View Full Version : Waiouru Adventure Ride (WAR) 2011

buggsubique
25th October 2011, 16:21
Likely to be 10 & 11 Dec. Currently working with Range Control for access to zones, numbers of riders etc etc.

As last time it will likely be a late Sat morning meet in Waiouru, range briefing, then hit the tracks. Unsure how many riders, who, nor even the terrain yet...all will become clearer.

May be an empty promise yet, but I should know later this week and be able to confirm access by mid Nov.

Hey, I have watched the videos above (especially the sucking quicksand - it wore me out just watching) and don't quite get how this enthusiasm to try this out for yourself quite squares with your comments a week or so back that you were 60 and needed to take it easier now in the DB1K............?!!

Righto lads, we've been given access similar to last time - basically right up either side of the highway to Tukino rd, access to the lake, the desert, and right out the back to the end of Argo rd.

Numbers are TBC but around 10-15. Will only be taking guys from this forum at this stage.

We will have a briefing mid saturday morning in Camp which everyone will need to be there for (incl those who have already had it from last time).

No pussies, idiots, roadbikes or poorly equipped riders will qualify for the ride. This is a place where sh*t can go wrong real quick. More to follow on this aspect. Suffice to say, you will need a reliable bike, cold / wet weather gear / spares / tools etc. No one will be left to fend for them selves as I am responsible for the group. The guts is we need team players (which most of us Adv dudes are).

Key things are tyre choice and make sure you've got enough meat on the brake pads - the soil is corrosive...

Unsure just yet on the route, but I think we will look to spend Saturday in the sand / astride SH1 doing fun stuff, bit of XC pioneering, then sunday morning we might head out the back on the road as a wind down.

Also accommodation is TBC. Anyone want to camp out vs nice room in town / Kune vs barrack accommodation? I can check and book people in to camp if that's the preference. I may also be able to book dinner and breakkie and bagged lunch but need TBC...if this is possible the cost is very reasonable at around $7-8 per meal.

So as you can we we're slightly over capacity at the moment, but there's a couple who seem to be tentative. I'll see how we go for barrack space and access & if we strike any issues with this number.

Obviously if we have to reduce numbers then I'll have to be the bad guy and say sorry to a couple of hopefuls - it will probably be those less well known to the forum...my gut tells me we should be ok with a couple over the cap tho...

OK, I have accommodation booked in camp. I haven't got a confirmed price yet but last time it was less than $10 per head (from memory) with all linen supplied and individual rooms (possibility of dorms this time, unsure) and high pressure steenkin hot showers. each will need to reimburse me up in Waiouru as I will be invoiced and pay upfront on our behalf.

Will everyone require accommodation? Let me know if you don't otherwise I'll assume you do.

Food is also sorted. Basically we buy meal tickets at $9.80 dinner and $8.65 Breakkie / Lunch. This is for a buffet / hot press that you go through and normally has a full compliment of vege's a several meat choices (to select one from...thy're funny like that...).

So in my mind, this is all pretty easy and awesome value for money rather than buying crappy pizzas & pies up the road.

Looks like I might have to bail on this ride. Damn social engagements.

I have my partners work Xmas party on the friday night, which means I would have to stick around Auckland friday night, and after that I would need a hella early start to get to Waiouru intime for the morning briefing, and after 400km on the road I will be too knackered to enjoy the ride to its full potential. And I have a good mates 40th on the Saturday night.

So I shall bow-out and let some other lucky bugger take my spot.

Thanks heaps for organising this again Buggs, last time it was bloody excellent.

We Can't have just one 690 there, even though NF is correct on the chase ratio...might as well cement a classic KTM podium finish

Awaiting room costs, but I made a cock up telling you it was under $10 - it was a bit over $30 per room last time, sorry about that, so let me know if this is a problem for anyone.

mate $30.00 is a bargin. Barring any last minute disasters the 950 and 690 boys a eager and good to go  one thing though; I'm running an E07 on the front which is pretty good but do you think a more aggressive knobby front is called for?

buggsubique
12th November 2011, 17:29
An aggressive front will likely serve you well, esp if wet but im only going to run a D605 front and e07 rear...bit slippery but manageable. It can be as hard or easy as we want it to be really. I dont think we'll be full on trail riding tho...unless its dry.

come over Thurs night - we'll find a bed for you.

