View Full Version : EEEEE - Waikaremoana Dec 3rd/4th

EEEEEh? I hear you say...
Of course it's the Extremely laidback Excellent Earlysummer Eastern Expedition
It's a cruisy ride going through Waikaremoana and a few other interesting backroads, with plenty of time to stop and take photos, or to do some exploring. We will be following some of the same territory as the MMMMM, but without the snow, and without Clint constantly reminding everyone to keep moving before it gets dark. :chase:
The general plan goes something like this:
Camp at Mangamate Waterfall (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/east-coast/te-urewera/mangamate/) on Friday night - it's a DOC campsite, and is $6 per night. Bring something for dinner, and for breakfast (this time I won't force you to cook if you don't want to :innocent:) People are welcome to meet up with us at Clint's place at Rotoiti for the ride to Mangamate.
Alternatively, meet us at the Minginui road turnoff on SH38 on Saturday morning (at a currently-unspecified time).
We'll cruise through to Waikaremoana, stopping to look at the scenery and taking lots of photos, and will probably explore up some side roads along the way.
Saturday night we'll stay at the Tiniroto Tavern (http://www.lakefalls.co.nz/tiniroto/id18.htm) (06 863 7019) They have a few rooms in the pub, and have camping sites across the road. Clint and I will be camping, because I've planned ahead and booked fine weather for the weekend  Meals will be available at the pub on Saturday evening. Give them a call and sort yourself out for accommodation. They don't have a lot of rooms in the pub, so be prepared to share if the ride becomes popular. I forgot to check if the pub does breakfast. If you don't like being hungry, it might pay to ask when you phone them.
We don't have any firm plans for Sunday - Clint and I will be heading back towards Rotoiti via a scenic route, either doing some exploring along the way, or continuing to follow parts of the MMMMM route.
Feel free to sign yourselves up on the Calendar here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2926&day=2011-11-2)

Sounds good. I might turn up at Runnytoetoe for the important drinky bits.
Sadly the museum live day has moved to Dec 10/11th.
However the museum will still be open, you just won't get to see things running.

Hmm I was thinking of just meeting you in at Tiniroto...
but now I'm thinking about coming through to Rotovegas and staying the night on the Friday. And ride with you through to Tiniroto and leaving you on the Saturday night.
I have no idea what this smiley means but they're cooler than on ADVrider... so I'm just gonna go right on ahead there and use it :doobey:

Depending on timing we could probably meet you en route to Mangamate on the Friday (Te Teko?) to save you backtracking from Clint's place. No idea what time we'll be heading out on Friday, I'm on Jury Duty that week, so my ability to sneak off early on Friday afternoon may be compromised. We will be in touch

At this stage I plan to come down friday during the day and meet up with the group somewhere near Rotorua for the friday afternoon/evening trip to camp site number 1.
Looking forward to this ride, might even fit my racks to the bike as I plan to be camping both nights, so will need plenty of gear.

Saturday morning meetup plan...
For those not camping on Friday night, meet us at the Mangamate Waterfall Campsite (signposted off Minginui Rd, just before Minginui village) at 9.45, for 10am departure. Or turn up a little earlier if you want us to brew you a coffee :sunny:
Chris - Peet has expressed a preference for not coming camping :oi-grr: so it's up to you what you bring for the dinner collaboration.

Rosie is on jury service this week which rules out an early knockoff for us, so we're planning to head off from my place 5:30. It's about 1.5 hrs to the camp so we'll still get there with plenty of daylight left for pitching tents & cooking dinner. If you've got the whole day to burn & want to head out earlier & do some exploring around Whirinaki let me know & I'll point you in the direction of a few easy tracks.
Pomgolian: we'll share our venison sandwiches if you turn up with a trout entree! Let me know if you need any directions through the forest, Wade probably has a GPS track anyway.

Looks like I shall be tied up most of Friday, so getting down for 5:30 will be just about perfect. I will probably end up main roading it (with my new screen that does not seem as horrible as it once did), might duck down Leslie/Cecil road see if I can complete that one if I have time.

Trial is going until Tuesday (at least), so I should be finishing at 5-ish tomorrow. If I'm not at yours by 5.30, you are welcome to head off, and I'll (try to) catch up.

Kaingaroa is a very large forest. In this particular case; getting lost is not fun.
Phil: We will be leaving the Mangamate Campsite (signposted off Minginui Road, just before Minginui village) at 10ish. From there we'll go back to SH 38, then onwards to Waikaremoana.

pretty pretty!
Need to get Max Gravelly at some stage soon, but he's been doing stirling public service duty doing Marathons, Elite Triatlons and this weekend, elite cycle races.

Great pics Chris, it certainly was nice doing a relaxed pace & having time to faff around with the cameras a bit, investigate local history etc.

Indeed, been too long since we've seen you on a ride! Just remember to notify the AA a couple of days in advance if you're going through the Motu... ... (sorry:devil2:)

The Tuhoe say that the rain is a blessing... we were certainly blessed at the start of the Waikaremoana road

The weather improved as we got closer to the lake

Kiwipeet took us on a side trip to the Redoubt at Onepoto, where the local Constabulary had been persuing Te Kooti in the 1870's

From the lake we went along Ohuka Rd, which is officially still closed with a very large slip, but they have just about finished reconstructing the road, and we got through without any trouble.
It started to rain again when we got to Tiniroto, so us campers were offered use of the Tiniroto hall for the evening.
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj295/Kawa_Rosie/Kiwibiker%20rides/IMG_3294.jpg
We had a very pleasant evening at the Tiniroto Tavern, watching the Fight for Life to support local boy Shane Cameron
The next morning some of the local youngsters were keen to check out our bikes.

Peet took us for an explore up Parikanapa Rd, which should make a scenic addition to future MMMMM rides

Peet accompanied Clint, Chris and me to the general vicinity of Gisborne, then we continued along the general route of the MMMMM rides towards Matawai. Somewhere along the way we managed to mislay Chris, so he missed out on Rakauroa Rd:

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj295/Kawa_Rosie/Kiwibiker%20rides/IMG_3311.jpg
Back on the highway, we found this:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj295/Kawa_Rosie/Kiwibiker%20rides/IMG_3312.jpg
Which was kind of bizarre. Especially when I later checked on Facebook, and couldn't find its page
We met up with Chris again in Matawai. Fortunately the signposted route that he took was more direct than Rakauroa Rd, so his concerns about running out of fuel hadn't materialised.
From Matawai, it was only natural to continue down the Motu Road

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj295/Kawa_Rosie/Kiwibiker%20rides/IMG_3315.jpg
Where it started to rain again
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj295/Kawa_Rosie/Kiwibiker%20rides/IMG_3318.jpg
But the scenery was still pretty cool

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj295/Kawa_Rosie/Kiwibiker%20rides/IMG_3322.jpg
From there it started raining quite heavily, so we decided to mostly stick to the highway back to Clint's and the camera decided to stay tucked up in its drybag.

The road from SH5 to Minganui had a huge wash out - time to think another 100 kms back and around Taupo or find a way round it, followed some four wheel drive tracks through the trees & up the riverbed to the other side. Then bumped into two hunters on the other side you can just see thier van on the other side of the wash out who gave me some hints on dealing with any trouble on the otherside like keeping it pinned & dont stop !!!! Oh **** i thought.
