don't do it , reverse cyl tzrs were a lemon , do a search on here and you may find the post showing the 100 odd mods yamaha nz had to do to stop them shiting themselves when they were new

the fact is ive got my eye on it because a mate of mine is selling it and i don't have the money to spend on a decent assembled bike right now hmm hard decision i mean it does have a spare motor with it and it's basically all there but yea i don't want something thats got a million problems

:| Read 'lemon' and 'old cheap tzr' in good nick... and its either stolen or screwed. Don't waste you time. Specially if the ignition barrel is smashed downwards...
And a 2smoker 250 is a little bit of a jump from a 50cc as well... unstable power deliver could get you off the bike very quick.

They were a great looking bike, but boy did they shit themselves. The model before parallel front ways cylinders was a much better bike reliability wise & a lot of fun. If you are on a budget stay well clear. Why do you think there is a spare engine? Chances of that spare being any better, oohh about nil.
Yamaha put out a 4 page mods list when these were new to try to prevent them shitting themselves within a month - didn't really work. Steer well clear of a brand new one and even further from a used one. It's in bits for a reason.

Go to the mods link and that details the attempts to make one semi reliable.

I love two stroke, always have, having ridden TZR's from all eras they are fantastic bikes. But I must agree with the negetive here. Regardless of reliability as I presume you would fully rebuild it, the cost of revinning alone is huge. 2 strokes are wonderful but cost lots to run. My dads 1000cc Vtwin uses less fuel than my TDR. Once you add oil its even worse. Plus mantanance. Add to that vibrations and 150km fuel range. You get the picture.
