Recently I bought a motorcycle from Trademe, a Suzuki TS 185 ER on Tuesday.

Hmm... well now I'm a bit stuck. I have bought my bike but now I have to get it down to Greytown. Its up in Auckland with the private seller. I plan to get it shipped down but I'm not sure how, CT http://www.captaintransporter.co.nz/quote-request/motorcycle
(the shipping company) states this 'If the vehicle is changing ownership, remember to arrange appropriate documentation.' I'm not sure if that means that I have to have the seller fill out his portion of the paperwork first and show it to the shipping company or not.

I need to fill out MR13B and the seller needs to fill out MR13A, however the NZTA doesn't make it exactly easy to understand the process. http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/registration-licensing/buying-selling.html

The government is good at doing that...

Anyone here that can spell out the process in layman and newbish terms?
Has anyone bought a motorcycle long distance before?
What legally needs to happen?

All you need to do to change ownership to you is to go onto this form online and fill it out:
https://transact.nzta.govt.nz/transactions/NoticeOfAcquisition/entry.aspx

You don't require the seller to do anything. Nudda.

I recently had a bike delivered by biketranz from the South Island up to Whangarei. It was not quick nor cheap but I was very happy with the service, communication & receiving a bike the same as it was before loading so I would definitely recommend them. In fairness, Christchurch to Whangas & the logistics in between is bit of a mission when your trying to make a crust.
The seller posted his part of the sale form & I went to the Post Office with my licence & filled out my bit as new owner for the princely sum of $9.41. Jobs a carrot.

Did the whole thing over the phone coz I'm such a trusting chap.

So all he needs to do is fill out his portion and then he sends it down to me by postage?
Does the seller need to give me a receipt as proof of sale? If so, what should the receipt look like?
I haven't seen the form so I'm not sure whether the seller has to obtain information from me in order to complete the transaction.

I asked for a receipt, amount paid, what I had purchased etc. Not sure where you would stand if somebody was trying to stiff you, though. The seller supplied me with photographs of the bike prior to & loaded with biketranz also. My purchase was exceptionally easy & done in good faith from both ends. The seller went above & beyond with his help which made it all totally painless. :drinknsin to him.

The seller sent his form in to the NZTA, not too me. They are separate forms asking for reg number, frame number, name & contact details. I guess the purpose is to let them know you have disposed of the vehicle & are no longer the registered owner & not liable for whatever happens next...
When I submitted my form into the post office they basically ID'd me & gave me a receipt. Done.
Have a squizz on line, the only details the seller had for me were name & address & I'm not sure if he needed them for his form.

Change of ownership is easy. Making sure the bike is up to scratch & gets delivered safely is the most important thing.

Two separate forms?

Ok then, that makes it much easier. So all I need to do Is pick up a MR13B form and fill that out and then send it in?

I did not look online but the new owner form stipulated that I MUST be ID'd. Maybe a scan of your license would do.

When I bought the WR I changed the ownership online, you have to enter your drivers license number, which must constitute "being ID'd"

Splendid.

I never bothered to ask biketranz but suggest you find out what insurance, indemnity you have etc when it is transported. Just in case...
