Hi all I have recently gained access to the kart track at Edgecumbe ( about 20 kms from Whakatane) to run buckets. Very low key at the moment ,just three of us having a play however the kart club are happy to let us run meetings there if we are keen !!!
Spoke to Steve yesterday about this and no doubt more will come of it.
In the meantime the kart club have invited us to join their Christmas meet on Dec. 17
won`t be huge track time but will be a cheap day out.

Anyone keen ??

Well done, Top marks !

Just make sure you have good nylon, catch cans and quiet bikes. Its really hard to get use of kart tracks and easy to lose it.

YES keen as beans!!

As Henk said AMCC meet that weekend, but it is only a fun day.

If you could come up with a little bit more info for us to make a decision to come in december that would be great.

I understand it's a kart meet, but, how much track time are we looking at? 1 10 min session? or a few 20min sessions or what.
How much to enter for the day?
Gates open at?
Racing starts at?
Ect

But yes you will get lots of intrest from us (bucketeers), especially if you can wrangle us access to the track for a whole day or weekend to run our own meetings without the karts.

I'm sure we can get a group of us to come show what we are all about.
My wife and I are keen to come in December and run depending on some details.

Sign on would be at 9:00 am
No engines started before 10:00 am
We will get four ten lap races plus a final race of at least ten laps ( practise runs before racing starts ontop of this)

Nay not sound like much running but ten laps hard out might be enough for a start , and we need to fit in with the Karts on this occasion.

Cost will be $25 for the day

Yep agree with Koba, thats a lot more track time than I was expecting to get and cheap too.

Well after talking to Shona put us down for two riders confirmed.

We will prob head near there on friday night after work as we have a place to stay at Pukehina about 1/2 an hour away.

Looking forward to it!!

So who else is keen to come from Auckland?
should be able to put some people up for accomodation the night before about 1/2 hr away.

Would love to, but next time. We've missed some Mt Welly meets this year (could only be one, but seems haven't ridden there for yonks), so don't want to miss the fun day.
Sheesh, it's been months since I've been riding with Shona, starting to think I'll need to get onto her to sort her road bike out and head down there to go for a ride with her over summer, if she's not keen on playing buckets with me.

Hi Clivoris, be good if you can make it work. You will need an easy-up as the pit area is also the car park and the only sealed area ( apart from the track ) is the dummy grid which is a fuel/oil free zone.

thanks

Any part of the bike that MAY touch the track in the event of a crash must be prevented from doing so or covered in nylon (or similar slippery non track gouging material).

General points of contact are axles, handle bars, footpegs.

It is all about protecting the surface of the kart track to ensure continued use of these great facilities.

Henk & I are booked into the Awakeri hot pools Saturday night, so all going well, we're starters.

AC3_Snow - you need to bring Mel down for some practice, if you can both book time off work. Just hope the weather's like last weekend and not today.

Sidwyz - it's not that far from you, can you and Shona come along, even for a day? (nah, I still don't know where I'm going, but if I did, I'd be worried). What do I know about Edgecumbe? It's got a mount, which you can see from the Tarawera 100 start (talking years back), it had a big earthquake which left a huge crack in the ground, which isn't the kart track, and it's somewhere I've never been. Should be fun.

The track is longer than Mt Welly, but shorter than Roy's Hill and probably Kaitoke (can't remember the length of Kaitoke).

Thank you Farmaken for organising this. Oh, what are the fees for the weekend? hehe, only recently worked out who you were and now it seems so obvious lol

Why? Te Puke was awesome:woohoo:
Because they look like they're only 5 minutes apart.
Had a look on youtube and the track may not be as big or as fast as I thought from looking at google maps, but it does have run off!
I might be soft but TePuke felt like a disaster waiting to happen, there was no where to go if you got it wrong. The fact it was wet last time we raced there made it safer in my mind as it kept all out speeds down, like wise the chicane that I was so opposed to at the time (30hp needs straights not chicanes) also made it safer for the same reason, no one was going to try and force a pass through there in the wet. TePuke felt easy on the FXR, it felt plain dangerous on the GP125

Henk
3rd July 2012, 15:42
Kel

I take it you didn't ride Te Puke on the Saturday, it was dry, hot, fast and an absolute hoot. Our biggest concern on Saturday night was what we were going to do to stop our tyres falling to bits.

