Migration to the new server didn't go as smoothly as I hoped, but we're here. Will be on a temp domain .zyns.com for a day or so while kiwibiker.co.nz catches up with the new IP.
New server specs
XEON 4 core 2.40GHz
8GB memory
2x 500GB HDD (extra one for just the dB)

So a certain ice-cream selling member gets his own hard drive huh? I didn't think he posted all that much these days....

That's your server?! My desktop computer has better hardware than that!

My desktop computer has better hardware than that!
Servers only handle data transfer and none of the complicated stuff like graphics and sound. Means they don't need as much oomph to get the job done well

I certainly hope so because I've been having a lot of issues accessing this site over the past few weeks.

How do you know your desktop hardware is better? He didn't say what hardware he has, only the cpu freq and memory/disk size.....

Server architecture is pretty quick, you may find it'd smoke your stuff on actual processing power!

Fark! Responce and search time is considerably noticeable! Best upgrade KB ever had I reckon
:niceone:
Search time down to 0.06 seconds. Now that is instant. I'd always found the previous search function pain in the anus.
I wonder how fast the site will be like at 1:35am?

Much faster! :niceone:
Server grade ECC RAM is way more expensive than consumer grade stuff

Sweet as buddy. So does that mean we need another shirt sale/donation to keep you ticking over?

I think Kiwibike Insurance, Motomail, CKTechnical and Motorcycle Doctor are working hard to fulfill that requirement.

99% of user problems are the user.
A server, such as this one, is unencumbered but unnecessary crap like Windows, wallpaper changers, virus scanners, "helper" services, automatic update checkers, IM clients, email clients, web browsers, half a dozen toolbars, a monitor/keyboard/mouse blah blah.
It also fits into a standard 19" rack, has redundant power supplies and a remote console.

I'm using a work laptop that has macafee host based protection and it won't let me to the site as it doesn't like the host domain zyns.com.

FYI .... The domain kiwibiker.zyns.com is blocked 100% as an unsafe site by nod32 (eset)
I'm posting this from my iPad, the only device in my house that doesn't have nod32 installed.
Even my android phone has nod32 installed.

Yep. Lots of security software block dynamic dns. Pain in the arse, but things will be all good tomorrow.
Cheers.

I use Trend and had the same issue. I guess because zyns.com is available to anyone to register an IP address against a lot of people hosting bad stuff use it. Trend list that domain as hosting verified fraudulent activity.

It'd go even quicker if some idiot at the server provider didn't think it's ok to install a 32bit OS on 64bit hardware. :angry2:

Doh. Mind you, we always install 32 bit CentOS instead of the 64 bit version no matter what the hardware is cos not everything we use compiles cleanly on 64 bit.

Don't worry, that 64bit thing will never catch on

well the new "server" appears to have taken response rates from sub second to sub-minute..... Performance over the past few days has been really poor. Very slow at all times of the day including very late at night....anyone else get this ?

There's been a disturbance in the internets recently. As if 1,000,000 sites cried out in anguish and then were slow.
I don't think it' just KB.

Nah... still very slow - average 15-20 second delay between click and response. Tested on 3 different machines at two different locations and several different browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Explorer).

aha - much better now. :)
