hi just got my new rm 250 and only do trial rides would i benefit having a flywheel weight or should i just use a 12 tooth front sprocket for the lower gearing any help would be greatfull cheers

Mate, if ya have the coin to drop, a flywheel wieght will be a very good addition to your steed, smooths the power, makes engine harder to stall and increses traction by reducing wheel spin, excellent for bush riding and wet conditions.

I run a light flywheel weight on mine, 8oz from memory as I wanted a little more roll on through the corners, but I'm an aggressive rider and 10oz might suit most. I run std gearing, I did experiment with different gearing for racing and when expecting long fast straights, went back to std for trails cause 1st 2nd and 3rd are so tall on MX bikes and most the trails up this way are pretty tight these days. Bills Pipes expansion chamber with stock muffler worked best for me to give low down grunt and midrange but rev out in the fast stuff, shorty mufflers killed top end over rev and were too noisy. First thing you can do to smooth it out is retard the timing about a coin width, this well give a lot more traction in slippery terrain. And of course jetting.

Agreed on the flywheel weight, you want to tame the bike and the stock gearing isn't an issue for general trail use (I basically used 2nd and a bit of clutch for the tight stuff, 3rd for the more open stuff).

You can put a pipe on it to get more bottom end, but there's more than enough for the average trail rider, which is why the tall gearing isn't really an issue. Just try and tame that damn throttle response, that got me into soooo much trouble on the trails...

thanks guys went to mvn motorcycles and got a 10ounce weight it cost me 169inc gst and 40 to get fitted 2morrow so thanks guys for the help yep the rm is mint goes like a rocket so cant wait for the weekend to take it for a good run with the flywheel weight:scooter::scooter:

Hi Dave, heres some food for thought, though I see you already have your flywheel weight. Flywheel weights do work, But i dont love them. Once you put them on you'l never take them off. Some riding conditions, like riding in sand, you need or the power you can get. Another realy good option which you guys might not even be aware of is the G2 throttle cam system. Its simple, Alloy throttle tube which comes with 3 different cams which change the rate of pull on the cable. the cams are easy to change, less than 5 min. this means if you want to go ride Moto, stick the stock cam in, if it's wet and slippery, stick the mellow 400 cam in, and there's a intermediate 200 cam also. you can tailor the power delivery to suit the conditions and your riding ability. Worth checking out. used by Paul Whibley, Karl Power, James Stewart etc worth a look at.
Also. if your trail riding. I would recommend the stock gearing. a 12t front sprocket will make the gearing very short and make the bike even more responsive and hard to hold onto. Scotty AmPro Yamaha USA
