View Full Version : Windshield experiences?

I'm considering a windshield for my GV250. Not sure if it's my helmet or not, but despite having a full faced helmet, I still get a bit of wind seeping at my face. The helmet noise is okay however.
Before I go spending $200 for a windscreen, I was wondering what peoples experiences are with them .
Do they reduce face wind and helmet noise? Do they slow the bike down quite a bit? And are the universal windshields or the stock windshields better?

It would depend on how you ride your bike? You may just end up directing more wind in to your helmet.

There's no such thing as a perfect screen. You'll inevitably get chop, buffet and increased helmet noise riding behind one. You'll need to weigh that up against any benefit you get from weather protection. Screens that attach directly to the bike's forks can be an issue in cross-winds, particularly at low bike speed and high wind speed.

Considering you have effectively paid thousands of $$$ to sit in a draft ... what did you expect ... ???
If you dont like the draft ... buy a car.
Forget the screen ... spend the $$$ on GAS instead ... and get the experience/time on the road.

Back in the day (1982?) I fitted a screen which also had a white plastic bottom that went over the headlight and out towards the hands. Best thing about it was that it must have looked like a cop bike front on as other road users' behaviour toward me improved considerably after I installed it.

I have found a windshield invaluable in the winter. Riding to work late at night, and returning in the fog or frost, the shield allows me to lift the helmet visor up and see out under it but over the windshield. With clear safety specs on, I get a good clear view ahead without the wind blast / rain hitting my face.
On the other hand, I get a lot of turbulance as the air swirls in behind the shield. I get more engine / transmission noise rising up and sitting in the vacuum behind the shield.
My $700 helmet is almost unbearable to wear with a windshield. The air seems to hit in waves around the top of the visor. Take the windshield off and the reduction in wind roar is amazing.
I ride a crusier ( sit up position) and the shield does stop the rain from driving into the jacket front. It also breaks the wind hitting me full on which makes cruising easier. Did 550 k's last Thursday, and no strain on my shoulders or arms at all.
Oh and my visor doesn't get half the bugs on it.
I find the bike seems much smaller without the shield and this makes it easier to pick my line coming up to corners.
Over the summer, I will take it off.

Just had a shield fitted to my grasstracker and it makes a huge difference.
Did nearly 2000 kms over the weekend and noticed that i didn't find it tiring because i wasn't having to hang on.
Haven't found it any noisier
Doesn't seem to slow the bike down either
Wouldn't be without it now

I have had screens on my last 4 bikes and I would not be without one as well.

hehe how true! I suppose they come with stock windscreens .
Thanks for the replies. I'm still fairly uncertain whether to invest in one on my cruiser . But the wellington winds and chills are taking a dip now for the summer . I might just leave it until next winter .

252167 I find these very good, they look smart and work very well (minimal buffeting) but surprisingly effective at keeping the weather/wind off. slightly adjustable and trimmable? to size if you're careful.
Here if you're interested, about $100 + Postage. http://www.mandp.co.uk/products/list/Bodywork/Screens-Unfaired-Motorcycles

Going from a faired sportsbike, to a non faired sports bike (same bike). I feel more in the wind (obviously) but less buffeting and helmet/road/engine noise.
The really weird thing is without a screen to look at I feel like I'm falling over the front of the bike. I've got a flyscreen and riser bars on order so hopefully that will help. I'll fit them in seperate stages to see how each one affects it.

I bought one of these for my Harley Sportster....http://www.memphisshades.com/harley-shades/sportshields-family/del-rio with the quick remove hardware. It's really good and removes any wind pressure. I can easily do 500-600km rides and the wife and I have toured all over with it. Most people reckon they hardly notice it.
A high quality product bought at J&P cycles in the States for hundreds less than Harley ones from the dealer.
Highly recommended
Cheers