Takapari is a dead end but you would like it (similar to mungatapu but betterer)

We will be leaving about 8.30 (subject to Steves OK) on Fri morning from Waikanae.

if you get in at 11.30 you will pretty much have to head straight up to Waioru - which is pretty damn boring....

Yup - my anicipatorometer is hitting the stops as well

speaking of which.....
time has gotten away from me a bit - got my bike back together - just waiting on a new water pump impeller - but I haven't got around to putting the new tires on.
How critical will sharp tires be? I'm surprised at were a bald e07 rear will get you with lots of revs and momentum ( the charge of the heavy brigade comes to mind...). My 606 front is pretty manky as well

if you think its needed I'll get the bike shop to put the new tires on once I get it mobile.

Funny how the anticipatorometer gets away on you. I've hit the blow off valve. Been taking tabs for that..

Take the wheels off & take them into the bike shop. Make sure you've ordered the tyre first.

I've also been doing work on the bike.
1. New EO9 on the back. The front will have to wait, but is looking betterer now I've turned it around;
2. New CRF hi bend handlebars. The old bars were too high following the fork conversion & were stretching cables. The barkbusters technically need a different fitting to go on these, but it's amazing what a little bending will do for you. Broke one side of the clutch perch (internal clamp fixture) getting it onto the bars. Hopefully the bodge will hold, because its going to take 10 days to get a new one ex the UK. Also wrecked my heated grips getting them off the old bars - but have bodged those too;
3. Cleaned the air filter. Amazing amount of dirt for the limited no of times I've ridden with that filter. Also concerning when you think that I have breathed in a similar amount of that shit....

I was up there this weekend and had a quick squizzle at the tracks. Most of it is very dry and dusty at the moment but the long term forecast seems to be a bit showery this week.

My philosophy is that I'll be running my road tyres...probably at road pressures, and therefore if it gets hairy its a sign for me to back off and take it a bit easier, or choose less gnarly routes. I doubt it will be as wet as last time so I reckon average tyres should cut the mustard OK. My D605 front is 2/3 worn and E07 rear about 1/4 - 1/3 worn.

I guess the thing with Waiouru is that it is such a wicked playground. We will be like pigs in sh*t on these tracks and it really is hard to keep a lid on things and ride sensibly enough to last two days. Good tyres are either gonna help you ride, or encourage you to ride harder. OTY, but I intend for it to be a ride where we collectively need to keep it together and all stay in one piece.

As a loose plan, we will spend all Saturday out under the mountain. There will be some technical riding here and it will likely be a long day. Sunday will likely head offroad up to the lake, then hook back in and head east to the end of the Argo Rd, allowing people to cut away from Waiouru on Sunday in the early afternoon.

I'll see how I go for time this week and I might throw together some waypoints for those with GPS's. It will be a bit of "pick a path" which should be fun.

I need to do some last minute sorting of the accommodation on Mon / Tues as I'm not confident we've been booked into the right barracks. I will confirm by Weds latest.

Not long now....:msn-wink:

Guys, need a real quick reply from this:

The barracks we have been booked in to for Free is essentially an empty space - we will need sleeping bags and bed roll / thermal mat / camping mattress whatever you want to call it. Otherwise we'll be sleeping in your riding gear on the floor...

The alternative which I need uber-fast replies from you is to pay for individual rooms at $32 per pesron for Sat night stayers, or $55 per person for both nights.

This is the list I have:

Fri & Sat:
-me
-Gav
-NightFalcon
-9Fiddy
-Bart
-BMWRSNUT
-StormTrooper
-Underground

Sat Only:
-Hugo
-Waihou
-GPSMan
-Clint
-MXNut

Please reply to this post ASAP to say whether you can bring your own bedding ("Free"), or otherwise if you want me to book you in at the respective costs above.

I need a reply before 4pm today otherwise it will be the scummy freebie accommodation as default. Sorry for this last minute F*around. It's called the Fog of WAR.

A few waypoint's we'll pick our way between...a couple of others not shown... I'll do up a garmin file so ya's can upload the waypoints or something. The intent is that we'll do a bit of XC navigation between waypoints on whatever tracks we can find, rather than following a defined route / track file. I'll have a crack tonight at doing WPts for the whole ride...start using these GPS's for what they're made for - complimenting navigational ability!

OK, this might be problematic for those on a tight budget, so my apologies there but the group consensus was to get the beds if we were able to.

