Have emailed ANZ - but just wondering if any one here knows if you can carry your full face M/c helmet on as hand luggage?

Thanks guys. I took one out to the Napier airport last year to check and the staff member there said no.

Will await ANZ's response and let you all know.

Cheers. :niceone:

I have also flown no problems a couple of years ago wearing full leathers carrying my helmet.

if you have a helmet bag, its just carry on luggage, no? Id be worried about it getting all scratched up and rooted in the overhead locker

I flew Auckland > Palmerston Nth a couple of years ago with mine and had no issues.
Picked up the bike and rode home.
Good fun actually.

My reply from ANZ:

Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately motorcycle helmets cannot be taken as carry on luggage and would need to be checked in
Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further enquires.
Kind regards,

I've seen guys bringing new ones in boxes back from Oz as carry on. As HDC said, just use your helmet bag. I guess their policy is to stop you smashing people in the face with it. I reckon the official policy and what's enforced must be different :Punk:

I got a foam helmet case from W Whites and carried my helmet to Canada and back with no problems. It fitted into the overhead lockers.

Why would you send an enquiry about aeroplane to a bank? :weird:

you've seen what the monkeys who throw luggage for a living do with people's luggage? No way would I be checking a helmet.

balls to that. We had our helmets in carry-on helmet bags .... not way they where going in the baggage area..... but it was our only carry on luggage for our trip to Oz....

The BIG concern is fronting up to final check, baggage is gone and we're told - sorry no helmets............

And the (probably) BIGGER concern is having them smashed around in our checked in baggage.

Will depend if you have any other carry on luggage, and it can fit into the overhead lockers. And probably whether it is International or not.

I do this as part of my gig.

The only time in 50+ flights that I had to check it in was the one time as a noob I asked at the ticket desk if it was OK.

Just walk on with it and nobody will say anything. International or domestic.

In our case - we will have other carry on luggage and it's International and Domestic.

Squeeze it into your helmet bag then.

Even last trip to WLG to AKL, AKL to Whangarei .... no problem.... was even in just a cloth draw string bag... but was my only carry on.

Can't see that changing in the last 2 years...

BTW its not listed on the 'not allowed in yer luggage' list...

Doesn't matter.

I carried a backpack, a manbag (for cameras), my leather jacket and helmet on - Perth to Brisbane yesterday. Nobody said anything.
Done the same trans-tasman many times.

I have always carried it on rather than check in.

For bonus points, put in on before landing and see what happens??!!!! They cannot ask you to remove it - if they do, say that you have previously sustained a head injury.

Actually, I may try this next time myself..

I tell them - 'The last flight was really rough!'

" Sorry sir you cant take that helmet on board"

"Oh yea? How long does it take a plane to fall 30,000ft? 3 minutes?? I can put my skid lid on in half that time. Thank you, now get outta my way. "

How long would it take for a plane to fall 30,000?

Tell them you have a fear of flying and that it's for safety in case the pilot bins the plane.

Did they have planes when you were a noob?

I have heard of them saying no, but it was quickly fixed with a rational argument.

It is a piece of potentially life saving safety equipment that relies on being in perfect condition to do its job. You cant risk having it thrown around by baggage ha^^^DESTROY^^^ers.

Fucker friendships or summat.

I used to have to push start the old tiger moth before I could go flying.

Carried boxed helmets on board a few times now. Got stopped in Akl after flying back from Nagoya in Japan with a set of rearsets as carry on. No problem with the international flight (they opened the box and inspected them) but apparently I wasn't going to be allowed to board a domestic flight with them. I asked them why I would fly 11hrs with them in my possession only to board a 1hr domestic flight and use them to hijack that flight. That was met with a reply of 'we are not concerned with their safety regulations, just ours'. It was starting to look bad (as by now I was considering using them as a weapon) until another customs guy overheard our discussion, asked what sort of bike I rode, told me he rode a Blackbird, and told the useless black bird who was stopping me from boarding to let me by. Which she did. I still have the plane too.

I've taken helmets domestically and internationally without issue. Usually just in the helmet bag slung over my shoulder like a normal bag.

In the last two days I've carried my helmet on Air NZ flights from CHC to AKL, AKL to SYD, and then from SYD to CHC. No comment was made by check-in staff at CHC or AKL, and they both saw my helmet, but at SYD I was issued an official "approved cabin luggage" sticker. It's not an issue.

Couple of issues really:

Cost cutting both in services, and in outsourcing maintenance overseas while shutting down or scaling down on our maintenance facilities. (job losses)

More obvious one, price of travel WILL go up.

And all this because the new investors will want a good return for their dollars spent.

Do tell - KR Gig?

Hi Dave, Yes, 2012 Yamaha R1 launch at The Farm (private road course a couple of hours drive north of Sydney). The big news is the inclusion of the six stage (plus "off") Traction Control. We were lucky enough to spend the day in the rain, proving the TCS is both effective and oh so smooth in operation. All will be revealed in KR in due course.

Cheers,
Dave B

Update: In spite of the response I received from Greg (Air New Zealand Online Support ) we have just returned from Melbourne after flying Napier/Melbourne/Napier with our helmets in their helmet bags as carry on cabin luggage with no worries whatsoever? <_<

That's cool, I'm pleased. Last couple of trips from Phillip Island, at Melbourne they had metal frame go/no go tool. If your bag fitted in the frame you were OK, if it didn't - tough. A helmet wouldn't fit but then it is a special case. You'd just have to hope the staff were a bit flexible.

We were not subjected to the frame test. :sweatdrop
