Audio level problem with windows 7

So I have this bastard problem with my audio, every so often it maxes out the internal gain somewhere and all I get is loud static through the speakers, I used to be able to fix it by just turning down the master volume, but the gain is too damn high for that now. Also tried turning it off and on again, re-installing drivers from multiple sources, and searching the internets. Motherboard is an Asus M2N-SLI, only the third problem ever with asus components, and the other two are audio related as well.
If its a hardware problem I could just go get a PCI sound card, but I'm not sure it is yet....

Can't help you with this one, but I do believe audio problems is not a unique problem with win7, cause of the flashy stuff win7 can do with audio there's more points to fail

I've had queer problems before with poor connections resulting in static, especially through decent headphones.

you've plugged your speakers into the microphone port havencha... could be a dodgy connection on the board or the port itself may be shafted... bit like my daughters Barbie laptop, you can only put the male end into the port so far, any further and you lose the audio entirely.

nah, interference or bad connections is usually low level, this is fucking loud, and just cut in abrubtly yesterday. I'm thinking something has gone wrong with the gain on the mobo audio chip. Will try and source a cheap sound card.

Try that. Or try downloading the newest AC97 and Intel drivers.
There are buggy versions of these drivers on some CD's around the place.

Out of intrest it might be worth setting up a dual boot with Ubuntu/Mint so that if you ever have a problem again you can confirm whether its software or hardware easier.

12$ card of TM will hopefully do the trick, hope it gets here soon, new SOA out 2moro, and be no good without sound <_<

sounds to me like a dry joint somewhere - if its not on the mainboard it will be in the route to, or in the speakers.

Try a different set of speakers before you do anything else..
then a different speaker cable (unlikely to be this).

Its relatively common for onboard components to fail.. I regularly find people with onboard video/sound/ethernet that fails.. although its more often than not the video...
