I smashed my tailbone after crashing into a lip of a ripple strip while bucket racing, so not very huge speeeds but fast enough..... I broke my tailbone (which is healing/ed nicely) except I have a large hematoma from the right of my coccyx and into my butt cheek. It's 10 cm's long and at least that wide at the top of it and gets smaller toward the end.

I have had ongoing issues with the hematoma including an infection (treated) and the pain was almost gone. 3 months on and I still have the hematoma and it's still the same size. Over the past two day's it's felt much more irritated. I can't massage arnica into it anymore and its REALLY itchy, I am not as mobile as it hurts to move and I have pain down my leg at times. So as I gave up on my GP after the last visit and being told to "take your pain killers and rest" and I went and saw a physio - she has never seen one as big as this and is going to consult some of her colleagues but holds out little hope.... Both have suggested surgery after at least a year.....

Anyway - am wondering if anyone on here has had a similar issue/ accident and if so, what treatment helped? I am open to anything including acupuncture and some other alternative treatments......

Make another apointment with your doctor, stress to him that you're finding it difficult to live with the problem and it's not improving. If you're not then confident he has a workable treatment plan ask to be refered to a specialist.

If that doesn't happen and you're still in pain or worried go to the ED, at least there you'll get a fresh diagnosis. Be prepared to wait.

Luck, H.

Oh dear... sorry to hear that, from what I have heard, hemo's just need draining. Had one on my brain some time in Dec 1983 at Gracefeild and they just waited til it went away. Think it's gone now...

OUCH!!! - of course I like to things 'properly' mine is a solid ball. Doc has tried putting needle into it a few times - no success.

It's been ultrasounded (SIC!) and x-rayed. Specialist won't see me until its been there a year..... :(

Sorry to hear this - you poor wee thing :(. I had a similar (but not so bad) injury - landing on the dangerous concrete ripple strip at Mt. Wellington (a rider clipped my wide bars trying a risky overtaking manoeuvre in practice :(). It was my lower spine that took the brunt of it. My coccyx was fortunately intact. The physio lady also said it was the biggest bruise she had worked on. The Hematoma was large and the physio worked it painfully hard on each visit. It eventually dispersed over many months. I don't really like to show this photo but you will see it was also quite nasty. I appreciate that your injury is much worse.

SNAP! My whole right butt cheek and lower back was that colour for weeks. Went ot a lovely black then purple then blue, green yellow.... I almost had to buy new pants as my arse cheek was so swollen I couldn't get most of my pants on!!

Sucks, eh! The physio has said that it is a bit too late and in the wrong place (glute) to just be able to work it out now. If I'd have know I would've gone to see a physio earlier. Thought it would slowly start to get better, I am not a patient person so this is really testing me. M just had shoulder reconstruction surgery too so maybe I have just been doing too much??

Yes

what treatment helped? .
Nothing

22 months later it is still slightly swollen and tender

Ultrasound some 7-8 months after the accident went along the lines of
Person 1
"Oh I haven't seen anything like that before I will get someone else to have a look"
Person two
"That's quite interesting We'll just get the head of the department"
Head of department after 5-10 minutes
Very interesting injury, haven't seen anything like it, it will take ages to heal and there's really nothing that can be done

Mine was front in front of the hip to the other side of my spine and from just above the waist about 150mm down, Thanks for running into me Harvey you bastard

I guess I must have stated my first post wrong. I know it's going to take some time but I need some way of lessening the side effects. I would do anything to make the itchiness dissapear, it's driving me mental cause now I can't even touch it. Yet up to three days ago I was able to massage it everyday and it was helping....just not sure why it gets better then flairs up again.....

Maybe I just got lucky as I had none of that, it's not a particular type of clothing rubbing and causing irritation?

Nah, tried a few things. Unfortunately it's a deep itch - like it's coming up from underneath, and in my bones then it almost starts to feel like it's burning after awhile....

I had shingles on my face a few years ago, I got hold of some "St John's Wort".
Rub it on the skin neat, and actually drink the stuff, too. Seemed to help. The itching I got when the rash was healing felt like spiders under my skin... FUGGIN ITCHY.

I'd definitely tell the doctor that it was OK to massage daily and is now very painful to even touch. Some deep haematomas can abscess and you definitely don't want a deep abscess in your glute or base of your spine. I'd suspect the GP would either try an FNA again (fine needle aspirate - try to suck some stuff out) or just put you on to a course of Augmentin just to be safe. Things shouldn't get worse. Get it seen it. Good luck with it!

