View Full Version : Thank You Everyone

17110 new posts! I'm not going to even try! :)

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to each and every one of you. Those that thought and prayed for me, those that PM'd me, those who phoned my friends and parents and those who came to visit me in hospital (including those bringing me books, mags, loan laptops/tv's and all manner of things!) - I have so much love and respect for all of you.

I got home this Thursday evening and it's nice to be home. It is a little scary not having the safety net of 24/7 speciasilst care especially since I still feel very very unwell. Every minute I worry if I'm ok and how long I will be fine for! The drive home was scary, traffic and driving/riding make me feel very uneasy at the moment.

I don't like talking about my list of injuries at the moment (I felt rather upset after seeing my helmet last night), but I heard from many people at the hospital that I am very lucky to be alive (some didn't think I'd make it). I'm sore pretty much everywhere now and am still getting to grips with walking properly again. My right arm is in a sling and at the moment I can't move it at all. Who knows, hopefully it will heal over time. The other issue is that I still have blury / double vision that will take months to heal, hopefully. I had some heart surgery etc... but I don't like reliving all the rest so thats it for now.

Wgtn hospital were on average brilliant. Not bad food, nice room with window view. It was a little unpleasant having to loose all my dignity in terms of being washed etc... In total I think I was in hospital for almost 3 weeks and by the end was getting a little cabin fever :weird:

I'll be recovering at home for quite a long time before I think about going back to work. I'm lucky to have such a great employer too, they came too see me in hospital and told my mum I can return whenever I want, for as long as I want! Thanks guys/gals :)

I'm sure there is more, which I can add later - but at the moment I get tired very quickly so I need to go lie down for a while now
I'm also on a rather large list of medication so I'm glad I have my parents to help me out where neccessary.

Thanks again everyone, I appreciate it far beyond what words can express.

Regards,
David.

EDIT: Oh, thank you all those members of the public who stopped to help at the accident site. I'm very lucky the Ambulance was so close by, thanks to them too. And I've spokem to VTWIN many times since, but thanks again for helping at the scene. This was just "one of those things..." that happened.

Great news to hear that you are on the road to recovery. Its always hard whenever we hear of one of our own having a bad crash as it shows the rest of us how vulnerable we all are.

Keep your chin up, and hopefully it won't be too long before you are riding once again. :ride:

Welcome back Dave, we were all very worried about you. I hope everything works out the best for you, and all your injuries are only temporary. Having had a close call myself that was similar to you, I can relate a little to how you must feel. Remember you've got a full time help team here for you, that support at a time like this in your life can make all the difference.

Several people pm'ed me regarding the damage to your arm, and while I do not know the full extent of your injury if there is anything you want to talk to me about regarding your arm feel free, I'd love to be able to help in anyway I can.

Once again, good to have you back. Rest up, take it easy and look foward to getting back to normal proceedings again. Keep your head up.

Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in.

Thank Christ you're on the road to recovery, my large friend. You do realise that you owe me a beer or five for missing my party but given the circumstances, I'll shout.

We'll catch up soon mate, great to have you back.

ps: I only came to visit because I needed to make sure you weren't bluffing out of our little challenge :devil2:

Good to see you back here.

Natural to be a bit concerned about getting everything healed and sorted, but you'll find it's amaazing what the body can do in terms of repaiing itself. (Pity bikes can't repair themselves like that!)

Don't forget the mind/spirit will need a bit of TLC too, so don't be diffident about seeking it out, in whatever way works for you.

Prayers and best wishes still for the future.

This is the best news I have read all day. It is good to hear you are now home, but, you have read that so many times already. And another thing you have heard is, get better at your own pace and don't rush things, and if you want, when you get frustrated, I am sure someone will come over to your place and beat the shit out of something with a baseball bat, nothing relieves stress quite like that.

That is so good to hear you are home (your own bed!), although it will obviously be quite some time before you are back to your old self again.

I have never met you but you must be a pretty decent guy considering the level of support and care that your accident engendered amongst the members of this site. That's good enough for me to wish you all the best and hope that one day I'll get the chance to see you on a ride.

I won't say I know how you feel because I've never been in a serious accident like this, but I hope your physical injuries heal and the mental ones too - what's this talk of a Harley? Sounds like your brain must have been a little dented!

Great to have you back Dave. Very few of us here know the full extent of your injuries (nor should we- that's your call) but from what we do know, I have a feeling that I'm not the only one who is amazed at the speed of your recovery to date. It would appear that you still have a fair way to go, but if you keep going at your current rate you'll be out and and about in no time!

And your KB support net work will be with you every step of the way.

Hello and Welcome back!

Ironically was thinking about you today and how your recovery was going.

You have been on our minds of recent weeks and we've been sending you get well thoughts every day.

Regarding your surgical cuts. Tape them up with wide paper like medical tape. The aim is for the tape to take the stretch pressure and to give you tightness feedback before your cut does. This is will give the weaker cut point on your skin time to gather strength. Do this for several months, 24hrs per day changing each night during shower/bath. In the end, hopefully those cuts will look paper-thin. Any good pharmacy stocks this tape.

