Where in the world are Grundys and Odlins?

Hey Guys, I was wondering who could tell me where Grundys and Odlins tracks are in this country. Is it on the North or South Islands?...anyone????

To be a little more helpful than the Brat and the Banjo Picker. Both are not far north of Wellington.

Odlins runs from the summit of the Akatarawa Road which goes between Upper Hutt and Waikanae. 'Odlins' i think is a local name and it's real name might be Ngatiawa Road or Mangaone South Road.

Grundys is a little north of that. I haven't ridden it but I believe it joins Odlins road to Otaki Gorge Road which funnily enough is just outside Otaki.

On an unrelated note, Why are they so many Mangaone Roads/streams etc in NZ, if you look around they are everywhere.

Nah, Sadly Grundy's doesnt link Odlins to Otaki forks. It would be awesome if it did, but that track is really foot traffic only, or a skilled trials rider. A friend of mine tried it on his mountain bike and had to walk out with 2 broken wrists and his bike down a large slip nearly in the river...:shit:
Odlins, as correctly described is an awesome, all weather, in and out track from the Akatarawa road summit, near Waikanae, or Rimutaka depending on your perspective.
Grundy's is a track, a small network of tracks really, that gets its name from the (rough as) hut that is near the summit of the track. From Otaki access is a bit tricky, and involves a ride across fields on a dubiously legal track (no use now with lambs around), or a ride through a working quarry (closed and locked at weekends), or the easiest is from a little further South over the road swingbridge at otaki forks. Even this involves a ride down a section of road mared as Private road, keep out.
The first time we found this access point we ended up in someones back garden!:innocent:
The best bit of Grundy's is that it also links directly to the Thompsons hill track that comes out at the back of Ohau (right past a locked gate with keep out sign - but you only see this if you look in your mirrors:innocent:). If you go in from the forks you avoid the farm land and quarry when you link to Thompsons. Not suitable for novices or road based tyres either. All in all a fairly rugged place to ride - but SO worth it!:rockon:
The ultimate link up would be from Odlins to Otaki forks, then you could ride from Paraparaumu to just south of Levin, pretty much all on great off road tracks... Not really likely though:bye:

Interestingly you used to be able to drive a car to the saddle on Waiotauru Rd 25 years ago, I did it many times when I was tramping in the Tararua’s regularly. On my map it shows it as a private rd, which is probably where the Name Odlins comes from as Odlins used to be a reasonably large timber merchant in the Wellington area.

Hi there as discribed in the thread odlins road great fun ride and easy to get to, as for the grunndys and thompson track its not really for anyone to rock up and go in there as some of the land is owned by framers that has to be crossed.
I have made contact with both partys where there are farms or land that has to be crossed as i have had an organised ride through here before, there is a thread for Grunndys Thompson track of the last ride and a organised ride to go in December.

About 30-35 years ago you could drive right through 2 Otaki forks but dirt bikes were pretty stink back then
