View Full Version : Has anyone made an exhaust that makes 2 strokes bearable?

2 strokes are faster than similarly sized 4 strokes but make an unbearable ting ting ting ting. Has anyone ever heard of a muffler or anything that either shuts these beasts up or lowers the tone down a bit?

the sound of a bike is very important. the reason why I would never own a NSR250, hate 2 strokes!

Not sure why people are upset, your comments make absolute sense. I had an RGV250 once and had the same issue. After several attempts we worked out that the noise was basically produced in the expansion chamber so removed it. Tried several replacements with wider diameter pipes but the noise was awful and it ran very poorly. In the end we worked out that car radiator hose (40mm diameter) soaked up all the ring a ding dings.

Might be hard to source here but the front lower hose from a 1970 to 1976 Ford Cortina (Mark 3) has the right curves for fitting to an RGV with very little work. Should work for an RS 250 as well. Depends what bike you end up getting. The hose has more built in expansion than metal pipes so needs no chamber, and jubilee clips are far easier to work with than welding and brazing. Getting the two in to one joint is pretty impossible if you ask me, we ended up running both pipes up under the seat, way before Ducati or anyone else thought of it.

Give it a go and post some photos. I lost all mine in a fire.

....my bro in law did something similar with a vacuum cleaner hose on his old Vauxhall...the flexi bit twisted itself 'perfic' for the bend up to the pipe off the manifold and the ally tube looked just the bee's knees....didn't pass the WOF tho....had me fucked as to why not....

As to the rest of you I appreciate the sound of an engine. Who can look at a bike and hear it sounding like a ball bearing in a tin can rattling right beside your ear and think "sweet"?

I think as everyone has pointed out, you don't. You appreciate the sound of a four stroke engine.

You can't change the fundamental way a two stroke works, which is inextricably linked to both the noise and performance. I'd suggest getting to understand how a two stroke engine works and coming to appreciate the noise or getting a high performance 250 four stroke. Like this one -

Oooh, touched a nerve you have.

Simple, ride one for a while. You will learn that a) braap is good, b) the ring ting ting comes before the braap therefore c) the ring ting ting is also good. And you'll find these noise have become sweet music to your ears, everytime you hear one bringing back memories of said braap.

ALL HAIL THE BRAAAP.

This has been a public service announcement, brought to you by Castrol R, and red powerbands.

The more important question, has anyone made an exhaust for a 4T so it sounds like a 2T? :bleh:

Indeed and I agree , the Open class MX 500 2T's sing a nice song too ....BBRAAAAP ! Or what's left of them....

A nicer tune than the awful sound of the current 4t's , just my opinion of course and, did someone mention they put out a tad more power ?

That was seriously asked? hahaha i rode a 2stroke CR85 and was a great ride with good power for its size.
My Hyosung has a Kawasaki ZX6R muffler and sounds like a good ol' V-Twin, just quieter. I didn't intend to be offensive to 2 stroke lovers just my preference is the deep rumble and roar of a 4 stroke. And I was considering buying an NSR but not sure how the neighbours were going to appreciate that loud 2 stroke warming up at 7am every morning.

If you put a 4 stroke exhaust onto a 2 stroke bike, then it turns the bike into a 3 stroke. You get the best of both worlds, especially after you fit a yellow power band which will give more power than a red or blue power band. If you wind the power band tight enough then it will sound like a 4 stroke.
