Ok. Here is a chance to tell others about how you purchase your bike? Do you and your partner make a collective decision in what bike, type price etc? Do you take your partner along? Or do you just show up with the new aquisition and say, hi honey look at what I got?
Do you ask permission before you purchase? Or is it the old "It's easier to ask for forgivness then permission" thingy?

I know of couple of mates who went in to get their bike serviced and turned up at home with a new one. Or another one I know who went in to the shop to get new pair of winter gloves and came back with a new bike. AND to make matters worse, forgot to buy the gloves he went in to purchase in the first place.

Come on, come clean, who really makes all the decisions when it comes to buying your new bike? You or really your partner?

I'm blessed, my gf loves being on the back of my "big" bike to the point she now has her own. She was also happy for me to get an off roader instead of a man telly.:eek5:

We talked long & hard about getting her a bike, had a couple of jaunts off road on wee hire bikes & then discussed what would be most appropriate for her to learn on. So far, so good.

I will admit to feeling trepidation as she gets closer to her learners & getting on the road. Spending time getting her confident & capable has made me very aware of how much you need to know to be safe...

So, yeah, whatever I want as long as I pay. She has her eye on a Speed Triple for the future:yes: which will really put the cat amongst the pigeons. She might be the one coming home with an unexpected purchase. :woohoo:

We pool money for bills, holidays etc. Bar that, our money is our own. If I want to buy a bike, or splurge on some nice new kit, that's down to me. All she wants is a bike with a comfortable pillion. And perhaps something with a working neutral light so she doesnt accidentally drop it

Far better to beg for forgiveness than plead for permission.
It's turning into a bit of a tradition, every time my wife goes away on a school camp, I upgrade my Ride(s).
We discuss it afterwards.:innocent:

I just ask what colour our new bike should be and she says yes dear!

A friend of mine, took his wifes BMW from her work, traded it in on a new one and put the new car back in her car park at work without telling her any thing, he just left the keys in reception.

Prior to my latest purchase the bike I had was becoming unreliable so the discussion went,
Me: [Hands covered in grease and blood from the latest repair attempt] I need a new bike.
Her: How much?
Me: No more than $10k
Her: Okay just don’t get another unreliable one
Me: Okay
Then I and went and spent $1k over
The pleasure I get from riding the bike has long out lasted her displeasure at the over spend.

Almost a similar story here but in my case it went like this:

Me: [Hands covered in grease and blood from the latest repair attempt] I need a new bike.
Her: how much?
Me: no more than $10k
Her: ok just don’t get another unreliable one
Me: ok

Salesman: so you've got 10k, how about this 11k bike? Go on, here's the keys.
Me: (after riding it) I want it.
Salesman: awesome! Let me get the paperwork
Me: (after cooling down from excitement of testing new bike) hang on, I'd better check with the wife
Salesman: :(

The next day...
Salesman: (calling my phone) so what did she say?
Me: she said nuh-uh
Salesman: :(

Later that day:
Salesman: (calling my phone again) we got another bike here for 12k that I didn't show you, but it only owes us X on trade and it's almost winter so the boss says you can have it for 10k
Me: cool, I'm on my way.
Me: (after riding it) I want it.
Salesman: :)
Me: :)
Wife: :)

She's also a pretty good egg.

Something similar happened in our house many years ago, though there was no WTF, it was more like  Here we go, here we go, here we go!

I tease Maha endlessly about his bike buying month, I will have to stop now as he broke the mould with the latest purchase.

We dont consult about whether we should, though we do a little bit. It is more about look what I found, I really want it, so I am going to buy it  By then the excitement has become mutual and it is all over.

Yes agree if you meet someone who shares the interest is good. And re one lifetime can relate to that, when I did the relay for life in 2009,the nurse at the cancer tent mentioned bikes,so I asked what they rode, turned out they both bought C50 Suzukis a couple of years earlier when they were on special, both of them had ridden, and had cash,no kids at home and as she said had seen to many of the patients die,so decided to just do it,they rode a few bikes, and both like the cruiser style, and although they both mostly rode in summer also spent their holidays on the bikes. She said they got grief from colleagues, family etc,but thought if we die on the road so be it,and I said that was my attitude, well hope not to die on the road, but more life is precious do it.

And the folks I/we had/have met from kiwibiker and other groups has been awesome, can honestly say have not met anyone I have disliked through the bike scene, although a couple from rides back in the naki were tossers, they weren't part of any group here, but just idiots on Tuesday rides, and we only did one as they were based from Stratford at the time.So yep it is enjoyable the comradeship.

But at what cost? some mentioned a spa pool....mate thats only the tip of the berg

I sold my Dirt bike when I left Aussie....two years later I was in the Duc dealer drooling over an S4....I had gone in for a look at the Britten...My wife walked in behind me and said " we can afford it, go on, buy it"

A couple of years later I was egging for a new bike and the street fighter was released....when for a ride and it was not me so bought the last of the S4Rs....You work hard she said you deserve it. And to her credit she did some long rides on the postage stamp pillian seat ...S4 traded in.