So, We are now booked into the same barracks we were in last year for those of us...(anyone...?) who were there. I think we'll all appreciate a bed after Saturday's efforts. I will pm my account details or you can pay cash up to me up there, whichever works. Hopefully you'll all come to the party - its a ~$600 bill for the group.

$55 for the Fri and Sat nighters, or $32 for the Sat night only dudes.

Again, real sorry for the late notice of this cost - I should have suspected free digs were too good to be true...

If this is a question for me, then to be honest I'm kinda unsure exactly which route we will take yet. I am kinda almost thinking about going through the training area for part of it. If we want to keep it simple and stay public access then we can, and bring whoever if that's what you had in mind.

I'll have my netbook for those who want to upload to GPS up there.

Day 1 is loosely clockwise but revisits a couple of wpts in a big figure 8 to make the most of the desert.

Day 2 is Clockwise and starts with a challenge section on the way up to the lake, then comes back and heads east to the end of the road.

planning on leaving the coffee cart at 8.30 (I'll be there about 8.15 for a snort)

Weather looks to be a bit on & off. It is real changeable up there, so I guess what I'd say is expect a bit of slippery stuff on Sunday morning. If it gets too unmanageable we'll just keep to the easy tracks between Camp & Access Road 17 as most of the other stuff is sand or gravel.

No real rush, but I guess the earlier people arrive, the quicker we can bugger off riding - depending on if you want to wait and have a cheap feed in camp from 5.30 or scoff down on the main road. There's about 9 or 10 of us staying Fri night now, which only leave 4-5 others to arrive on Sat morning (= sleep in :niceone:).

Just trying to get that other zone now for Fri night, so we're looking to do maybe ~90km on Fri evening. If we want to take it easier we will just stick to Tukino Rd and do the other bit on Saturday.

There's a couple of roads I wouldn't mind checking out west of SH1 (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?saddr=upper+hutt&daddr=Takapari+Road,+Pohangina,+Manawatu-Wanganui+to:-39.9329537,175.9219003+to:Te+Kapua+Road,+Mangaweka ,+Manawatu-Wanganui+to:-39.76188,175.71662+to:Kaweka+Road,+Taihape,+Manawa tu-Wanganui+to:Waiouru+Military+Camp,+Manawatu-Wanganui&hl=en&ll=-40.287907,177.736816&spn=3.360623,7.064209&sll=-39.9462,175.890942&sspn=0.052773,0.110378&geocode=Fa99jP0dP15vCintCcnWmrFAbTEhmaNDYe8ABQ%3BF WrAnP0dyLR8CimnpH8W6edBbTE9phcQAKy07g%3BFeernv0d7F p8CikLeK9s3t9BbTFwGMwGYe8AEw%3BFffYoP0dbul5CimrVNG VcXpqbTH4_CRadDp8CA%3BFShIof0dDDl5CimxcP8eI3tqbTHQ xAQHYe8AEw%3BFY7Aof0d01N5Cin3uMEo1WRqbTGzie6zjbJ73 Q%3BFXu4pf0djLB4CikROpp_zltqbTFw-aJDYe8ABQ&vpsrc=6&mra=dpe&mrsp=2&sz=13&via=2,4&t=m&z=7) / Taihape. I sort of need to be in Waiouru mid afternoonish so if worst comes to worst I will just cut away and head north to get my range briefing and pick up my roads on the way back instead.

Is everyone doing Takapari Rd or are others riding up the main drag?

Hi Bugs

be great if you can join us

I don't know if everyone is going to do Takapri - its all pretty loose....

I was hopeing to be at the start of Takapri Rd about 10.30 ish and I would assume 2 hrs would easily cover the return trip up Takapari (I'd like to get to the mud bog a couple of km past the hut - awesome track) . Assume we could get to Mangaweka around 1pm-1.15? allowing for a quick snort/feed at Mangaweka - say leave Managweka by 1.30-1.45 - is that getting too tight for your timing?

To stop the day 'slipping' - 8.30 is the time we leave Waikanae - not the time we get there :)
I'm aiming to get to Waikanae by 8.15 to allow time for a hot chocolate

Any latecomers can catch up on the way to Ashurst (via Shannon) where we will stop on the grassy bit just before (east of) the service station to meet Bart and Wade at approx 9.45.

cheers

Mark

Well, We're all completely knackered ... most of us knocked out around 450km today from Wellington / Wairarapa up into the cloud at the top of Takapari Rd then back roads to Taihape where we put away coffees and burgers before doing the last 100km this evening up around Waiouru. Tried to attach some teaser photos but too high res so sorry - even photobucket is shitting out, bit of a lame post...

