View Full Version : KLR 650 running rich?

Hello,

Just picked up a 2006 Kawa KLR 650 over the weekend and the previous owner said he'd had it in for a change of carb diaphragm and he thought the shop that did it set the carb up a bit rich.

I know what 'running rich' mean, but how do I tell if it is, and more importantly how do I adjust it?

Here's a few things I noticed:

Black 'sooty' mark on the bodywork near the exhaust
When I close the throttle at high RPM's it goes 'pop pop pop'
On a constant throttle at low speeds it's hesitating/jerking slightly all the time

It starts on choke easy and runs fine all other times, doesn't blow any smoke and doesn't hesitate on acceleration.

Any ideas? Is this worth tackling with the manual and a few tools or should it go to the mechanics?

Cheers.

I think the only adjustment (ie screw adjustment) is the idle mixture, anything other than that you're into jet swapping.

A clogged air filter (either dirty or over oiled) will cause rich running, as will a too high float level.

Thanks Pete. I'll pull the air filter out tomorrow and see what its like.
