The last few years have been good to bacon. Some time around 2005 or so it made the leap from guilty breakfast pleasure to restaurant staple, and soon after you could hardly find a soup or noodle plate or vegetable dish that wasn’t studded with cured, smoked pork. Bacon salt, a kosher, vegetarian seasoning product, followed, then Baconnaise, bacon popcorn, bacon chocolate bars, bacon-topped pies, bacon-flavoured lip balm, and even bacon marmalade, which President’s Choice has started hawking of late.

And yet all of those seem so quaint all of the sudden, now that a Seattle-based food company has launched Baconlube. That’s right. Bacon-flavoured personal lubricant. The jokes pretty much write themselves.

“Should everything taste like bacon?” the company, called J&D’s Foods, asked in a press release. “Yes. Literally everything,” was its response. “No more horrifying bedroom experiments with bacon grease.”

Taste-associations being as powerful as they are, of course, there’s a good chance that this development will benefit the personal-lubricant industry far more than bacon producers. And it’s still too early to say whether the product will ever catch on with the food elite.

Helen Redpath, the food manager at Vancouver’s Gourmet Warehouse, said her shop carries most of J&D’s products and they’re popular with customers. “They actually taste like bacon, and without any funny aftertaste,” she said.

She hadn’t yet heard of company’s latest, however.

“Oh my God,” she said when told about the product. “Okay, that grosses me out a little bit – I’m a little old for that.”

But would her store stock it? “No,” she answered. “No, no, no – that’s, ah. No!”

I thought I had come up with an invention today. Was reading the label on the back of some rice bran oil this morning only to find it was halal. What with the increasing popularity of that somewhat stone age religion I wondered if there was any way I could tap in to the market. Checked my NZ Oxford dictionary to find that halal is not even in there, is it just a fad I ask myself? But who cares, with 50 gazillion of them there must be opportunities, then it came to me. Halal streaky bacon!

Bacon is quite clearly the food of the gods so it sounds kosher, if you'll pardon the pun. Anyway, about to post about it on here to get some funds to get in front of Dragons Den when I did a Google search and fuck me, someone has already done it. Don't ask at KFC though -

The tragedy is that this is not halal. They kill this way in the name of making money.

My understanding from a former work colleague who was a Muslim cleric is that real halal slaughter is always outdoors and north facing, involves a cleric befriending the animal. The cleric is responsible for ensuring the animal does not experience fear in their final moments. There is nothing about pain. The cleric must comfort the animal until they have passed.
My friend was not willing to do the ritual slaughters, so he does not red meat unless it had been provided by someone else. This is eaten because it is very rude to refuse.
White meat does not attract the rituals.

He used to buy from the halal shops until he visited a factory for an opening. The rituals here are more complete than in that video, but still are not genuine. Also the meat is raised by non Muslims and often trucked by non Muslims. Making the meat dirty.
He said many buy that way just to be seen to respect their religion. Not because it is what they believe.

Orthodox Muslims in this country that want real halal all eat home kill.

He also said to an orthodox Muslim knowing a non Muslim has eaten some of the same animal makes it dirty. By Muslim law if a butcher sold the meat to a non Muslim he must throw out all of the rest of his meat. They don't do that either.

That's not only fucken horrific but extremely cruel. Quite frankly it looks like something from a horror movie but with animals instead of people. Worse it's real.