Then the MTS1200 came up, and all it took was for her to glance the big wide pillian seat and it was ours.

I should mention there has also been a 1098S tricolore added to the fleet with her endorsment and the trade off was not too bad.

My Wife is relatively keen for me to get a bike, but we have so many demands for money to look after our family that I couldn't bring myself to spend the money. Maybe when the bike is getting expensive to look after from age, or we (can't imagine it) have plenty of cash to spare.

My first bike, a ZXR250 just turned up. However, my now wife was then only my girlfriend, so level of commitment was slightly different. I have bought and sold numerous bikes sub $2k without her being told, but when it comes time to make decent purchases, I run it by her, and she in return of the courtesy, has never said no. 5 years ago when I bought my first decent bike, K5 GSXR 600, she was very supportive even though she doesn't like me riding bikes.

This year was the first year I got an ultimatum. I want to buy this http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/audi/auction-420206933.htm OR this http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/audi/auction-402119287.htm but I also want to buy one of these http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-418214346.htm . I got told that I can only have one, and that I have to choose, unless I work out a way to make more money.

I find that if I involve my wife in the buying decision, I ultimately get much more support than if I just went out and did what I want. I also believe that it would be rather disrespectful for me to make unilateral decisions regarding out finances as my wife earns a large chunk of our income and deserves more respect than that.

My first real dirtbike was discussed, studied, worked out what was best for me, and went from there. I knew the KX80 and RM80 were the most learner-friendly in the range, so bought a YZ80. Husband took it for a test ride, I just smirked, and once the bike was on the trailer, commented that I didn't think he'd let me buy it as the front wheel hadn't hit the ground on the test ride. He hadn't realised that. Lots of fun.

We generally talk about what bike we want next and if either of us can come up with something within the budget, go for it. We also try to take it turn about, but I sometimes get greedy and end up with a couple of changes before his turn. Pillion seat isn't a deal breaker, as for the odd time I go on the back, I reckon it's more important he finds something he likes riding.

Then again, we're both bike nuts, so it's all good.

When I first broached the subject of a bike, I said our son said I should get a bike. The response was, "You could have had a bike when you were younger!" I hadn't cos I felt it was selfish to go off riding and leaving her looking after the 5 kids. So much for considering others.

The day she left me I bought a bike. My new partner loves bikes, so our first task together is to go shopping for gear for her.

Bring it on!

I discuss the bike I want and get Mr Hellokitty's opinion and then I do what I want...... he is the same. I take his advice as he is more knowledgable than me and more experienced.
His advice of ignoring the colour (I am such a girl) and buying the best example of the bike I wanted (in the ugly colour) was one I did listen to, and we got the bike pianted the colour I wanted and I love my bike!
We would never stop each other buying what we really wanted - the same goes for cars - I have a yellow nana-mobile and he has a westy-bogan car.

Found the bike, was good two up, easy to ride long distance and could carry luggage with no issue, parts where easily available, servicing was quick and easy.
A good all rounder that I could commute on and still have some fun with on weekends and that wasn’t going to leave me broke.
And wifey could reach the ground and ride it too.

Oh but the Daytona…
How it called to me…

Well my experience isn’t exactly the norm….

I fell in love with Vicki the second I saw her. Tragic but true – a little pop went off in my head and said ‘This is the woman you are going to marry’… We had both just returned for overseas and I was flat arse broke so I had to stalk her for a while before eventually wearing her down and eventually we got hitched. To fund the ring I had to sell a Rickman Metisse that was going to be my forever bike.

Of course we were at it like rabbits and before we had a house we had a family so we ended up playing financial catch up (still am) and motorcycles were cheap and utilitarian. The $75 TS250 (arrived in 3 boxes) was a stalwart provider of commuter transport for a few years. That was so exciting we soon had 3 kids and a half renovated 100 year old house.

Finally the house was finished except for the carpets which we had been quoted $6,000, exactly what was in the bank. Lots of overtime was being done and life was getting easier. We were taking one of the last loads of building rubble to the tip behind our old Triumph 2.5 TC and we drove past Bland Brothers. Outside was the 1970 Trophy (TR6C) with a sticker of $4,900. I said to the child bride, ‘Once we get the house sorted and a few bucks together I’m going to find myself one of those high pipe Trophies…..

We dropped off our crap and I swept out the trailer and Vicki announced – ‘I’ll drive home, its about time I drove with a trailer’. I kind though wtf?? She HATES driving with trailers etc… Anyway she drove back past Blands and pulls a U turn in front of the store (not quite a Blues Brothers one but close….) She turns to me and tells me ‘Go and but that bike, you may not ever find another one and we can wait for carpet’…..

Tell you what – we have had that bike for 25 plus years and just celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary. Selling that Rickman was the best investment I ever made….
