Has anybody else seen these around?

It's amazing to see how they promote safety on scooters, it gets worse and worse!
Might just sell my leathers and buy a few good pairs of jeans then huh.

The reality is that we're never going to get scooter riders wearing leather (to be honest, it would look a bit silly).

The frustrating part is ACC's myopic focus on safety gear being the cure for all our ills.

I attended a meeting with a woman from ACC recently where I was told that ACC's primary focus is on reducing the severity of injuries from accidents.

I said, "but wouldn't it be better to place the primary focus on reducing the accidents in the first place?"

I don't think she got it. It clearly takes too much effort to move the ambulance to the top of the cliff.

There you go the problem is in your last sentence. Your solution the ambulance wouldn't be required at all and you would place a soft, impact absorbent barrier at the top of the cliff.

Wow!:eek5:

I know of at least one person who has come off on a scooter, wearing jeans and spent over a fortnight in hospital. One of which required skin grafts.

At least it is better than shorts, but would it not have been better to show a before and after of someone on a scooter with shorts and a t-shirt and then show them grazed to the bone with a message like "got Cover?"

That makes sense of a sign I saw yesterday. I wondered why it just looked like woven cloth they were saying would protect the scooter rider, thought it might have been some new toughened cloth.

Well clearly the most effective way to avoid the costs is to deter people riding those dangerous 2 wheeled things in the first place.

Before i could afford leathers I used 2 pairs of jeans. one grips & rips & the other gives a second or two more protection. Outer big jeans could be cheapo brand.

I was testing out a scooter for a friend and had ridden there so had full leathers and back protector on, jumped on the scooter and felt really weird and then I saw myself in a shop window and couldn't stop laughing.

But leather isn't the only option, there is a range of reasonably priced textile gear available along with gloves etc...
The message just needs to be that your pitiful dress that billows in the wind won't save you sunshine.
And yes, I do agree that they need to focus on reducing the accidents in the first place, maybe when someone takes charge that has half a brain going..

I once got pulled over on my RG50 wearing my full leathers (as why would the bike size or style affect what you wear? 50k off could still rip you to bits in crap gear). I was told his police intuition told him something was wrong with this picture.

I was pretty P'd off that I was being harassed for being responsible.

yeah I was on the way to work & late as usual. Couldn't think of a piss taking remark at the time. Of course several gear changes later I thought about asking if his police intuition was telling him to set fire to his house & climb out the window & blame it on the satinists (as it was about that time that one of our, well ex, boys in blue got caught doing the insurance defraud thing cw crazy story).

Ahh, ya can't turn back find them & pull them over to give a line.

That's exactly the point we made to them, selling scooter riders the message of a one piece leather suit isn't going to work, that's what motorcyclists wear (not them!). Enclosed footwear & jeans are better than flipflops and shorts, if we can then make that draggin jeans and boots we're onto a winner.

I saw this at the bus shelter on Mayoral drive, yesterday.

So that's ACC's grand plan to reduce costs aye

Must be some sort of deal they have with Levi's :bleh:

On another note, if they want to encourage people to gear up, show some photos of people who've crashed without gear..... they do it for seatbelts, drink driving and slap them on fag packets etc

What's really annoying about all this is that they raise the levies on bikes, particularly bigger ones, and then go on an advertising campaign targeting scooter riders. Kinda like, let's take money off bike riders and spend it on scooter riders who are too stupid to realise that jandals and board shorts aren't going to save their skin. Thought the increase in levies was partly going to go to reduce bike accidents (yeah right).

I crashed about half a dozen times in my first two years of riding, all at around 50 to 60kph. All I got was minor grazing in one or two tiny spots i.e. nothing to worry about. What was I wearing? Boots, jeans, PVC jacket, gloves and helmet.

Yep. Highsided (wet tar, slip-grip) the scooter several times as a kid in shorts, t-shirt, sneakers, helmet.
Wore a hole in a sneaker once.

There are some quite graphic ones in Melbourne, showing an office type girlie in a dress, blouse, some sort of office-y jacket and work shoes and one of those funky half face helmets (no gloves either IIRC) lying on the road a wee way away from her scooter. I thought it was a good ad: because you see THAT girl, dressed THAT way everywhere.

Presumably the ad you're referring to is our version of that. I ride my scooter to work quite a bit, and usually am wearing jeans (and a proper motorcycle jacket, good gloves. full face helmet, and boots).

Until your luck runs out, I highsided on a roundabout that had the surface with the grooves cut in it and it destroyed my jeans and textile jacket, not to mention making a mess of me.

I too saw such an add recently and wondered at the insanity of it.
If scooter riders are such a problem that they spend OUR money on advertising to make them gear up seems strange to me that us ordinary motorcyclists as opposed to scooter riders don't seem to be the problem that it has been made out to be.Robbing Peter to pay Paul it seems.
I want my MSL money back and I want scooters declared "Far more dangerous than motorbikes".

I guess once we have forced scooterists to ATGATT and wear hi-viz we can focus our attention on cyclists.

my understanding was that a fixed portion of the ACC being levied on all motorbikes was going towards this safety business, $10 per bike per year or whatever. the rest of your excessive charge is (in theory at least) being used to somewhat offset the amount of money being spent on patching up people falling off their bikes during the coro GP and so on.

so complaints about 'my' money being spent on 'their' advertising seem somewhat uninformed.

while im generally dismayed by the lack of gear most scooter riders wear, some part of me rebels at the idea of no more office girls in short skirts on scooters :P

although, i did pull up at the lights the other morning next to a nice young lady on a street magic wearing close fitting gear.:heart::heart:

Who cares? Fuck scooters.

Quite a lot of people I know, all of whom own bikes bigger than 250, also own a scooter. Some of them even own mopeds.

A litre bike parked downtown on the footpath right outside the bank might attract unwanted attention. A moped may well be ignored.
After all it's waaaay smaller than those bloody mobility scooters some of my contemporaries drive...

Many (most?) of the other scooters I see in my commute are school kids. In the summer it's shorts or skirt and sandals.

Some cyclists wear riding gear and change when they get to work, but it would take a real culture change to get pubescent scooterists to do likewise. Or even for the thought to occur to the teachers, let alone the kids...
