View Full Version : Dirt biking in Wellington, worth it?

I live in brooklyn and see numerous dirt bikers going up to the wind turbine each weekend. Our house has no room for a trailer so if I bought a bike it would only get a thrashing up there and down to red rocks. Can anyone enlighten me as to how many trials and rides there are up there and if after a few hours ill get bored. Also as a note does anyone know where I can rent a dirt bike to test the water?

If you have a push bike it could be worth giving that a go.

Firstly, usually dirt-biking is pretty addictive :headbang:

It's a LOT of fun and if you are into adrenaline sports you will probably get a real kick out of it.
Long Gully (wind turbine farm area) is pretty fun. It's $20 and works on a trust system but you can go anywhere on the farm and/or play on the motocross track.
We ride up there a lot and we tootle around all sorts of tracks. You can often find new places to play and different directions to go in.

Not owning a trailer isn't too hard to get around if you are a decent person and make friends with some of the locals like us.
We have a group of about 18 riders now and we ride most weekends. We also do most of the organised rides and there are 6 lots of us who live in Brooklyn with 3 vans, 3 utes and 3 trailers between us - most of us take up 1-2 bikes each ride but two of the trailers can take 3 bikes and the vans can take 2 inside (plus two can take bikes inside and trailers) so there is always room for extra bikes and bodies and we always convoy.

The only thing is that you do want to get a decent bike if you are going to trail ride - particularly if you are riding up and down to Brooklyn.
Last thing you would want is to have to push it all the way home....
And same on trail rides. Pushing it sucks so finding a bike that's in decent condition and making sure you keep up the maintenance on it is important.
We have a couple of bike mechanics in our group which helps and they are always happy to help out if things go wrong.
We have a tyre machine setup for motorbike tyres and a good toolbox of bike tools including fork seal drivers... tyre cutters... stands... the boys do all our maintenance/upgrades here.

We have a heck of a lot of fun out on the bikes and we all love it, but we've all come from either moto or other adrenaline sport backgrounds. It's a rush and I wouldn't quit for the world now!

lol

we don't discriminate by level!

We do all the trail rides which are a great way to start - loads of friendly people to help out and you can ride at whatever pace you like.
I'm probably mid-level.... boys are fast, but there's always someone faster haha
Happy to do a couple of slow loops whenever though.

Cool! Do you have transport?

Pop me a PM if you like. I think the next ride we are doing is Tangi - Glen Oroua (http://silverbullet.co.nz/event.php?id=12092).

My Dad has a L300 swb van it can just fit two bikes in it. Only local stuff for now. Kiwi Biker says not enough involvement to do a pm.

haha keep posting here and get ya numbers up then!
Go dredge some stuff up hahaha

We don't do a hang of a lot locally. The odd tip up to Long Gully, but there's just not too much around here to do that's not boring after five minutes.
You should talk to your Dad about getting to the organised rides. They really are fantastic fun and the best thing is all the support there is available.
There are marshalls out on the trails to help, most of the riding folk are friendly as and always willing to lend a hand where needed, and you get the benefits of one way trails, so no risk of head on's... as well as heaps of variation on the ride. You get all sorts, sand, dirt, mud, clay, up's, downs, grass... all sorts.
And dedicated kids tracks if you want to get your confidence up first.
Totally worth the early starts and the bit of a drive to get there.

We usually convoy up, meeting at Mana BP for fuel and breakfast. And ride roughly as a group :)

Sadly there is no devils staircase anymore, the regional council decided to bulldoze it.

I think they want to be able to send a quad around easily for search and rescue, so the rock garden might be next.

Apologies for re-opening an historic thread, but I've read elsewhere (at wmtbc.org.nz) that Long Gully is no longer open for mountain bikes, and I guess this must also apply to motorbikes. Can anyone confirm that this is the case? Thanks.

I don't know if it's still open but Long Gully's contact phone no. used to be 027 442 7334.