Pumba
3rd July 2012, 15:59
I will admit when I walked the track the first time it was a concern of mine the perceived lack of runoff, but racing the track it personally felt plenty safe enough. The fences/cliffs are close in places, (no worse than tamuranui) but not where you will hit them when you come off (or if you do you were doing something stupid that was never going to work and you deserved to hit them anyway).

What it did lack was passing options. But I also loved it in that respect.

Given the location maybe a possibility for a double header weekend. Saturday at Te Puke, Sunday at Edgecome.

(actually ignore me that just sounds like all sorts of trouble to organise)

Are motards welcome or strictly buckets only?

Hope you had a good holiday, you've missed some primo weather (if cold).

No idea how many are turning up, AC3_Snow and Captian_Soup are meant to turn up, with Mel in tow, but they've been quiet and I was too anti-social to be bothered going to Captian's birthday party (sorry, I know you didn't miss me abusing you, but I'll make up for it next time, promise).

Awesome, means a much more pleasant hour of the day to start the drive down than I was intending. Suggest an earlyish start to the day on Sunday so people can leave to get home at a decent hour and because I think the weather is going to get a bit crap in the afternoon, not that this will be a huge issue, just throw on the wets.

See you Saturday

Captian and AC3 are non-starters (AC3's worried about the weather, gay). So it'll be Farmaken, Henk, Mike (I'm assuming he'll be there), and me. I hope some others turn up as well (sorry forgot the names of those in the thread mentioning they're looking at turning up).

Well that was interesting. In half a day Saturday I burnt about as much fuel as a weekend at Mt Welly, cool track that took a bit of time to get my head around, some of the corners that look like they should be fast are slow and some others that can be taken way faster that I thought at first.
This morning in the wet I couldn't believe how grippy it is, shouldn't be much difference in lap times wet and dry. Shame it rained to be honest, I would have liked to run in the opposite direction for a bit of a laugh but as it was I was starting to get a bit keen for the conditions when we called it quits.

Thanks again for the guys that organised this, if you get racing up and running down there we'll definitely be in for a trip down a couple of times a year.

Thank you for organising it. It was a shame (???) the weather deterred others from coming along, but it was great having so much track time. I felt like I was getting the hang of some of the corners on my last session out. I hadn't expected much, as I'm not great with getting anything out of practice and don't enjoy it because of that. When we had the laptimers on yesterday (they don't like the wet, so couldn't use them today), what I found interesting was a couple of laps per session would be bang on the same time. It'd just be two back-to-back, so my riding, at times, would be consistent.

It's good to see that some of the locals are keen and it'll be great to have another area we can hopefully head to in the quiet Auckland patches.

Thanks again Farmaken for a great time :) We'll be back :)

Thanks Ken! What a brilliant day, Ken and I had some big battles with it being 2 wins each I think?
With the small group it was cool not having timing or a scheduled grid position so the races were always really exciting. There was also quite a bunch of people watching and enjoying.

The track is awesomely fun. Very fast for most of it and a really grippy surface having been recently resurfaced. No one performed an up-close inspection of the tarmac though so the jury cannot make any further comment.

Keen to get back there!

Awesome weekend away, thanks again for Ken for jacking this up.
Neat track, I almost had my head around 90% of it by the time we stopped racing for the day, the set of right handers that turns into a triple apex job with varying cambers had me in fifth by the last race! bumpy and scary.
The reverse direction test run at the end of the day was interesting, Tim, Craig and Kamil all loved, it just scared the bejesus out of me.
Really nice new surface that got changed to make it less grippy, still as grippy as hell.
Definitely going to try and slide this one into the NI series next year if we can. The pools at Awakeri are good for a soak as well.
