Crash 42
18th October 2011, 15:03
Mate, Marktime made a massive cockup on all the Grid positions for qualifying (people in complete wrong places, no times provided, and some even left off the grid!) and as far as what I heard on the day, most race results are unsure as well; it seems that they are holding back on the results until they are sure... So it's all a big mess at the moment I think

AMCC have never used transponders unless for National meetings and the response I had when I enquired as to why not was "People wont pay $35 a day for the hirage, and Marktime's just as good anyway"

have been told there was problems with recording times but....
All the races have been recorded on video and the results will be available and accurate to 1/60 sec.
Not sure what the issues were but they will be sorted for the next round.
White trash, we have used Tim and his transponders for club rounds last year and the outcome of the last meeting may be that we do so again from now on. The cost is quite a bit more than the $35 for the transponder hire, that's the cost to hire only the transponder. It costs the club several thousand $$ extra to hire Tim and the timing gear, that has to be passed on to the rider and added to the entry fee.
The club had several issues to deal with on Sunday which will be de-briefed on next week.
Enjoyed the two skids I had anyway.
Mike from F3, who got choppered out of the circuit is all fine and dandy and home nursing a sore shoulder and finger. Check out the series of photos on highside photography. Also check out Zoompics.co.nz and Damien Toman.
We are getting some pretty good photographers along to the races now so most angles are getting covered on most corners!

Cheers for the clarification Graham, to be fair it was no one from the current committee that justified the non transponder use.
For the record, there's nothing to stop clubs buying their own timing gear and 100 transponders from AMB, then hiring them out to participants themselves. Be a good investment I reckon.

Sweet, it's not too bad. That crash caused quite a delay. At least he got a helicopter ride for his efforts!!

I think it would be more trouble than it is worth:
* the cost would still have to be passed on to riders somehow.
* who owns/maintains the transducer buried in the tracks ?
* At least 3 trained people to operate the system at EVERY meeting
* Another pile of gear to be transported/stored/maintained/kept track of
I think it is better for a third party to manage all that - I know that the car and bike clubs that use Ruapuna own the gear that is used there and manage it all themselves, but the only time I raced there I got a transponder that failed during the course of the day and I ended up with a bunch of DNS - recorded (which was probably more flattering than my actual times :) )
Most clubs have trouble getting enough volunteers to do all the stuff they do now and Tim Gibbs outfit seem to have it pretty much "weighed off"
I don't think Tim Gibbs is getting rich from doing the the timing either.

And anyone building a new track without slinging some fiber optics around the show is a muppet.

Tim Gibbes is a bloody legend and has dedicated himself to NZ Motorcycling for decades. Now when he should probably be playing golf somewhere, he has built himself a small business that gives great service and probably makes only a minor profit compared to what a modern business plan would be based on. Trying to come up with different ways to undermine Tim's Timing system business doesn't do any New Zealander any credit at all. Maybe helping him to expand would be the better solution.

Tim is not omnipotent.
Should he want to expand, then your point about wanting to assist expansion is valid. I can't see how clubs / tracks having their own transponders or loops would affect this?
Regardless of his profit, loss, dedication or legendary status; Tim runs a business, not a charity. A business survives or fails on its own merits.
We supposedly live in a free market economy, not some nepotistic old boys club. If a club wants to SAVE MONEY and buy their own transponder system then that's their business.
Competition always delivers improvement and innovation.
I'm sure a more than fair chunk of the current transponder system charges go into AMB's pocket. Nobody is deliberately trying to undermine Tim Gibbes. Aren't we allowed to discuss and investigate alternatives?
Tim's business would continue to do just fine as his service and knowledge is good. He may even find some time for golf.

I agree with your comments entirely. I simply add that there may not be any need to reinvent the wheel using Videotape and a stopwatch, and that Tim doesn't drive an S Class Mercedes. Time your races with your fingers if you think it will save you a buck.

i think Round 3 is still a couple of weeks away? 11.th dec, if you go to mylaps and spend a bit of time with a pen and paper you can figure your overall standings... AMCC website should be updated very soon with the details i'd say...
