Yep, sorry to have to say but......

.....me and a few of my mates would be really keen to set up and race a bucket. Now, me personally is a total nob when it comes to this so, for my benefit, what should I be thinking about for a first timer.

I have some great mates who are road riders but want to get involved so I have the people, its just the knowledge and wisdom. I've been to a few meetings and have really eenjoyed the whole atmosphere and vibe, hence my wish to have a go.

Any and all advice greatly appreciated guys n gals,

FM

Turn up at the December meet and bludge a ride on somebodys bike as a first step.
November is the two hour with the NI series round on the saturday so people will be a bot more distracted than normal.
Other than that, make sure you have all the correct gear and start looking for a bike. FXRs are popular these days because they are easy to convert and reasonably competitive stock.
Not many race ready bikes turn up for sale although the Lancaster CB125T has been on TM for $1100 for ages now. Good bike, good price and JC can tell you more than you would ever need to know about them.

Yeah man.
Bucket racers are notoriously slutty with their bikes. Turn up with gear, show some interest and someone will let you throw your leg over. I'm in the middle of building a stable of bikes for my girls and I. The decisions we have been faced with involve the following variables. A: Buying something ready to go and paying more money depending on how competitive it is vs. B: Buying various bits and pieces as they become available and waiting for them to congeal into a viable bucket. B looks cheaper but I did some sums and in my opinion it can easily end up more expensive and take more time. So we have sold my road bike and are doing both, as well as waiting for a blardy cheap pro-twin to come on the market. Then you also have to consider two stroke vs. diesel. Two strokes seem to be favoured by the kind of geezers what like being underdogs and shoving it up lazy buggers like me.
Anyway, if you have a budget between $1-2k, and are keen to get into it without delay, hover around this forum and tardme waiting for a race ready FXR which has had the wide wheels fitted and had some of the typical mods. If the budget is smaller, or you have more time, or you have the mechanical skill, or you like to swim against the current just because you can and the pies taste sweeter, build something novel and really get into the bucket spirit. I reckon that this isn't really the cheap option but probably gives a keener buzz. I couldn't wait.
Anyway Fatty, each day without a bucket is a day too many. Look forward to seeing you out there man.

If you have the lump sum now and want a competitive bike, by far the cheapest way to get to the pointy end is to buy an already built and race proven bike (if anything is available that is what with the 2hr and GP looming I doubt anyone with a fast bike is selling right now). That CBR150 for $4k was a steal but you should be able to get something good for under $2k.
What ever way you choose to go, buckets is a real kick in the pants.

Cheers guys
All great advice, appreciated
Good thing is there are a few of us involved so we are all looking at chipping in, that makes the whole cost easier on the pocket so I'm looking at at least a semi race ready bike. Just need to agree on how much everyone can toss in.
Exciting stuff though, cheers

Yes mate, aware of that, hence someone else in the group will be doing the riding. Mind you, always up for a couple of 'Lardy Laps' just for effect, eh.....:shit:

Well hang on, couldn't you get some kind of dispensation, you know - weight/hp - I reckon you'd be eligible for a 250 wouldn't you?

That concept has been discussed a number of times. Lead weighted vests, then we see how quick these light bastards are (still probably quicker than me and I would have lost an excuse, maybe not such a good idea)

She died a horrid death... after spitting everyone off who rode her (apart from me)
she started to rattle, then drop to one.. then a loud bang followed by a sound like ball bearings shaken in a tin can..

sorry ...

Cheers guys,

Sort of looking at building from scratch to be in the spirit of the thing. Have weighed up the pro's and cons but I am fortunate enough to have a set of really experinenced mates who are mad for it.

Stage I is to get along to a few meets and see how it goes. I've had some really helpful texts and PMs from you lovely people offering help and advice, really appreciated.

Plus, my 7 year old boy is mad keen himself. I took him to the cart track at Mt Wellimgton and he just loved it, now that Dad and his friends are building a bike, well, hes stoked.

Such a great bunch of people, thanks for your time.....