Had that when I broke my back, think it's a sign of healing. But christ it's annoying, even scracthing the spot did nothing, would even keep me awake.

Yeah, I always try and tell myself that it's probably a good thing. I lived with severe eczema for the first 12 years of my life - never thought I would experience that sort of itchiness again!!

A couple of things you could try Hels. Buy some Hirudoid cream, it really helps with breaking down haematomas. I have been using it on my leg and am getting some improvement. Rub it in to cause pain, deep massage stuff.

The other thing is acupuncture. I have not had it for haematoma but I did have it for a massive chill blain on my finger. One application of the needle and you could literally watch this thing disappearing.

Good luck with it, there is no joy in a massive haematoma, I can not imagine what it must be like having one on your arse, a full calf one is bad enough.

x2 for the acupuncture idea.
Also have you considered alternative treatment? Homeopathic remedies can often bring relief that mainstream medicine scoffs at - not sure if you have a chemist locally that has someone who knows their shit, and acc wont cover it but a good word of mouth Homeopath could make a specific remedy for you.......

It's not mainstream medicine that scoffs at Homeopathy, it's science. There's some stuff like eating extracts from the bark of the white willow tree which actually works. The bark basically contains aspirin which is a pretty awesome all around drug.

The stuff like "this vial of water has touched other water that has been in contact with a vat of water that has had a kg of leaves crushed in it and thus the energy from the leaves has been imparted into the water" doesn't fly.

ACC won't cover homeopathy for a reason. ACC will cover acupuncture because it can actually work. I guess the other thing in favour of Homeopathy is the 'Placebo Effect' which seems to be better than any actual medicine in many cases.

Sorry to rant. I just got all riled up with alternative medicine when my friend died at 23 from cancer. She paid hundreds of dollars to sit in a room for hours holding a specific coloured piece of string (colour therapy) to cure her cancer. The "therapist" told her she was cancer-free. She died shortly after. I hate that people make shitloads of money from this stuff

Actually I have had Homeopathic treatments before and they worked..... I will try anything. Definitely agree that acupuncture works and will be looking at booking some treatments soon, no matter what cost to me. Off to see my GP today to ensure that I 'exhaust' all available mainstream medical treatments as well.

I know a guy who once mixed up his piles paste and his tooth paste and he ended up with sore gums and a ring of confidence!

Sorry to hear that you still have a broken arse Chick.

To be honest, I would be a little wary about 'massage' of any kind on a bruise this bad. It could very easily exacerbate the injury, especially if your tailbone has not mended yet. How is your "range of motion"? Is your arse still sore when sitting for lengthy periods of time? Bending over still painful?

Above all else..... a second opinion, your GP sounds rather unhelpful to be honest. There are sports medicine Drs around, specialising in these types of injuries - seek one out in your area.

Get heaps of fibre and fluids into you (not beer :bleh: ) these nutrients in your diet will be a big help too.

There is an arnica spray which is faster acting. Sprayed under the tongue - faster delivery to the blood stream = betterer results.

Yep, been shoving the arnica pills down... will look at getting the spray too....

Just been to see my doc, who while she doesn't believe in 'alternative treatments' she does believe that arnica is effective. However she believes (along with the lady at the health centre) that it is a little bit too bad and too late for arnica to be effective :(

Today I have been to see the doc again who tried anothe fine needle aspiration to no avail. I have just come back from getting an ultrasound but pretty much looks like its not infected (yay).....

I had a simple low side that saw me crash right into the lip (a few inches high) on the edge of ripple strip on one of the fastest corners of the track. The impact was such that I was flung into the air and thrown/rolled bowled and arseholed - several metres off the track so I was just very unlucky. Or lucky, as it could have been much worse!

Yes, I was wearing a back protector and yep it's a good quality one.

Yep and TBH if was kind of made worse by the back protector as I smashed myself right where the edge of the back protector sits (bad luck). The initial bruise was shaped like a back protector around the edge and ripple strip in the middle...

Not wanting to sound like a freak, but looking at the picture that would mean the bottom wasnt long enough, as it should cover the top part of the bum bum

Umm, I broke my tailbone.... and that was not a pic of me, was a pic of Damien, he was giving me an example of his bruise. My bruise was only on my butt cheek - exactly where my hematoma is.
My back protector is plenty long enough - it's almost too big! It's also a good brand, but not interested in talking about brands so let's move on...

Don't get me wrong, the injury would most likely have been more than a mere 'small crack' in my tailbone and huge hematoma had I not been wearing one/ or wrongly sized. My back protector is actually very long and definitely fits more than well.
It was a freak accident, I literally smacked my arsehole....