One thing is for sure; we are all gonna be totally exhausted come Sunday night...:violin:

Will post again tomorrow night and try to get some photos up. 10 of us here in the Desert Oasis, aka Waiouru... the remaining four join us tomorrow morning.

Great weekend riding, plenty of thrills, spills, big AT spills, broken KLR's, stunning sights, secret army training camps :shifty: sun burnt faces, dust, mud, clay, steep bits, rutty bits, gravelly bits, all in all, an action packed weekend of adv riding....thanks Matt for all your hard work organising another first class event...your a ledgend:clap:

Dunno about you fellas, but I'm absolutely rooted after the last three days...

Made it to Wellington on reserve. 23L tank, took 22.7L to fill, haha. Also had to bump start it at BP. Something not right with my lights maybe - or the battery is stuffed, but with lights off the battery builds up enough to turn it over.

Don't think I'll be doing the DB1k. Basically a week to get the bike sorted before I take it south...ain't gonna happen, esp with the news of my trip next year. the WAR is always so hard on the AT...:weird:

Glad y'all had fun. Photos to follow...by the bucket load.

horses & KLR's

I am glad you have spotted the majestic way these two go together; although horses used in the same context as KLRs usually involve
"the KLR has limitless horses" or "the abundance of horses on the KLR" or the other way (ie the similarities between the two) usually horses are referred to thoroughbreds - so apart from the semantics ......................carry on

sounds like a great weekend BTW

Do you feel better now that youve got that out of your system?

I only fell off 3 times - so I'm getting better

It doesn't matter how many time you fall off its the number of times that you get back up that counts.

Great photos !!!!!!!!!!!!!

All those spots remind me of 4WD trips years ago but we where up there in the snow.

Might have to try and get there next time if there is a next time.

Cool vid Hugo Nougo, and good to meet you, I envy those who post such good vid and pics, bmwrsnut tried to train me on monday morning how to post pics here but i'm afraid it just went straight out the other ear .
I'd post something complimentary about Bart but he can probably do without the expence of buying a new helmet in the next size up.

Sorry Mark, but yeah, I feel much better now. :bleh:

It's pretty hard to get bad pics in awesome terrain like that. I'm amazed how many came out so good. I'm only about half way through by the way, but it'll be a few days before I get them all sorted. Crazy week. :apint:

Damn right, I've just been sorting thru mine to edit some out but even (especially) the blurry ones looked awesome so I left them all in.

Fellas,

Thanks for the comments and thanks for the camaraderie on the ride and the barrage of awesome photos that have been posted. It certainly was awesome terrain (too awesome for the awesome AT in some places!!). Glad I could offer something back to a few in the community with access to this otherwise closed area. It's hard to keep everyone happy, but hopefully most people got something out of the diverse experience we had!

I'll drop Kiwirider a line and see if they want to do an article on it...

Cheers again, Matt / Buggs

I have posted a few videos of the ride, these are RAW basically unedited. Because of the HD format, the computer has trouble rendering, but these look good and captures the 'moment'so to speak. :)

lucky it was last weekend and not this one weather wise....its fairly damp in HB at present! on the bright side a little less dust would have been welcome, the clay sections would have been interesting to negotiate in the rain

I'm just uploading higher res shots to the photo site in my signature 'Barts Photos'. You'll find them under 'WAR 2011'. There are heaps of extra ones.

If anyone wants even higher res, let me know.

I haven't sorted out the Sunday photos yet. It's been one of those weeks.

Yep, great pics Bart! That tank was at the back of the anti-armour range we went past on the Sunday just before the dam. That shot would have been zoomed way in.

I've had a couple of requests for full res pictures from the ride. With shit weather predicted for the next couple of days, I'll troll through ALL the pics properly (there are quite a few that I've only glanced at). There are heaps of good ones that haven't been posted anywhere yet.

Flick me $10 to cover p&p and I'll send out discs with full res pics of the whole ride. There should be around 300ish. PM me if interested.

P.S I've priced out postage at about $5, then there's the price of the discs, so the other couple of bucks is a donation. :apint:
