View Full Version : KB access via mobile?

I want to get an idea of how many members use mobiles to access KB, so I can see if anything needs to be done to improve mobile access.

The current options to access KB via mobile are:

Full Site. No modification of the site layout.
Mobile Style. A much simpler style which uses less data usage and is designed for small screens, but leaves out many features.
Tapatalk (http://www.tapatalk.com/). An app designed to provide a simpler interface to different forums software, but is not free.

Many sites (including vBulletin (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vbulletin.vbulletin)) have developed their own apps to enable users to access their sites instead of using a mobile browser. So this may be an option in the future.

I tried the mobile style and didn't like it ... so choose to stick with full site.

I was initially using the full site on my smart phone and it was a real bastard to use properly. Tapatalk is superb - very very easy with most of the functionality of the normal site and a few other features like showing you how active the threads are that you are participating in...

I thoroughly recommend giving tapatalk a go if you have a smart phone.

Agreed. Mobile style on most sites looks arse. Much prefer the full site.

I use Tapatalk myself, I find it faster/easier to use on a cellphone than full/mobile site.

I occasionally view kiwibiker via my iphone but find the small screen a pita to look at for long (not to mention the enlarging etc. to read details).
So my response is pretty much I stick to using the computer for KB and can't really offer any suggestions as to how to improve it for mobile phones. When I do use the phone to access it I much prefer the full site version.

Access to full site via iPhone is a pain in the $&#* as screen is too small, the full site is great to use on the iPad though and hardly ever use PC these days.

Tapatalk is good, use it on my iPod Touch. I do find that it is prone to crashing though, especially when the treads are large or contain a lot of attachments.

I use the iPad occasionally but it isn't really successful. I can't see any forums above "sportsbikes".

But that's not the biggest piss-off I currently have with the iPad.:crybaby:

But the iPad rocks, I use it constantly for web browsing.
KB on the iPad works perfectly.

I just wish it would embed vids, or at least the link of the vid.

I used the mobile version on my phone but buttons and layout went all rumble in the jungle bananas. So I stick with full site. And yes I do access via mobile quite frequently.

Usually on the phone but otherwise it's the iPad/iPhone/iPod and nearly always the full site. I've never looked at the Tapatalk stuff and I can never find the 'last post' button on the mobile site.

I use tablet, android, and big c...the android using either mobile or opera full site is a rather hit and miss affair
the mobile is easier to read though......

I've used the mobile skin a few times but it was a bit naff. Didn't have a lot of the stuff I wanted. The screen on my phone is pretty decent so the full site isn't actually that bad. Just downloading Tapatalk now to give it a go but to be honest I only looked at the forum mobile rarely.

I found mobile style good on my phone (Nokia 6120c), but was never able to upload a photo .... I cannot remember if photo uploads were possible with the mobile style, or whether the full site was required. And right now cannot be arsed going to find out. Will leave it in the Lap of the Kiwibiker Website Gods.

Last time I tried, Tapatalk was in beta for BB, tried, but it was a pain to use, crashed, etc. May have gone out of beta by now. Found I couldn't make posts over a certain length, trying to cancel exited out of Tapatalk etc.

Spank, over the years, the best was before the big site upgrade, you had a mobile style, it was very basic, but wicked fast, easy to use, etc. There's simply too much content in some pages to work (even in mobile style) cleanly on phones, especially trying to navigate through blogs and groups. The panes auto-width, but there are about 3-4 pains, so barely any width gets allocated to each pane (so you can't see much text).

Tried using Mobile Style after the big upgrade, it was slow to use, but worked. Didn't see much point in it, hard to use new posts, so have reverted to only reading KB while on a PC. Full site is almost impossible to use on a mobile because it's slow.
