Hi,
Just a newbie question.
I received a renewal of motor vehicle licence recently and I'm not going to use my bike for a long time.
so about the renewal fee, do I have to return the plate in order to avoid the renewal fee or do I just leave this until the due date expires.
It is best to ask to the post office or AA but since it's too late I have to ask here.

Put the registration on hold. Unless the rules have changed you dont have to return the plate and the minimum period on hold is three months.

What If I decide not to use the bike more than 5 months?

you go to the land transports web site and put the bike on restoration hold
it will cost you nothing
if you don't, they can, after 3 mths charge backdated reg fees.
you can keep you bike on hold for as long as you like and keep the plates
they will post you a renewal form every twelve mths when its due.
you can use the bike any time after the first 3 mths, by registering it , and the reg wil start from that day
if you reg before the first 3 mths they will back date it to the last expiry date
the min reg period I think is one mths reg
others may post you a link to the relevant page
to put your bike into storage for a long period.
the most important being give it a fresh oil change and drain the fuel tank and fuel bowls.
changing the oil will stop any moisture contained in the oil evaporating and rusting up the internals of your enginem
draining the fuel will stop it going bad, and fouling your carburation jets.
removal of the battery is also wise

Can I do this at the AA? because I went to the http://www.nzta.govt.nz/ website but I couldn't find the link to the restoration hold page.

Oh never mind. I think I found it. it says "If you're not going to use your vehicle on the road for at least three months, you can apply for a temporary exemption from the requirement to continually license your vehicle. The maximum exemption period is 12 months, but you can apply for subsequent exemptions."
so thanks for your comment. :)
