves, that they need to improve, before it is made painfully obvious.

Also, if you are going to post videos of you riding in a manner that suggests you are breaking the law, it would be a good idea to obscure the license plate in the video. See i was a little worried about the wheelies (cant do stoppies) ill practice them more plus the road was a little damp. The only reason it was all on the motorway was i was helping a friend out with some straight line filming for a project of his otherwise i would have been in the dairy flats :)

So if you're so clearly lacking in basic motorcycling skills, what's the fascination with going 'full tit', wheelies, and getting your knee down?

I think that the answer is simply that it is fun. Not that this is an excuse, but hey..many of us have done it mate! I get your point though, and I am sure Westy does too, he was a knob, pushing too hard with a serious lack of skills in the basket to handle his riding style. No one is arguing that, but no use continuing on with the lambasting when he is already rather contrite about his errors. If you went through all of my posts since 2004/2005 when I joined and started riding, I am sure you will find many comments that would be contrary to my current views given the progression of experience and the 'wisdom' one gains from having greater experience.
After 7 years of riding, I am not nearly the same person I was as a 20 year old. I know that Westy's case is a bit different given that those posts are not even a year old, but it only takes one incident to alter someones attitude and ultimately their behaviour. Essentially it is up to him to prove his intention. The KB halls are filled with people who are no longer with us due to accidents, some at their own fault, others victims of other road users...
It's only himself he is fooling by not sorting it all out, and I think he knows this. Mr Fruits offer is a good one. He would be silly not to take it up.

Couldn't agree more. When I started riding, I always wanted to get my knee down. Then I went to Superbike School. Now I couldn't even care remotely and purely aim to get my riding stupidly smooth no matter how slow. The funny thing is, the next level for me at the school is about getting your knee down (basically).

30 years ago you could run wide on a corner and 9 times out of 10 you'd hit thin air.

Now days, 9 times out of 10 you'll run head-on into something far more solid.

30 years ago you could piss someone off on the road and maybe get verbally abused for it.

Now days, you're likely to have someone deliberately try running you off the road.

Don't go confusing today with 30 years ago.

I hear this a lot from people that drove/ride 30 years ago. And in 30 years time I'll probably say the same thing about the conditions I drove/rode in.

But it's completely irrelevant what the conditions are like when you were young. The point is, your attitude towards those conditions at that time. Or more to the point, lack of. And your idea of "fun" at the times when you were young.

The old rockers drag raced with no kit on. The Generation XYZ tries to get their knee down. The Freaks that Float will bounce their hover bikes on to travelling cars. The common denominator is a young persons attitude.

The conditions in which we have our fun is not the issue. They simply dictate what the "fun" could be. The point is learning that the stupid shit you class as "fun" is actually that, stupid, before it's too late.

It goes a lot further than that.

We now live in an age where nanny state will quite happily remove our ability to have fun if we don't seriously look at regulating that 'fun' ourselves.

I totally agree. It's the attitude of when we are young. We all think we can do it on the road since it's "free". But telling someone they're going to die doing 'fun' stuff when they're young or telling them they're a loser isn't even remotely going to help.

Wouldn't it be nice if the next generation of young people decided that closed circuits are where it's at and that since so many more people are doing it the price comes drastically down to use them. And the companies operating them can make a good living by providing even more events.

Imagine the talent that we'd get through? Utopia.

Yes and no.
Combine all solid colours - Black
Combine all wavelengths of colours - White

So the whole black/white is not a colour, its a shade is actually false - shading is the point between black and white.

This (theory) was changed in the late 70's when we digitalized the spectrum. Don't believe me - what colour is 0xFFFF and 0x0000?

Least I have learnt how to take a corner properly, right lines, speed, positioning etc..

I have learnt not to grab brake in a corner, and only if ever, trail the rear, which has been put into use before. I have good slow speed skills in varying conditions.

Still plenty to learn, but there is no need to worry about me, just get healed and come out riding again.

I'm no saint, it has taken a lot of spills for me to learn my lesson. And I'm no expert, only been on the road 10 years.

But I think you are riding a bike that is FAR beyond your ability to control. It looked like you couldn't even make the easy corners before the easy corner where you binned.

I think you should get a slower bike and learn to ride that first. A panic reaction on a powerful bike may mean you do a wheely into a car or a tree or a pedestrian.

All you have to do is keep your eyes open , lift your head & slow down ..... That corner was only just a corner , you made it around the 80 or so before that !

In my opinion what happened is shit , all in all I am glad that you are still alive & I hope like fuck that you have learnt from all this , when you are better suck up the pride , pull you head in & start again , go back to NASS & LISTEN & DO the activity's that they are running , you are not Rossi.