From personal experience, this works well on the belly but not so well on shoulders.

All the best with your healing.

Once again, thanks for all the good wishes. I've been taking it really easy over the past few days, spending only a few mins on KB :( That means there's no way I can keep up to date like I used to, at the moment anyway ;)

There is a small chance I'll have to go back to hospital for a few days to get some I.V. antibiotics. That doesn't impress me much, but I'll see if I can choose a more comfortable hospital, privte maybe (where people come instantly when you ring the bell) :wait:

Best person to chat to who has one is "Krusti's" wife....
so PM "Krusti" and find out how they handle etc...

Dave if a trike is what it takes to get you out and about on rides then I'm all for it! (Betcha everyone will want to have a go on it if you do get one!) There's a guy out on Blue Mountain Rd doing motorbike tours who has a trike as well. Maybe once you're better you can look at going out on that and see how it feels. I've got his card somewhere, or ask Mitch.

In the meantime, here's some happy happy joy joy glittery healing dust blowing your way. xx

Hiya, Dave!

I'm so glad you're on the mend, and I hope things go well for you.

If there's anything I or any other of your KiwiBiker brothers and sisters can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best wishes,

I also had some heart surgery in Welly hospital. Had the need to be washed by Nurses thing also. As a 13 year old it was a tad dwanting. Especially when my nurse was a rather young and attractive woman. She was giving me a showers and somehow ended up getting rather wet during the first shower. It was at this time it became apparent that something between my legs had a bloody mind of its own! For a 13 year old lad thats staring at a young nurse, half wet (kind of wet t-shirt scene, but she had bra & panties on) and a stiffy, feck, all I felt was bloody embarressed. She said that she would take it as a compliment, but at that time I did not know what she meant by that. Well that was 20 years ago now. Funny how the mind blocks out the negative shit and remembers the good. Hope your experience had some good also. I'm now a nurse and I'm glad that they gave me the younger female type instead :devil2:
I'm coming back down to Porirua in the last week of this month. If there is anything I can do, or anything you need brought down, give me a PM and I'll get it sorted. Will have a hospital car, so no tow bar fdor a trailer (although I could bring down the Hilux if really needed). Heal well mate.

Dave, good to see you're back online. It goes without saying that my best wishes are with you, and of course if you need anything... yada yada yada. PM me anything.

On a serious note - I work in disability claims so I feel at least partially qualified to offer my opinion (and that's all it is). Attitude will determine your recovery. There are certain physical limitations that you will have and they may be temporary or permanent, but how you choose to let those physical limitations affect you will determine your quality of life. I can't pretend to understand your position, but I have seen how different people deal with similar situations.

Don't be afraid to ask for help, and don't be afraid to share emotions. The past has happened, it cannot be changed, it is the future that lies within your control.

Jeez, and I haven't even started drinking yet!! :puke:

Thanks for the continous words of encouragement and wisdom. I can almost guarantee that I'll come on here sometime and have a moan, "cry", laugh or whatever other emotion I'm feeling. That is because you people, specifically the ones I've met and ride with, are my best friends. I'm from another country and I make friends slowly so all my friends and social interests lie here in KB.

That's why being able to ride again (or partake in KB activities) is so important to me :grouphug:

Dave...

Don't sweat it mate... And don't beat yourself up over stuff that may or maynot ever happen. It's early days...

Worst possible case is that you decide not to ride a bike again. So what. Most of us have shared more than a few miles with you and the future won't change that shared past. You are part of the family Dave, a part of our history, you are in the family photo album...

Think of it this way.. What would happen if KB folded up (for a zillion reasons)?? Would life be over, nope! Of course not...

Don't stress... Get well....

Cheers

Hmmm, feel a little overwhelmed to say anything here - esp. since I haven't met you SC.

Regardless, my dear, I'm ever so glad that you're back at home. It's really hard recovering from injury - it takes up lots of energy - so get plenty of rest. And that's physical as well as emotional/mental rest too, please don't beat yourself up internally when your body has set the pace it's going to heal at!

But just think - it IS healing. Bodies are amazing things. And when you feel like getting out on the road again - you will. I can't imagine the impact (that one too) of seeing your helmet - but it did make my eyes well up thinking about it. Take care of yourself, let others look after you (because they love you and want to!) and go easy dude.

Cheers guys, and thanks Bruce I am feeling better each day (on average). But...

I have to go back to hospital (Hutt Hospital, this time) for another operation. Going early next week and it's a tad worrying as I'm not the best candidate for anaesthetic. But I trust that I will be ok just like the other surgeries. It's for the burn / injury on my leg that isn't healing so the plastic surgeons are going to sort it out. Hopefully only a week or so this time :(

Will let you know before I go in.
Dave

I have had a couple of personal encounters with the burns and reconstructive surgery team at Hutt Hospital. They're fantastic, and I am certain they'll do a great job on/for you!
