View Full Version : Wow... cars are boring...

G'day all,

After my frolicking around on the slopes in Canada for 5 months, I've been driving my old man's Peugeout 406 Hdi around the city and beyond since I got back in April. Beautiful car, great manual to drive with some decent turbo diesel grunt - not to mention the thing went a good 1,200km on a tank, getting 4.9L per 100km! Now the weather has been getting better and better, and I've been awfully jealous of every bike I've seen on the road or parked up, salivating from the seat of my tractor car... That was until the car died. The clutch fully shagged itself and we're selling it as is.

Time for car shopping methinks, but after spending hours trawling trademe I find myself completely uninterested... Any car that I could want is either friggen expensive as crap or costs a fortune to run. Every other car just seems like shitty plastics encaging a crappy interior with a shoddy driving experience. Yet every single bike I look at, no matter how big or small, new or old, I just crave. :headbang:

Who could have thought that buying a new car could be so boring...

I would love to buy a new bike and could buy one in an instant, god I wish I could grab my gixxer 750 back . But I live 4km from work, there are some decent hills but it's walkable in 40min and runnable in 15min... drivable in 5min. Having to gear up and warm up the bike seems like a waste for such a commute, not to mention zipping down to the local for a box of beer. If I still lived in Karaka I'd buy a bike in an instant for commuting, but when I live so central, is there a point??

Can anybody save me and give me reasons for buying a bike or fill me in on some great cars for under 12k??? Mmm tempted to buy a bike even just for the summer, the market's so cheap... but leathers on top of a shirt, for a 4km ride... :(

What do I do?!?! :Oi:

And no, I don't want to wake up 30mins early to take it for a scenic commute each morning!!!!

As for wearing leathers over your work clothes, done that before myself. Some of the clothes you can leave at work, some can wear under your leathers no problem.

Yeah but not one ten years old with 328,000km on the clock

Been quoted over 2k just for a flywheel... But yeah if we wanna have a real look then the whole gearbox is gotta come out etc and once I've paid for all the labour we might just still be back at square one... think I'd prefer to leave someone else to it

On the other hand, yeah it's on TM for 2k so somebody could get a great deal if it's an easy fix

Do you need a car?
Do you need a bike?

If the realistic answer to both is no, then get a bike for putting around in.
You can always walk or bus to work most days, take the bike on the occasional day, take the long way home, and spend the weekend getting lost. Now that I know how much fun bikes are, I'd go nuts if I didnt have one to ride.

Mmm I like your thoughts...

Do I need a car? Technically, no, my girl has a car that we're looking at upgrading soon anyway.

Do I need a bike? Well again, no, but I do need SOMETHING to get around on.

So I don't NEED a specific form of transport, just A form of private transport...

These days my sports bike has 4 wheels, a stereo and air con. On the Akaroa hill road propper I find the sports bikes a bit slower than I would like. However when you get onto the sweeping roads going there the bikes just have such a enormous power to weight its impossible to keep up with them and they kick ass.

Just bought one for mrs, perfect on a day that would be nice for the bike but have too much gear to cart, just drop the top and you don't feel like your stuck in a cage.

They are so small and nippy you'd be surprised how quickly you can get through traffic or pass on the open road. I never tire of experiencing the amazing steering and handling. 130hp might not seem a lot but you rarely want more.

Still considering it... Car is probably worth like 4k or so when running... if the flywheel is shagged then it's over 2k just for the part, nevermind the clutch kit + hours of labour.

Problem is we won't know exactly what's wrong until the whole gearbox is taken out, and once you've gone that far...

If you're really against moving house ( in order to justify riding to work) how bout changing jobs? There's plenty on the north shore? That would be a decent commute from town and you can't cycle over the bridge so there's another reason you need a bike! Done!

This is why I loved my 300zx. In summer weather you could take off the targa tops, 3l v6 manual goodness, and on a windy road or a trackday you had a grin a mile wide. Using anything other than a bike after that would have been depressing.

She has loved that, and I'd probably just get her another if I could find it, but low mileage unmolested ones are hard to come by it would seem

. Failing that, it's a matter of picking something, but like you I find them all pretty uninspiring. There are only two other sports cars I'd want and they are, of course! the NSX and also the S2000. Unfortunately you can't get either of them for the $5400 I paid for the MX5... :bye:

Friend had one. No torque at all. 5th gear on the motorway at 100 km/hr with foot to the floor, would accellerate at a glacial pace. Was fine if you revved the tits off it, but he would regularly see 250 km out of a full tank. Paying $140 odd to full it got old pretty quickly.
In saying that, I did like the car.

I guess ours isn't really a sports car, given that it's front drive an has 4ish seats, but I figured $2k for a eurojunk ragtop with 83k's on it was worth a giggle.

I'd never considered that, might be worth a look... saves me getting stuck with the shitter later; I assume once she has driven it for a while she'll see why I'm lukewarm on the idea of one.
